“Good place, too bad for the view”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2012

Tong Nai Pan has been our favorite holiday destination since quite some time. And thus we have seen the island and the beach of Tong Nai Pan change quite a bit. Tong Nai Pan Noi, where Panviman is located, does not feel like it did 5 years ago. Especially because of the Burirasa resort next door to Panviman. Burirasa bought a couple of restaurants (which were so charming for the area) and build a resort on that area. Too bad, as it changed the look and feel of the beach.

It also changes the view from the beach of Panviman a bit. instead of the beach and some restaurants there now is a resort with an ugly beach front view (sorry, no good words for Burirasa here).

Despite this, the resort was very nice. We stayed in a deluxe cottage (quite a walk from the reception, beach, pool and other area's) which was looking great and had great views. Spacious rooms, nice use of wood. The only thing missing was a comfortable chair.

Facilities in the resort are amazing. Pool is superb, spa facilites professional, breakfast area was amazing with lovely views over the sea. Had diner in the resort twice, not very nice. Small portions the first time. Western food the second time was not a good idea; stick to thai food on Koh Phangan.

Room Tip: Some rooms are quite a walk to public area's

We were on our honeymoon & had ordered 2 different rooms for different dates. We were upgraded to the better room (low-season) for the entire stay!

Overall a great place to stay, if it's not raining. It rained for 4 days straight & we were getting a little stir-crazy.

Make sure to take the hotel transportation from the ferry. It was much cheaper & we were sorry we didn't take advantage.

Pros:
1. Friendly staff

2. Beautiful room

3. Excellent service--they come immediately if you call

4. Library

5. DVDs available at reception--particularly nice when raining

6. Resort is beautiful

7. Decent prices for room service (chicken burger recommended) & restaurants

8. Excellent deals at beach BBQ open in evening: you get soup, salad, bread, fish, rice all for a fixed price.

9. Great entertainment at the beach restaurant in the evening

Cons:
1. Staff's poor English making it difficult to communicate

2. Not much to do if raining (fitness area all outdoor, beach too dirty & dangerous)

3. Room service/pool deck restaurant pizza was terrible: soggy & terrible-tasting sauce. Avoid!

4. They did not change the sheets one day though we had requested it. We called and they came to change them while we were in the room. My husband was appalled when they threw the pillows on the dirty floor (without changing them) and then put them back on the bed. He then asked that they change the pillow slips too & they did.

5. We booked a ferry to our next destination through the reception. We were specifically told this did not include a ride from the ferry to the next hotel, so they also helped us book a taxi. The reception, however, gave WRONG info--the ride was indeed included in the cost of the ferry. Thus we ended up having to pay for both rides, which we were not happy about.

Room Tip: The resort is on a rather remote part of the island. When it's sunny, you won't even want to...

Let me preface this by saying, I have traveled a lot. I used to backpack the world but now my fiance and we work really hard in banking and so we want our holidays to be luxurious and relaxing. We're not pretentious but we expect a certain standard when we book accommodation, especially as on Agoda this joint is rated as five star. Do not be fooled, this place is a dive. Or, an outdated maze of a resort in a shaded part of beach that people who love going to Bali and staying with dozens of other overweight couples in similarly outdated resorts would enjoy. We stayed in the hotel part (there are clearly way better rooms but I still would not recommend these after seeing them; resort vibe is terrible). I have stayed in Thailand five times over the years, often in low end backpacker huts - and they kick it over this place. At least there is atmosphere there.

Pros: honestly, the staff were friendly. It is not their fault.

Cons: resort management are the culprits; we booked for 6 nights and they would not provide us a refund after we checked out after the first night due to the 5 star misrepresentation. disgraceful. especially as they then immediately booked out our room to a French couple looking for a place to stay (it was busy, day before full moon party).
- small beach and shady, hardly any sun
- NOT five star. not even close.
- too big and maze like. i love exercise but all the stairs etc will trouble some. be warned.
- rooms are all dark wood, dated, dingy and smelly
- fitness centre is like something out of 1950s north korea. It is outdoor, rusted and akin to childrens play equipment.
- no atmosphere

If you want a great place on this fantastic piece of paradise, check out Anantara Resort up the beach. Truly spectacular. Review to follow on that. I write this from Anantara.

Room Tip: Just don't stay there. Worst place I have been in my five trips to Thailand.

This hotel is located at the opposite side of the island from the main ferry port. This makes it rather isolated but gives it a very peaceful feel. The staff are very helpful and everybody was very pleasant.

Breakfast is a buffet and there is a good choice of Thai and Western food. The view from the restaurant is spectacular: ocean, beach and sunshine ! There is a beach BBQ and a main restaurant. There is also a selection of restaurants / bars about 300m outside the entrance to the hotel. We ate most nights in this area and we were very happy with the food.

The room was clean and the TV and air conditioning worked. Room staff made some very interesting animals from towels and we found these beautiful and very much appreciated the effort. The WiFi connection in the room is poor. However, the signal strength was very good at reception and in the restaurant.

This is a good hotel to come for several days to relax and enjoy a peaceful atmosphere. We will come again but the mountain drive and distance from "full moon" parties may make it unsuitable for some people.

Room Tip: If you want good WiFi get a room near reception.
