“Great location, large resort, attentive staff ”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2014

We were very satisfied with our 5 night stay. It's a large resort but we did not feel intruded and overall we thought the location is superb. We were particularly satisfied with the resort excursion team (professional and attentive) and the front desk team (even organized a surprise birthday cake). And honestly not so bothered by other factors such as noise of the boats - the only way to and from the hotel! It's true that nothing is particularly cheap but if you want some low cost stay in Tonsai bay... so I think overall we got ok value.

This is a beautiful holiday resort in the middle of nowhere so bear that in mind. Excellent spa staff by the way.

People accustomed to 5 star or expecting 5 star should abstain

First we booked the resort for 2nights thru booking.com, and as the island is small we didn't really looked where the resort is located - hotel is literally on the other side of the island far away from main port and noise (this is good thing), but it costs 1000 bath to get by long tail from port to resort and takes another 30min (more or less). The another good thing was the view and resort all together - it is like paradise. Very pretty. So after couple of hours staying here we decided to extend our stay by one more night - reception couldn't offer us booking.com rate so we booked it thru that website again. Fine, no problem until the reception next day was keep on informing us that we are expected to pay our outstanding bill before our departure. We spoke with receptionist - of course as we thought at least reception staff will speak good English - forget it! So we try to explain receptionist that we booked another night and we would like to stay in the same room- yes yes ok but she doesn't understand:/ So frustrating. In the evening somebody knocked on our door that we need to contact reception ASAP- so we did it - it was again regarding our departure. So we needed to explain again and again...
This is not the end. We asked for laundry to be taken, and we prepared all the same day we arrived so it can be collected next day till 12, as after 12 guest need to pay extra. I called reception to let them know the laundry is ready for next day and the girl couldn't understand and put me thru another girl how seemed to get the message, but next day laundry wasn't picked up till 13 and it happened only after we went to reception to tell them that.
Another day we went to pool bar and on the list 80% stuff was made out of coconut - we ordered coconut cocktails and the bartender said that they don't have coconut - what?!?! When everywhere in Thailand you will get coconut, loads of coconuts, in this big resort that welcomes enormous amount of international people they don't speak English enough to understand simple things and don't have coconut!
Few more things:
1. Contacting hotel by phone was impossible after we arrived to the main port- the phone number on the web page was either busy all the time or somebody else picked up saying wrong number
2. Check in took them longer than 30 min, good thing was only the cocktail that they gave us while waiting
3. When we asked for simple things like where is this or that place nobody knew anything, or just didn't want to tell us :/.

I do understand that some people could have good experience and some people are less demanding than us, but certain things are crucial to be a part of successful hotel industry. I used to work in four star hotel in Ireland and just some standards are not applicable in this spa and resort.

Except of the view and room, I wouldn't recommend to stay at this place if somebody expects good service standard.

Good tip: if you want good food, massage or cloths/ aloe vera cream/ etc. go outside the resort to small village -literally next door and you will get all of this for good money.

We spent five days at this resort and really enjoyed our stay. The room was lovely and the pool with swim up bar great. The beach isn't the best though because the tides are extreme and it's not possible to really sit on the beach and use it much. Also, we found the service hit and miss. Most staff members were very polite and helpful, but some moody and almost rude at times, which I find unacceptable. There are a number of restaurants and bars at the resort. We used all bars and had dinner at two of the restaurants. Whilst the food was good, the atmosphere was lacking. This is mainly because most residents prefer to eat at local restaurants outside the resort, which we did most nights as well - better atmosphere and good food at a significantly lower price compared to the resort! One other negative was the live music that was played at the restaurants and bar in the evening. We did not rate this at all and it did not help the general atmosphere! All in all a good resort with some improvements to be made, in our opinion.

While this resort was a very beautiful one, the experience overall was somewhat underwhelming. Our family holiday got off to a poor start when both myself and my brother, staying in a bungalow with two twin beds, woke up after our first night with dozens upon dozens of bug bites on our feet and legs. We had arrived mid-afternoon, gone to dinner at a restaurant at the resort, and went to sleep free of bug bites. We had not been to the beach, nor had we swam in the ocean. These were bed bug bites. We notified the hotel staff of the issue and were promptly moved to a different bungalow where there were no further problems. Management insisted that bed bugs were not a possibility as they deep clean the rooms regularly. The following day, we observed that new guests had been checked into our original bungalow, and the day after that, we noticed that the mattresses had been removed from the room and were sitting out on the bungalow's porch. I recognize that bed bugs are a virtual inevitability in establishments such as hotels where various individuals and their belongings are frequently coming and going. That being said, I was disappointed when our initial notification was dismissed as an impossibility, and even more disappointed to know that others might have been unnecessarily subjected to the same itchy, irritating, and inconvenient experience less than 24 hours later. Simply something to be mindful of when making decisions regarding accommodations.

Dear Christina C

Thank you for staying with us and sharing your experience. We apologise for the experience that met in our bungalow. Your value mention had been taken note by management and proper action had been solve. We would like to inform that apart from daily cleaning our resort had every 3 months done the proper cleaning by GreenMite service for the bed, pillow, sofa and cushion. Thank you again for your value review.

I stayed at the Outrigger a few weeks ago (December 2013) and LOVED it.

Yes it’s hard to get too. Koh Phi Phi is a two hour ferry ride from Krabi which is shared with a real assortment of tourists, but what a scenic two hours! Then on arrival, Outrigger staff found us promptly and popped us on a traditional Thai long boat (just the two of us) and that took another twenty minutes, but trust me – it’s worth the wait.

Outrigger has a beautiful, private, white, sandy beach which you land on and get greeted by more staff and cocktails as you fill in your arrival paperwork. We were a bit upset as we had booked through Booking.com which said that the gala dinner for Christmas WAS included, but the hotel said the gala dinner was NOT included, with no budging room. I think that got us a room upgrade on the last day of our stay however to an Ocean Front Deluxe Villa (or something), which was FABULOUS.

The bell boys were charming and showed us carefully around our rooms. The first hut was lovely, clean and comfy with thoughtful amenities like an iPod charger and bottled water complimentary. The second room was a dream, with an amazing spa bath, huge shower, huge bed, amazing view – we were in heaven.

We spend a lot of time by the pool which in turn overlooks the beach, and wow it just oozed luxury. We drank coconuts all day long and never wanted to move. The pool is extensive, and there are enough sun loungers around. We loved the pool bar, I’m a sucker for seats in pools even if it does mean you get plastic glasses :-)

One thing that really changed out holiday at the Outrigger was the discovery of the village behind the hotel. The way is not paved, or lighted well, and I am not sure the hotel likes to lose customers to the village.. but it certainly made our stay. Definitely go for dinner, massage, clothes, water sports and evening drinks. There is a traditional Thai massage place there next to the Pad Thai restaurant which was just amazing (best massage ever for 400Baht!) and we enjoyed dining in the village and booking diving also (go with Phi Phi Dive Club’s Andy, he is the best for first timers, really knows his stuff and is super qualified)

Do I want to go back? Definitely. And I want to take everyone with me!

Room Tip: If you can afford it, our upgrade to an Ocean Front Villa really was top notch compared to our origi...

Beautiful grounds, beautiful views and adequate service. The bungalows are nice....not the nicest I've stayed in during my entire existence, but the nicest I've experienced in Southeast Asia. This is a large, well-manicured, high service resort, so expect to have your wallet sucked at the resort bars and restaurants (standard for all places like this). Alternatively, you can hit up the nearby village for better deals (our preference).

This is far from the main area- Tonsai Bay. That's a good thing as Tonsai Bay is crowded and gross.

The pool area is really fantastic and the beach, while small during high tide, boasts fantastic views. I don't need much sand to enjoy this scenery, and my beach volleyball career never really took off anyway.

Book a long tail boat directly to take you around the islands (as opposed to the highly structured and overpriced motorboat outings provided by the hotel). Eat dinner at "Pad Thai" in the village behind the rec center...it's much tastier and better priced than the resort restaurants.

My only real complaints are small, but there are two things they could have done to earn the final star from
me:

1.) Provide wifi in the guest rooms
2.) Not charge extra for the long tail boat from the ferry landing. They are in a remote location, so there is no other choice but to take this boat. Given the price of this resort, it should be included.

Just spent 1 night at Outrigger. Room was spacious but do not expect anything luxurious. Very nice swimming pool facing the sea but I struggled to find the place where I could find a towel.

They offer free internet access in the lobby but there is no wi fi in the villas.

Food is nice. They offer a huge variety of food in their buffet.

In general, staff was kind to us, although they do not speak (or understand) english very well. Try to avoid arriving at the hotel in the morning, as check in is only after 2:00. You will have to wait at the lobby.

But the most important thing is: Outrigger is a super beautiful hotel located in an amazing area of Phi Phi. The beauty and the peace that the beach brings to you compensate the little flaws of the services.

If I have the chance, I will come back again.
