5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2014

5 friends and I finished a months travelling in Sunset Hill. The staff were so nice you couldn't ask for more! Although the food was slow at times, you forgave it as they were apologetic and sincere in doing so. The views are incredible, the infinity pool amazing, as well as the hammock and swing. The hotel organised a pre full moon party and really made everyone feel welcome. The facilities in the room were amazing, and very modern. I will 100% be back to Sunset Hill if I return to Thailand as the distance was nice from haadrin when recovering from the late nights before. Pure bliss I was so sad leaving, it topped off our holiday and we had very fond memories returning home to Ireland.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2014

We arrived in Koh Phangan on a Sunday, the hotel kindly picked us up from the pier for 200 baht each. As we were on the way to the hotel we started to realise how far out we were from the main area - haadrin. We were getting slightly concerned as we didnt want to be spending much on taxis especially with the big parties we were planning on attending - the full moon, jungle party, pool party etc. Once we arrived the view from the reception area was amazing, the best we had seen throughout our whole travels. Our room was a garden room which was lovely, however we didnt have a balcony or a seating area outside which the website states all rooms do have. However that wasnt a major issue. The rooms were fully equiped, however we noticed that the main feature missing which we think is a must, is a telephone to reception. We often had to use our own mobile phones to call recpeption which is costly when our bill provider is in England. It also became a worry that if there was an emergency, being travellers we would have no idea who to call, its not as easy as calling 999 as it is in England. We feel the hotel should provide a phone to a 24 hour reception, and they should provide a welcome booklet stating information of what to do incase of an emegency and other vital informaion that could be needed at any time.
Our first nights stay wasnt the best as there was a power cut and our air con wasnt working properly. We complained about this early the next morning and the hotel staff were right onto the compliant and took our keys to fix it. Within a matter of an hour, we had our keys returned saying all was fixed. When we went back to our room we had a whole new system installed in our room, with a fan above the bed and a new system for the aircon which then worked perfectly! The staff are very efficient and helpful in situations like this. The main negative about this hotel is the restaurant. We often got told most lunch times that only thai food was available. To some this may not be an issue but after travelling in Thailand for 5 weeks sometimes thai is a little too heavy for a lunch, and we were craving things such as salad and sandwiches which were on the menu but we were not allowed!! As for the food itself its not great, we ordered the vegetable spring rolls one night and they were served to us frozen. We complained and the waiters simply laughed at us and took it away. We didnt quite understand if they understood themselves but it was taken off the final bill anyway. The menu is quite small and when you get told its only thai food serving the options are minimal. The food as a whole was pretty disappointing and not to a nice standard. The waiters often didnt understand what we were asking for and served us the wrong things. When ordering a ginger beer, we had to point and show the waiter where the ginger beers are as he did not understand what we were asking for. We understand there is a language barrier but all staff should know the menu and what drinks they serve to avoid negativity. There is a large selection of pizzas on the menu however this is from a local pizzeria so allow time for it to be delivered! We found that by the time it was delivered and served on a plate it was often cold. Pizzas were the most expensive food on the menu and not worth the hassle.
The wifi in the hotel was mixed, we often called the reception to ask to switch it on and off and then it worked fine, but sometimes to get reception to do that, it took a few calls! Due to the hotel being so far out and quite a long walk away from any shops, we feel sunset hill needs to provide a covience store or something that allows guests to buy drinks and food, as there is a massive fridge to store whatever you want in, in your rooms. We feel a shop would do many benefits to the hotel. The pool area is nice, maybe decking instead of grass as when you get out of the pool all the mud sticks to your feet which isnt very pleasant! The pool is quite small, and made our hair go green! So warning for all blondes do not go under the water!! This wasnt a massive issue however it is a slight annoyance but not much can be done about that!
After 6 nights of staying in our garden room, we had to upgrade to a sea view room as the hotel was getting fully booked for the full moon party! We paid an extra £80 a night for this room, and to be quite honest we preferred our previous garden room! The view from the sea room is gorgeous and on a beautiful day it would be lovely. That wasnt the negative point. The room was a lot older than the garden room we had previously. We could tell this by the bathroom, quite horrible old tiles with mould round and not to the standard we had just come from. I understand that prices go up for the views, but the room wasnt worth an extra £80 and if we could we would go back to the garden room! All in all the rooms and hotel area are very clean and the staff couldnt be more helpful for anything you want.
Due to the hotel being so far out, you will find yourself needing taxis daily, especially if your here for a long period of time. We requested a taxi and got told it would take half an hour to arrive. This was slightly frustrating as anywhere else on the island you can get them instantly! The taxis were quite expensive, and other hotel guests told us that when returning back to the hotel after a day out or whatever, the taxi drivers often ask for an extra 100 baht to take you to the hotel itself, as it is situated on top of a large hill. We however always managed to get taxi drivers who drove us up without asking for more money, so just a warning! The taxis are more expensive when the hotel organises than when you get your own taxi. We found that an organised taxi to haadrin cost 300 baht each (for 2) and on the way back only cost 200 baht each.
Overall, we did have a lovely stay and this hotel could truly be amazing if some effort and time were put into it. I would not recommend to stay here for full moon purely because of how far out the hotel is, its not ideal when your coming home in early hours of the morning.
Thank you very much for having us, the views were incredible and it's an amazing place to watch the sunset!

Dear Thaitravelgirls,

Thank you very much for your stay at Sunset Hill Resort and for your review here on tripadvisor.com.
We are happy to learn that you enjoyed our view, rooms, facilities and our service. Please allow me to respond to a few of the issues mentioned in your review.
Sunset Hill Resort indeed sits on a tropical hill (hence the amazing views) as clearly mentioned on the website and mentioned quite a few times on Tripadvisor too. The description for the Garden View roomtype clearly states that only ground floor units have a terrace and upper floor units are more spacious (ideal for 2 single beds).

Haad Rin is actually not the main area of Koh Phangan anymore, it only is during Full Moon parties. The rest of the month other parts of the island are more popular. Most other moon parties are located in the Ban Tai area, which is near as far from our resort as coming from Haad Rin. However the increasingly popular Moon Set (Pirate Bar) party is directly down the hill (10 minutes walking) on Haad Chao Phao beach.
Because the taxi service has to pick up our guests at the hotel it will cost slightly more than stopping a taxi passing by down at the local road, as the driver will have to travel from their current location to pick you up and then go straight to your destination. You mentioned a taxi taken from Haad Rin is cheaper then to Haad Rin but this only has to do with the amount of people in the Songthaew (shared) taxi. If 4 or more people the price is 200 THB but if less people the price is 300 THB. Unfortunately there are no meter taxi’s on Koh Phangan (and other Thai islands) yet.

For your convenience and easy room service we do now provide a local mobile phone (on request) for our guests with some credit already on it. The local emergency numbers are pre-installed and ready to use. The Swimming pool chorine level is set as normal standard; we agree that people who are allergic to chorine or have bleached hair should not go under the water.

I was certainly concerned to learn of your dissatisfaction in regards to the restaurant service. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused and rest assured that we will certainly look into the various things you mentioned, especially with regards to the food handling, menu options and most importantly about the communication from our waiter in the restaurant, we will train them better. We like your idea of having a convenience store in our resort and already have started to provide snacks, cigarettes, lighters, take away dishes and bottled drinks for our guests. If you like renting a motorbike (200 thb per day) the nearest 7-eleven would be less than 5 minutes away.

Thank you for the valuable feedback provided and all the positive words about room cleanliness, friendly staff and sunset view. You are very welcome to come back another time (maybe with your boyfriends) to ensure that we have implemented your feedback.
Warm regards from the Sunset Hill Team!

to stay in Sunset Hill. The view is stunning and it is worth walking everyday high up the hill to see it in the morning. There is nice beach down but in June it is shallow, so we rent a motorbike and went to Thong Nai Pan Yai. The service is more than helpful and nice! Cons for me: I'm a smoker and I wasn't allowed to smoke in the room.

Hi Grzesio,

Thanks for the nice review it I was our great pleasure to have you stay in our resort!
Good news: smoking is actually a bad habit so you'll thank us later haha. No seriously there is plenty of space on the large balcony or garden or rooftop or at the pool etc to smoke its only not allowed to smoke in the room itself.
Hope you had a great remainder of your holiday and we are looking forward to see you back!
Warm regards from the Sunset Hill Team

Stayed here for two nights for the Full Moon Party. Was a little sceptical about the distance from Haad Rin where the party takes place, but the girls at the hotel arrange a shared taxi to Haad Rin for the guests which is very cheap, and you can always arrange to return with the guests to save money. My favorite part of the hotel is the infinity pool. I arrived very very jet lagged, and ended up waking up at about 5 in the morning. I had a walk down to the pool and managed to watch the sunrise over the infinity pool while everybody else was asleep, it was the definition of paradise. I would highly recommend this hotel, especially for couples. The location is good, there isn't a whole lot of things to do in the area, so I'd suggest either hiring a scooter or staying within the hotel and relaxing. There is also a steep hill up to the hotel, but the view at the top makes it worth it all. The girls at the hotel are more than happy to help with any question or queries you have, and the breakfast/bar area hosts some amazing views.

We stayed here for 4 nights. From the first moment the staff here were amazing. It was low season so we got a good deal. The hotel has the most amazing views. Up there with the top hotels we ever stayed in for views. Room was nice and big with good tv and dvd player. Pool is nice. Might be busy in high season as it is nit the biggest pool.
Only downsides was the restaurant. It was low season si the restaurant was not open every night as chef was off. The nearest other restaurant was 5 mins away at the end of a big hill. It is a hard walk. I woudl recommend hiring a scooter if u stay here as there is not many shops or restaurants close by. Saying that we managed without one. Would certainly recommend this hotel without hesitation.
