“Comfortable laid-back beach huts in a tranquil setting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2013

We chose Green Papaya because we wanted a holiday staying right on the beach but with a bit of extra comfort and it didn’t let us down. Having researched all the beach accommodation on Hat Salad, this is clearly on the best part of the beach; quieter with less coral and finer sand. We stayed in a Garden Cottage that was a stone’s throw away from the beach front but slightly set back overlooking the gorgeous pool. The room was a good size with a comfy bed, good facilities and a large bathroom with a lovely novel outdoor shower, don’t worry if you get back from the beach too late and want to avoid the mozzies, there’s also a shower head on the indoor bath that you can use. The room was clean, well kept and on the whole bug-free.

The small resort is peaceful and friendly and very family orientated but we weren’t the only couple without kids there. Away from all the parties this is a peaceful beach and we slept like babies at night. There’s a raised-boat-style restaurant where they serve a decent breakfast but nothing exceptional. Its restaurant right by the beach is small with a limited menu but the staff are absolutely lovely. As with most places on the beach they offer massage from the charismatic masseuse which rivals any Thai massage we’ve had.

For Thailand the price is no more than you would expect, it’s not cheap but you are paying for the comfort and location on the beach. Overall a great spot to kick back and relax in comfort.

Room Tip: Go for a Garden Cottage if you can, seemed like they were worth the extra money

The Highs . Had mailed the GP that I wanted a transfer to resort from dock 400bt thought was a bit high and I would be celebrating my wedding anniversary at the resort . We were met by Mr Wee holding a sign saying wedding couple he told anyone we walked past we were on honeymoon even stop on way to get my wife a bouquet of flowers . He made us laugh with his impressions of our voices and I have never met such a happy man . I was show our room and was blown away it was very large L shaped room with large bed , large L shaped settee ,tv,cd,fridge ect but no safe !.opening onto large balcony 2 loungers and large jacuzzi half open shower leading to bathroom .GP has a really nice pool with plenty of loungers , restaurant by beach with fantastic views . Had fantastic spicy seafood Tam yam soup . Beach is great and water clear and Calm . Hired scooters from next resort as was warned not to hire from GP as he makes up damage charges it was only 300bt including fuel .The lows to fill jacuzzi you have to start in morning as water runs out only a quarter full and go back and back I used kettles to ! There is never any hot water in wash basin and shower often cold .we booked a jacuzzi room to use the jacuzzi in our 4 day stay we could only use it once . I complained at reception 3 times and was told there is never any water in basin ,seemed did not seemed worried I asked to see the manager he was never there but was told he would say you can leave if you like but with no refund . Had a cleaning cloth folded as a hand towel . Went to restaurant one evening had spring rolls and green curry worst food in Thailand bit strange after my amazing Tam yam . Breakfast bit hit or miss often cold . Wifi not always good . But the GP is a great resort needs to get water problems sorted out get rid of manager get Mr Wee as manager it would be a amazing resort but all in all there was more highs than lows and we enjoyed our stay .

The highs. I mailed the GP that I was celebrating my anniversary and wanted a transfer from port to resort it was 400bt which I thought was a bit expensive . I was met by our driver Mr Wee who had a sign saying just married he told everyone at the port we were on our honeymoon , we laughed all the way to the GP with his jokes and taking off our accent, I have never met a more happy guy as Mr Wee. When shown our room I was blown away large L shaped large room .large bed , L shaped setee , fridge, cd,tv. Large balcony with 2 loungers , large Jacuzzi ,outside shower and bathroom .no safe which I think you need.the pool was really nice plenty of loungers , restaurant by the beach had amazing spicy sea food Tom yam soup . And nice beach and clear carm water . The lows never any hot water in sink in bathroom ,if you could get any hot water for jacuzzi it ran out only a quarter full , shower often cold . In our 4 day stay could only use jacuzzi once started to fill in morning then in afternoon and used kettles spoke on 3 occasions about could not use the jacuzzi but staff where not interested wanted to speak to manager but was never there and was told the manager would say if you don't like it you can leave with no refund !!. Used resultant one evening had spring rolls and green curry worst food in Thailand strange after my amazing Tam yam . Breakfast was ok but food should be covered up because of flies . But the GP is a great resort had a amazing room pity you could not use jacuzzi as that's why we booked and payed extra for the room !!.hird a scooter was warned not to hire one at resort the guy rips you off says you have damaged the scooter hired one next door 300bt including fuel . There are se good some great restaurant just down the beach . They need to sort the water out or get rid of the jacuzzis , sack the manager and get Mr Wee in charge and it could be a top resort .

My girlfriend and me stayed at this resort middle of feb 2013. Although the resort lies in a beautiful green surrounding at the nice beach of salad, the resort needs some refurbishment. It looks like the management wants to maximise their earnings and minimise their expenses (with cheap myanmyar staff as well). Nobody of the staff seems really motivated to work there and each extra mile is too much work for them. The greetings of the staff i.e. is rather a must than from the bottom of their heart. During our 5 day stay there were for us mid 40ers far too many families with small babys/children at the resort crying all around the pool. This is just a fact. All in all a disappointed stay which is completely overrated and overpriced. We are happy to stay another 8 days on the island, but move on further to ao thong nai pan noi.

Just returned (4 Feb 2013) from a family holiday at Green Papaya resort. It was the most relaxing holiday i had ever had. I haven't slept that well for years. We met family from Australia and both adults and children had a great time. The staff were fantastic and went all out to make one of our parties birthday really special from decorating their room with flowers to fireworks on the beach.

The whole experience was fantastic and the staff were extremely helpful. The accomodation, the pool area and beach were perfect and we plan to go back next year.

There were no childrens activies just the childrens pool next to the adult one but all 4 children of various ages were happy. The staff loved the children and even made some of them toys out of palm leaves.

Fabulous beach and resturants and the taxi to the food market at Thong Sala was only 150 B one way. The Masons Arms is a good English pub just outside Thong Sala where you could get english food and beer (if you felt the need).

Room Tip: We had a deluxe cottage which was excellent and we loved the outdoor shower (although there is also...

We ( German couple ) spent two weeks in this resort and we are happy about our decision. Stuff and management are very helpful and friendly. The pool was clean and perfect for swimming. We choosed the two bedroom apartment in the back of the property, which was clean and comfortable.

The breakfast in the "boat" was fantastic and the view is unforgetable.

All in all, we can really recomment this hotel.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2013

We stayed at the resort from January 5, 2013 - January 10, 2013, during the resort's high season. I had reserved two cabins for 4 people and ultimately spent over 62,000 baht in accommodation and food charges at this resort. The resort itself is set in a beautiful location and the rooms are fairly comfortable. The staff at the restaurant are also fairly friendly and overall our stay at the resort was positive until things started going wrong.

This resort's manager is solely focused on money and does not care whatsoever about guest safety. The grounds of the resort have many rusty nails hidden in the grassy areas around the cabins. Three days into our stay, I stepped on one of these hidden nails and ended up with it going approximately 3/4 of an inch into the bottom of my foot. This happened at about 6:30 A.M. after I walked out of my cabin in the morning. There were no staff available to respond and we were forced to find someone in the nearby village to take us to the hospital at considerable expense. Despite the inconvenience, expenses incurred and the fact that the last 3 days of my stay were significantly hampered by having a bandaged foot that I was advised to keep dry, the manager and resort refused to take any responsibility or even consider paying the minor hospital charge (744 baht).

When we spoke to the manager about the incident, he admitted that the resort was covered in rusty nails but refused to take any responsibility for the incident. He then had the nerve to state that if he placed heroin underneath our cabin and called the police that we would be responsible and go to jail. He also then accused us of lying about the nail going into my foot and stated we could not prove it had happened. He made these comments after he looked at the nail and admitted it was from the resort and that there were many on the ground. He further admitted that they regularly fell out of the would cabins.

We were not provided with any room tour or explanation of what was in the rooms. The rooms appeared not to have safes (we were advised at checkout that there was one in the corner of the closet). The door locks could be opened without the key very quickly (simply by jiggling enough or with any flat object). My friends in the other cabin both confirmed that money was stolen from their cabin. The hotel then pointed out that there was a room safe that had not been shown to them earlier. If you stay at the resort, make sure you use the room safe and keep an eye on your belongings.

On checkout, we were presented with a bill for charges incurred at the restaurant. We had previously arranged for a taxi to the ferry terminal to catch a ferry so that we could make our flight from Koh Samui to Bangkok and then home to Canada. The majority of charges were not signed for and we were not allowed to review the invoices. We were told that we could either wait for the police, which the manager knew would cause us to miss our ferry, or we could pay the charges and use the taxi.

Of final note, the resort is set into the jungle and no steps have been taken to minimize mosquitoes or snakes. While we were staying there, a snake was found in the breakfast restaurant. I personally was not bugged by this, but I understand some people may be more concerned about these issues.
