“Unbelievable beach. Great location. Good value. Basic Accommodation.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2014

You are paying for the location, and the price is good. Thongtapan is on the best part of what is surely the best beach on Ko Phangan. We had one of the two beachfront superior bungalows (#2), and loved being able to step outside of our room onto the beach. We also loved the restaurant...the food was good and setting was great. The whole set up in the area of Thongtapan is just really laid back and relaxing with everything you need. The rooms are very, very basic and not decorated, but okay for the value given where you are. They were clean and safe, but not very inviting. A little money spent on the rooms could go a long way. So while we weren't in love with our bungalow, we loved where we were at and honestly didn't spend much time inside...and you can't beat the value for location.

At first we thought the staff was quite rude, but after spending a bit more time around them we ended up really liking them and finding them pretty helpful/accommodating.

This resort is really good value for money. I was surprised that the room was so nice for the money we paid. Yes, there is no fridge, that is the only thing I was missing, but still you get what you pay for and we could suvive without a fridge..

We stayed in the bungalows on the hill and the environment around it was really nice, with lots of green trees and animals to look at in the afternoons (beautiful birds, butterflies, bats, geckos..).The bungalow itself is very nice and cosy and we really enjoyed staying here. The location is great on a very nice beach. Many of the other hotels in the area are expensive ones and the beach is clean and very nice. Thongtapan is located at the end of the beach and have their own lovely stretch of sand. It was easy to get here now when the road from Thong sala has been concreted.

The owners were very nice and helpful and they have kayaks and SUPs that you can rent.

I would very much recommend to stay here, I would certainly like to go back.

Room Tip: The bungalows on the hill are in a very nice environment

This hotel is in the middle of nowhere and you will pay (min 1.500 Bath) a lot to any cab-driver to bring you to this place. The atmosphere of the houses is pretty basic and ours smelled terribly :(

At night there is nothing to do and if you need something you are totally dependent on the hotel staff, which is not that friendly and cooperative, in case you try to avoid overcharched priced offered by the hotel. Whenever you need a cab, you are dependent on them to call it for you and they receive really high commission from the cab driver.

The houses are totally unsafe, since you can enter every window just by pressing a little bit from the outside. Normally we always kept your belongings with us, but one morning we decided to go swimming in the sea and left some of our stuff at our house. When back, someone entered our rooms and stole most of our belonging (primarily iPhone + Cash). We demanded to call the police but the hotel manager threatened us that we will get into serious trouble when we inform the police! Since the Hostel is in the middle of nowhere we didn't really know what to do. We checked out the next day and "escaped" to another hotel in a less outback location.

Mint D, Manager at Thongtapan Resort, responded to this review, August 3, 2014
Dear Veronique,

We are disappointed to read your review, in particular your reference to fake reviews as there are several fake points with yours.

We are a small family run business that has been around for over 30 years and such libel like your comment make our hard work feel even more impossible.

Firstly we offer a taxi service from the resort to the pier at a fixed cost 300 Baht per person, which is the market price. If the guest feels it is too expensive, we would advise our guests that alternative taxis is possible in the village. In your case, you choose not to do anything and used our taxi to 'escape'. Surprising enough for someone that claimed that she was just robbed happened to have enough money to 'escape' without caring of any unnecessary add on cost. All you needed to do is to walk to the village yourselves to find one.

It is a lie that this place is isolated or 'outback' that we are the only one accommodation/ service provider on the beach. You simply choose not to do anything and demanding that we what you say. We are proud people and we are not going to act unreasonable upon your request

Secondly you never reported to us that you had been robbed, we take the safety of our guests very seriously and if anything had happened we would have driven you to the police station, which is only 5 min away, ourselves to ensure that the matter is dealt with fully and properly.

Finally to respond to your photos, one of the photos is not of the resort (it is take from someone's house in the village). And the other one showing the back of our restoration site, which did not happen during your stay but started several months after your departure. We do apologise thought that the roof of the bungalow is not cleaned to your standards.

The room was large and clean.Ok by thai standards. What a pity there is no fridge as you really need one there. Bradley, the manager was very helpfull when our toilet broke.Took 2 hours+ to fix.The Star Hut in the village in the best restaurant by far (especially their "Tom Yum Goong" Still the best swimming beach on the island.

Room Tip: Take a torch if you are walking to the village by road at night

Oh this place. I had a nightmare 12 hour journey to get to this place after a terrible bout of food poisoning. It had me from long tail boat, minibus, hot sweaty bus shack, bus, tedious boat ride, motor taxi in the dark and then a walk along the beach with my backpack. All I was thinking the whole time was, "My god this place better be worth it." I almost kissed the girl when she showed me my room. The place was clean, cool and comfortable way bigger than I imagined, with a HUGE bed and bathroom. I went to sleep listening to the waves.

The breakfast was good value and delicious. The staff were super friendly and lovely. The beach is swept everyday. The water is clear and calm. I loved this place. Everyone I met there extended their trip. I should've stayed 4 days, I stayed 10. It's a lovely setting and just incredible. It's not ideal for solo travellers as it has a real honeymoon vibe but all I wanted to do was lie in peace with my book for a few days. It was incredible. I would definitely go back and I recommended this place to so many people.

This is a resort situated on the beautiful and quiet beach of Thong Nai Pan Noi. They have the best restaurant in the area, staff is friendly and helpful. Bungalows are comfortable and simple, but a fridge and a hair dryer in a hotel, even if it's a bungalow, it's a must, and they don't have it.
Overall, it's a charming place with relaxing atmosphere, and we loved it.

We stayed at the resort for 7 nights and had such an amazing experience. With complimentary beach chairs, a very large beach front area, and a short 5 minute walk away from the main road, this resort was fantastic. The best part of the resort was definitely the friendly staff! They were so helpful and kind, especially Mint, and so helpful with everything. With such a great price and great location this resort was truly great.
