“Gorgeous Beach”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2013

Spent a wonderfully relaxing 3 days at Outrigger Resort. The beach at this resort is straight out of a magazine. Beautiful white sand and turquoise water. Smiling and very helpful staff, especially the reception staff and the buggy drivers. A special mention to Miss Joom who did all to ensure the stay was perfect. Breakfast was a buffet with a great eggs to order station. As expected meals are on the expensive side so we ventured out of the hotel grounds and a five minute walk later were at a village that had a few eateries and mini marts. A reccomendation from hotel staff at Outrigger suggested we dine at Pad Thai where the food was cooked in a make shift kitchen at the front of this quite basic restaraunt. The food we had was fresh and tasty. Highly reccomend the Pad Thai with chicken, The tempura prawns looked amazing as did the fried rice served in a pinapple.Prices were so cheap. Disappointed that we only dined here once as they closed for two nights during easter.Had meals at two other places that were fine but not as good as those I saw at Pad Thai. We had a trip out to Maya Bay in a longboat with "Jep" who was one of the local people who also ran a bar/eatery in the little village. My sister and I had a wonderful morning out with his crewman who took us to a couple of snorkelling spots and also to Maya Bay. Although getting in and out of ther boat was a little challengng the two crewnman that accompanied us on the trip were so very helpfull by assisting us getting in and out of the boat. We met Jep on the beach out front of the resort at 7:30 am and got back around 1:00pm. We missed the crowds by going out early. We paid 1500 THB each. Well worth it. His knowledge of the area was exceptional . We even got to see the little monkeys that live on one of the islands and saw some Black tipped sharks in both the snorkelling spots he took us to. The variety of coloured fish was awesome. A very basic lunch of chicken fried rice and fruit was provided with cold water and soft drinks during the course of the day. We stayed at Phi Phi island especially so we could do this snorkelling trip and we werent disappointed.

Room Tip: If you can afford the rooms closer to the beach do so as we were way up the back in rooms numbered 8...

We had been to this hotel several times before, but i was not told when booking that the management of the hotel had changed. We was a bit dissopointed at first, they did however offer us a upgrade, but when we was taken to the room we decided that we did not want the upgrade due to a number of reasons. It was right at the back in the new area where they had just finished the redevelopment, and it looked like the grass, flowers and trees had just been added. Give it a few years and it will look lovely. We did however, enjoy our stay in this hotel for 7 nights and we will return in a few years and hopefully they will not keep redeveloping the area.

Room Tip: make sure your room is near the beach and not at the back of the resort

My husband and I just returned from a two week trip to Thailand and Vietnam and the Outrigger experience was definitely a highlight! We were on the Phi Phi islands for 6 nights...3 at the Holiday Inn next door and 3 at Outrigger. I had stayed at the Holiday Inn previously with girlfriends and wanted to go back but felt I should also experience another property. Outrigger is next to the HI but has an entirely different feeling. We took a longtail over and were immediately greeted with a welcome drink and our luggage taken care of. We were shown to our ocean front bungalow which was gorgeous. You are not as close to the water as the HI but the rooms are far superior. There is a spacious deck with chairs as well as a covered one with a table for dining. Large bathroom with jacuzzi tub and separate shower overlooking the ocean.
We stayed in room 115 which was on the end with great views of the pool as well....at first I thought it might be noisy but it wasn't at all and we loved not having another bungalow on that side.
I had read reviews of the staff not being friendly but for the most part we did not experience this. The only time where I felt that the staff could have smiled more was in the Recreation Center when I inquired about their shuttle to Tonsai Bay and their excursions. They made me feel like they were doing me a favor by explaining about both. I also inquired about a yoga class they had listed on their board but when I showed up an hour later was told the teacher had cancelled.
With that said it was really the only negative I can say....we ate dinner one night at their restaurant up on the hill that is modeled after a traditional Thai house, food and service were exemplary! The other nights we ate in the village behind the property at Pad Thai which was fantastic. They cook all the food at the front of the restaurant so you can pretty much watch everything being made. Staff was extremely friendly, played great music and as I mentioned, served delicious food! We did have drinks at the Outrigger and while pricey you are paying for the beautiful view and surroundings so we certainly thought it was worth it. We would have eaten more meals on the property but just did not like the feeling in their other restaurants. They were half full, the staff seemed bored and the menus were not interesting. I really hope Outrigger is able to improve this otherwise their guests are going to continue to go back to the village where there are many options with great food (although of course you will not have the beautiful views).
We did not go to the spa but had massages by the water which were wonderful...they are twice the price you will pay in the village but again you won't have the ocean breezes and sounds of the water lapping at the shore just a few feet away.
Speaking of the water...wow was it amazing! Because the property is sheltered on either side the water is so calm and during low tide you can literally walk out the length of two football fields and be thigh high. There were some patches of coral that you needed to walk around but for the most part it was just beautiful white sand that felt like sugar.
We booked our excursion in the village and were happy with the trip...went to Maya Bay, snorkeling in two locations, Monkey Beach and then Tonsai Bay. Half the price of what the resort charged and we were able to have a private longtail and pick when we wanted to leave. I had booked a cooking class in Tonsai Bay so for about 800 bht the longtail captain waited the three hours for us there. I don't know if we could have negotiated a better rate when we left at 5:00 pm to to back to the property but we didn't feel it was excessive.
We used their private shuttle to head back to Phuket for our flight to Vietnam which was fine. I thought that we would be on the spacious catamaran they reference on their site but instead we were on a small speed boat with 15 other people. It only took an hour but was a little boring as you could just sit in your seat and look out the little window. You are dropped off at a different marina from where you would get the ferry and it was a short 15 minute drive to the airport.
Overall we really enjoyed our stay at the Outrigger and would definitely consider coming back on our next trip to Thailand!

Room Tip: Room 115 is by the pool

We are: Couple (M 31, F 26) from London UK. Stayed in Thailand for 2 weeks (Feb 2013) - 2 nights Bangkok, 3 nights Phi Phi and the rest in Koh Samui.

We stayed in the Outrigger for 3 nights as part of an overall 2 week trip to Thailand. Our only regret was that we didn't stay in Phi Phi for longer - whilst there's not much to do, 3 nights wasn't long enough!

As per other reviews, there is a small village just behind the hotel, with bars/restaurants, which we loved as it had the combination of it being a "tourist" location (i.e. the hotel itself) and then the "real" Thailand (to an extent obviously) in the village. We ate in the village every night (and drank as well)!

Hotel is quite pricey for drinks etc - especially if you're just after a bottle of water - again the village is a fraction of the price. Granted, the argument is that if you're spending the money on this style of hotel do you really want to go the village? True, but I'd rather get a litre of water for 20p from the village, as opposed to almost £5 GBP in the hotel!

The hotel is fantastic. We booked the standard room, but got a free upgrade upon arrival - think it was just by pure luck - we certainly didn't ask! The place is spotless, clean and friendly staff.

As with all of Thailand, mosquitoes are a pain - i don't usually get bitten, but my feet and lower legs got a good biting!

Excursions - we did just the 1 due to the length of time there - which was to visit Phi Phi Ley - where they filmed The Beach, which was just insanely busy. Snorkelling was the best here and we booked this through a guy in the village, who was cheaper, trip was longer and more personalised - was just the 2 of us, the guide and the long tail-boat captain. Cost £70 total for both of us for 7 hours, including lunch and soft drinks.

Beautiful stay- lovely rooms, clear water, clean beach, good pool - everything you could want. Even went to complimentary yoga class. Only disadvantage is the time and cost involved in getting there. Would definitely return. We ate at Pad Thai in the village - v nice!

This is my partner and my 3rd time to Thailand, we absolutely love Thailand, the people, the culture, the beautiful views, relaxing beaches, yummy food and cheap cocktails!

Outrigger was the most amazing resort my partner and I have ever stayed at! Everything was perfect from the staff, to the food, pool, rooms and view's. We got offered to upgrade to a front bungalow which we highly recommend, it was totally worth every penny. ($100 extra per night – so still affordable anyway!)

If you are staying at the outrigger be sure to check out the local bars and restaurants that are located behind the resort. Specifically Knock Out Bar, where a fabulous local Chet and his family are very welcoming hosts and cook the best authentic Thai food! Amazing!!

We also went on a private (min 2 people max 4 people) long boat snorkelling tour with Chet. Which was incredible – we had done Phi Phi Island trips by speedboat before but found they were very crowded and made you feel like just a number. Chet showed us the islands from a more local perspective and when we went snorkelling we were the only tourists at his incredible favourite snorkelling spot (the only snorkelling spot we had ever seen bright coral in Thailand!)

If you are going to Thailand firstly you must must stay at the Outrigger on Phi Phi and catch up with the friendly locals where you will learn a lot more about Thailand and how to get the most out of your holiday then any book or website can tell you!

Room Tip: Beach front all the way!

This resort is absolutely magnificent with very a fantastic beach, good swimming pool and good restaurants.

We treated as special guests already in the airport where the transportation was ready as ordered, through the ferry point where we were taken to private speed boat to the Outrigger resort to the reception with cold face towels and drinks.

As previous reviews state the staff is very polite and service minded and they all treat you as a very special guest. The food is great and even fantastic at the resorts Ruan Thai Restaurant.

If you are tired of the food at the resort I can recommend going to the restaurants run by the locals and located behind the resort. The food is good and to a fraction of the price at the resort.

All in all a fantastic resort if you are looking for a great vacation at a secluded location.
