My wife and I stayed here for 4 nights in a Sea View Cottage. We were picked up at the pier -- by the guy who seems to do everything at the hotel -- very promptly. He had a big sign that said “SUNSET COVE” and stood right at the place where everybody exits the boat. We piled our stuff into the hotel’s truck and made our way the 15 minutes to Sunset Cove.
The resort is really nice. It’s set back off the road so that you never hear passing cars. The entire hotel seems to gather around the pool from sun up to sun down (so a good tip is to pick up a “pool towel” from the front desk and claim your chairs right away before or after breakfast). The infinity pool is gorgeous – it’s quite big and is surrounded by lounge chairs and several towering palm trees that grow right out of the poolside patio.
The breakfast every morning (included in your room charge) is really good. Basically, they give you a sheet of paper with all the options (eggs, bacon, toast, pancakes, waffles, fruit, juices, bottle of water, yogurt, etc.) and you check off what you would like and they make it and bring it to you. I strongly recommend the waffles – I had them EVERY morning with strawberry sauce (along with a really good omelet) and they were incredibly delicious.
We ate lunch twice and dinner twice there during our stay as well. The food is good and really quite reasonable. Pizzas and pasta are a bit pricey (like 200 Baht) but for a large dish of really good chicken Pad Thai you would pay about 80 Baht (about $2.50 US). Beer and soda was also reasonably priced – but we also walked up to the 7-11 (about 10 minute walk) and stocked up on refreshments and snacks to enjoy at night or for sitting by the pool. There are also a couple of other restaurants within walking distance of the hotel – both on the beach and the road. We ate at the really good Italian place down the beach (La Vita Dolce) and it was pricey but delicious! Some of the best tiramisu I have had outside of Italy.
If you stay here, “splurge” a bit and stay in a sea view cabin. They are detached cabins with your own private front porch looking out at the pool and, as the name suggests, the sea. They have a front room with TV and DVD player (no channels, just a large selection of DVDs to watch for free), a couch and mini refrigerator. The bathroom is very large with a wooden tub and shower, sink and toilet inside – along with a separate shower outside (completely private with high walls). The bedroom was also large with a very nice and comfortable bed. I think the room costs about $100 US per night which is expensive for Thailand, but worth it.
The only downside of the room is that it was hard to keep cool. There’s an air conditioner in the bedroom, but unless the room key card is placed in the energy saver slot, the air shuts off. So during the day if you go out and don’t leave your key in it can get warm quick. You also have to be sure to keep the doors to the front room and the bathroom shut to keep the cool air in the bedroom, which can make for a hot bathroom at times. But in reality, it’s no big deal. Also, wi-fi doesn’t work at all in the rooms, but is very fast if you sit in the restaurant area (we streamed a Packers game on the radio and Skyped and had no connection problems at all).
The hotel arranged for transportation for us to go to the Full Moon Party – about 30 minutes away. 200 Baht there and 200 Baht back, but definitely worth going. The party is awesome and crazy – and the driver picks you up at the hotel at 9:00 PM and then collects you from the party at either 4:00 or 6:00 AM. After a couple of buckets and beers and dancing, you really don’t want to have to worry about finding a taxi back to your hotel. (In fact, our driver picked up a couple others who stayed at about the halfway point and charged them 350 Baht each – and they were so happy to only have to pay that!)
