“great resort, relaxing, with reasonable rates.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2013 via mobile

i stayed in their fan bungalow for 500baht/night, you have to take your chances though as fan bungalows aren't available online, only walk in, i was so lucky that one was available when i visited koh phangan. the bungalow ia single detached. with private terrace and hammock. the whole resort is built on a cliff giving you a view of mae nam beach from the private terrace. it is just a short walk down stairs to the beach, going up to the hotel from beach isn't difficult too..maybe 15 steps. the pool and the restaurant are a treat and adds charm to this resort. i highly recommend this resort for all the right reasons.

Cannot fault this place, everything about it is perfect. The staff, the food, the prices, location and facilities. It is amazing just sitting in the infinity pool with a cocktail after pigging out on delicious, yet very affordable, Thai food. Best place we stayed in during our trip to Thailand!

Location of the resort is outstanding! Great views over sea and the bay. On arrival payment is no1. This is no warm welcome. Housekeeping is upon own request. Roomkey (only one is given) must be handed over to the reception. No safety deposit box in the room. Behind the reception is a locker, but you have to buy your own lock! Asked if I could buy one from them then they pointed met to a 7/11 store in town....what a service. Breakfast is not included but that's no problem. Had a discussion abaout 'coffee' that the serve. It's Nescafe and not fresh brewed. You can't sell this without making notice of Nescafe coffee. Room was basic. Bed was ok. Not a single hanger for clothing or towels present in the room. (we stayed in the 4 pers room under the pool).

Swimming pool is great an from the pool a beautifull view over the beach and bay.
Lunch and dinner at the resort restaurant is good. Also nice restaurants at the beach. There is a stair to the beach. In the afternoon and evening hou have to wade through the seawater for about 20 meters.

Pick up service from the pier to the resort. No delivery service to the pier. 150 Bath per adult.

Wrap up: great location, but the have to learn hospitality. Not worth the price.

Spent 5 nights in seaview deluxe. Overall experience was very pleasant and relaxing. There were few things to be improved however.

First the positives:
-Very relaxing and chillout atmosphere, nice view from the resort to the sea and neighboring Haad Yao.
-Staff was friendly in general.
-Seaview deluxe room was ok, spacious. Bed was comfortable. Views to the sea very nice.
-Wifi was good in room and in public area, pretty fast too (ad ~5-10mbps at best).
-Restaurant was very good! We ate only Thai dishes there (every day at least once), they were excellent! Especially Thai soups were delicious!
-Restaurant and bar played excellent music: reggae, dub, triphop etc chillout tunes. The music combined with excellent food and drinks and hammocks in the bar area was extremely relaxing!
-The resorts own pets, a golden retriever and a parrot, were very cute and friendly too.
-Free transport from the pier to the resort at arrival.

Then the negatives:
-The room lacked some basic amenities at arrival (toiletpaper, drinking glass).
-No breakfast included. The restaurant served ok breakfast menu however.
- There is a small notebook for every room where the guests are expected to write down all the foods, drinks and services (like laundry) purchased during their stay in the resort, including their prices. Based on the books notes, the bill is to be settled every friday and at checkout. This practise seemed somewhat impractical to us, since we've never encountered this anywhere else before during our travels. It was hard to see the benefit from it, since apparently the staff kept their own book of our purchases anyways.
-A 3% service fee when paying with credit card in the reception.
-No safety deposit box in rooms. If needed, the guest could use one in the reception, but during limited hours.
-Room cleaning only in demand. If room cleaning needed, the room key was to be left to the reception. This practise also seemed impractical since there was only one key per room.
-The rooms main doors and balcony doors locks were very stiff and at times wouldn't function properly (hard to open).
-Lots of stairs (wasn't really a problem for us though). Access to the beach from the resort (steep stairs) was somewhat difficult during high tide (in the afternoons) since the water would be so high that you had to walk up to you knees in water for about 20m to get to the beach.
-At times it felt the staff would disappear from the restaurant/bar area, making it difficult to order drinks etc.
-A few birds in small cages in the restaurant area. We think the birds should roam free (...or at least in an much bigger cage)

...Yet despite all this, would go back. The pros outweighted the cons :)

We stayed at High Life for 2 weeks and couldn't have enjoyed it more.
The staff were extremely helpful with our bookings for day trips and sorting our taxi and boat upon departing.
We ate at the restaurant at least once a day and were never disappointed.
The infinity pool makes it all worth while, whether you wake up and go for a dip or brave the stairs down to the beach and come up to watch the sunset.
The bungalow we stayed at was quite old, reminded me of grandmas house with tacky curtains and green walls, with old sheets to match. The shower wasn't blocked off in the bathroom which was a bit awkward and annoying with a wet floor and toilet, but still couldn't complain with wifi, a hammock with a deck, and an ocean view.
Our stuff was safe in our rooms which were cleaned only when you put your key in the box to get cleaned.
I would highly recommend High Life to those looking for a comfortable place to stay on a beautiful beach away from the madness of had rin. I don't want to leave!
Watch out for cow frogs when it rains though! The owner tried clearing them away but they find their way bak and "moo" into all hours of the night. Funny but not ideal when trying to sleep!

We booked a Deluxe Bungalow with seaview - it was great! We had a perfect view over the beach and loved the nice view from the pool and the bar.
Unfortunately our sheet on the bed was a little bit dirty and has not been changed after mentioning it for two times.
Nevertheless service, food&drinks were always very good.
This Location has a good ratio of costs and performance!

Getting to the beach in the evening is quite difficult - you can't take the steps due to high tide!

Benefits:

A cheeky resident parrot that will steal your fags as soon as you look the other way. He's free flying, not chained up and well treated it seems

Good music playing reggae and trip hop/electronic. The local bars and accommodation played very average music by comparison

Food is good quality and not slow at all. Previous reviews had described the lack of staff as being an issue but we never experienced slow food or service

There is a bike rental place adjacent which is run by High Life which were TBH200 for the day. The bikes were good quality, modern and without any scratches

You can access the main beach to the north but there is also a small beach immediately to the south which is normally deserted

Staff are all very friendly as you would expect and were always on hand. Rarely had to go looking for someone

15 mins on a bike to thong sala

The menu is fairly extensive covering the usual Thai food (Indonesian nasi goreng - a personal fav) and European stuff including pizza, sandwiches, burgers, pastas etc

Negatives:

The lack of a safe in the rooms is a bit annoying but you actually get used to it. They have lockers which are accessible between 08:00 and 22:00 for which you will need your own lock. We we regularly able to access the lockers well after 22:00 and never had an issue retrieving our things.

As its perched out a headland, you will have to walk to find other places to eat in the evening. Not a massive headache as the walk is short, if a little hilly (10 mins). This also means, like most places outside thong sala and haad rin, that you will need a bike or the regular share taxis to go further afield

There were a few families at High Life so the kids to adults ratio in the infinity pool can be a bit off putting. Having said that, it never really caused us issues

A pool table would be a good addition

The garden view rooms are fairly basic but include tv, aircon, fridge. They felt a bit over priced to us, but we may be remembering our travelling days where everything cost pennies and was always up for negotiation. The sea view rooms were very nice, but at over twice the price were not an option. Essentially the differences between the sea view and garden view were: the view, slight size difference and hot tub (which was a bath and only fitted one person). Sea view were very nice but I wouldn't personally pay the difference to upgrade. Horses for courses however
