“Charming (and a bit eccentric!) lady and great location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2012

We had a decent stay at Banthai Guest House. We were searching for places in the village, and decided to stop in here. They let us take a look at the room before we paid for it.

It was a little pricey, but many places were full, so we opted to stay for a couple of nights. (That couple of nights ended up turning into 5 nights.) Plus, the prices in Phi Phi seem to be a little inflated anyways.

Miss Lee, the owner, is charming in a crazy sort of way. She took the time to ask and learn our names, and when we came down the next morning, greeted us with a named hello. She was super eager to please us, always bringing the fan over when we used the computers in the morning. She does like to try and sell you tours and bookings though, but it wasn't in a terribly annoying or forceful way. "Why you not book with me huuuuhhhh?" All in good humor.

The room and lobby were clean, and I even witnessed some of the girls cleaning the rooms. They seemed to be doing a thorough job. They offered to clean our rooms every day - some days we wanted it, and others we didn't, simply declining when they offered. On the days that they did clean the rooms, I arranged things in a very specific order so that I would know if my possessions had been touched/rummaged through. I was pleased to find that my stuff hadn't been disturbed. It made me feel more comfortable staying there.

The street party noise was muted from our room, which made sleeping wonderful, and the mattresses are soft with mostly clean looking sheets. Our only issue (and when I say issue, it barely even bothered us) was that the hot water was sometimes a little bit sporadic. and the AC (if left on before auto shutting off when leaving the room) would take awhile to turn back on once we returned. It was however, difficult to find a happy medium with the AC. I would get up a couple times during the night to switch the AC on and then off because it would get too hot/cold very quickly.

I had read many reviews about travelers not getting their deposit back at this place. We never experienced this problem... in fact it was the easiest check-out ever! We came down in the morning and plopped down at the computers, with the key on the desk in front of us. Miss Lee was on the phone at the time, and skipped over, handed us our 1000B deposit and swiped the key back.

Overall, we had a great stay at Banthai Guesthouse. We would stay there again if we ever returned.

I checked out this place, and when i arrived the receptionist asked me if i was Israeli, and i said yes. She said they don't allow Israelis because they "had problems with them".

Please ban this place! Such a disgrace!!!

we stayed here for two nights and moved because there are cheaper places.

the room itself is quite nice and its near everything as well, just enough ti be away from the noise, but if your going to phi phi you have to expect noise as its all about the parties at night on the beach

the room had air con and a fridge in reception where you could get cheap bottles of water.

laundry service was good as well

The guest house is in a great, central location. Our room had more than enough space but were two single beds put together (asked for a double), and it almost reminded me of camping beds. It wasn't immaculately clean but alright. Fans are slow but like most places in Thailand- if you're not in aircon you get what you pay for! The doors are locked at night so worth remembering! As for Ms Lee herself- we found her to be pleasant. She remembered our names and asked us what we had been up to every day. She is a businesswoman so with a few difficult "lads" she was very abrupt and rude to them- not sure that she was out of order for it though. We had a nice stay, wasn't fanastic but wasn't awful either.

Miss lee is the most horriblest Thai women I've ever meet. You get no toilet roll or towers. Rooms are boiling! She is also know for being rude and abusive. She takes your deposit we then got police involved so she caimed we'd actually never stayed there and hid all the evidence. We left straight away as she kept walking in our room without knocking and waking us up shouting. don't ever stay here the police have also said they get loads of problems with her.

I won't say that this guest house is horrible or dirty... but for sure there are other options in Ko Phi Phi. Ms Lee is certainly not a bad person, but a little weird. The room we had was awful, small, very hot despite of the fan, with a tiny window and no sheets, no towels, a broken mirror, dust and hair in the "bathroom".
The best point is the central location, and a friendly atmosphere with the other guests. And be aware that the doors are closed at night, and opens only around 08H00 am. Don't even imagine to leave before, except if you want to lose your 1000 baht deposit back !

After reading through these reviews we were prepared for the worst but we were on the budget and the photos didnt look too bad so we took the risk. When we got there we found it was very easy to find a perfect location. We met Mrs Lee who we had read so much about, on first impression she seemed very pleasant. She asked our names and everytime we walked past her she remembered my partners name but never remembered mine. She took a 1000BHT deposit off us which we thought was quite a lot. The room was basis and clean and we even had a very small balcony, ideal for smoking on. We stayed 2 nights and then moved to somewhere close by that was cheaper and had a fridge and safety deposit box. Over all the stay was fine and we had no troulbe getting our deposit back from her.
