“Location Perfection/Delights of the Buddha Bar”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2009

My family and I stayed here over the Christmas and New Year period. I had stayed on Long Beach before but not at this resort, which was ungoing renovation when we where here in in early 08.

When we arrived at Tonsai Wharf after the ferry ride from Phuket we were greeted by friendly staff from the resort who helped us with our luggage and showed us to the longtail boat that would be taking us to Long Beach. As we approached by boat, the view of the little bungalows on the hillside of Long beach was quite lovely and I was really excited to arrive.

By the time we got to the reception area we were hot and ready to get to our bungalows to cool off and relax after our journey. Unfortunataly, the women on reception made our arrival as stressful as possible. They managed to bungle our checking in process completely, confusing the situation and just generally making things unecessarily stressful. During the course of the trip, each encounter with the front desk mirrored this experience. They didnt have a clue what they were doing and didnt seem particuarly interested in offering help. Their English language skills were also not up to scratch and it was very hard to understand them or to explain yourself to them. You need the front desk staff of a resort catering for tourists to speak basic English and this was certainly not the case here.

When we eventually got to our rooms we were happy, we had lovely views on Phi Phi Leh (where The Beach was filmed) and Long Beach and the bungalow was comfortable, with icey cool aircon.

The resort itself was very nice, Long Beach is the best location on Phi Phi and the snorkeling is amazing. The food at the resort was fine, but by far the best part of the resort is the Buddha Bar run by the wonderful Saki! Saki also arranges day trips by Long Tail boat to all of the interesting places around the island, like Monkey beach, Maya Bay and over to the beautiful Bamboo Island. Each night after dinner we would chill on the sand infront of the Buddha Bar with a cocktail or Chang and watch the fire spinning show. All of the great bar staff at the Buddha Bar fire spin and it was really entertaining to watch. Saki was a wonderful host and went out of his way to ensure that everyone was having a great time. He is an absolute star!

On the first day at the resort, we sat on the beach directly infront of the resort on deck chairs and under umbrellas. Everything was peaceful and serene - until around midday. One by one, large speed boats would arrive from Phuket and boat-loads of tourists would get out and make their way to the outdoor eating area of the resort. It was really unpleasant to have hundreds of day trippers taking over the resort and by 1pm we counted 15 noisy speed boats lined up at the front! Clearly the resort was trying to make extra cash catering lunch to these day trippers from Phuket, but at what cost to their actual guests? After that day we instead sat under the lovely trees down by the Paradise Resort to swim in peace and quite until the late afternoon when the hoards of day trippers left our resort.

This was dissapointing but apart from that the resort is a great place to stay in an ideal location. The deluxe bungalows are really quite lovely and the views are superb. Saki and the Buddha Bar staff really make the resort! They are the heart and soul of the whole operation. I cant wait to get back there, have a Buddha Bar cocktail and watch fire spinning under the stars once again!

We stayed at this resort after reading a good Lonely Planet review and the pictures of the rooms/ resort looked great. But beware - you are paying for the location only (it's a great beach) and not the accommodation itself.

The rooms are very basic - looked unclean, the TV was fuzzy, the bathroom was ancient and the toilet had flushing problems. They have internet access, but you have to pay for it! (unlike other hotels which provide free access). The pool was awful - and it was closed for 'chemical treatment' whilst we were there. Breakfast was average. If you're prepared for pretty basic accommodation, then you'll be fine here. We thought it was very overpriced. I would explore other options if you wanted to stay at this lovely beach.

This place lacks personality..it needs a decent front office manager..we had a one of the best rooms high up which was lovely but it had no furniture in it!!! One small table for one suitcase, no shelves or wardrobe!! we had to put all our clothes on the floor!!! only one bedside table! The man handling breakfast was pleasant enough. We had a 9.00am ferry to go to Krabi and the hotel boat was meant to leave at 8.30am. No sign of boat so we had to struggle with our own baggage to dock and pay for our own boat to the ferry..we were not happy. I think you can do better on Phi Phi. Once they get a good manager the place could be worth while...we ate dinner twice at the beach restaurant just next door on the beach which was fun.
