We stayed in Shiralea for a couple of nights whilst we were on Koh Phangan. Adorable little huts with hammocks out the front. The rooms were clean, as was the bathroom and the staff were helpful and friendly. We opted for the hut with a cold shower but it got warmed by the sun anyway so it was never freezing! They also had a swimming pool and a communal area for everyone to laze about and chill out. Well worth the money - would throughly reccommend!

You are also only a 3 minute walk to the beach. Who can complain about that? The restaurant in Shiralea was very reasonably priced - especially when you compare to the prices on the beach front and the food wasnt too bad.

The only trouble you may have is if there is a full moon party going on and you are not attending, you may hear some of the party goers coming back - I guess this depends on how lightly you sleep. Some drunk numb nut knocked on our door wanting to come in at 2am so of course, we woke up!

Room Tip: Fan was more than plentiful when we were there!

We stayed here for 3 nights during the Full Moon Party and the resort was excellant!

The bungolows were very clean and had its own hammock which i relaxed on for hours! The resort is around 30 mins away from the full moon party area which was good because we could get away from all the noise and drunk people when we wanted too!

The staff were very friendly and helpful and it felt more like we were at uni where we were chilling and drinking with friends. The main area was the bar/restaurnat and chilling area. The food was very nice - with a nice collection of cocktails and good choice of food. We would chill at the pool, eat and drink and then chill more! The beach was only 5 mins away and the resort had thier own massage lady who was very good - def recommended!

We wanted to have a thai cooking class when we were there however as it was the full moon party the courses were not available but we were offered a class by the chef at the resort - which was very nice of them to offer!! but as we were partying all weekend we didnt have time to do that.

I would def stay there for longer next time I visit.

Thanks guys for making our stay fun and enjoyable!

We've been travelling for 3 months through SEA and have stayed at many great places but Shiralea topped them all. If there was one place in Thailand worthy of coming back to, it's for this resort.

Bungalows are extremely good value (nice big shower), location in the nice coconut garden, close to the beach perfect, there's always cool music playing (not that chart stuff, luckily) and the restaurant/bar/movie corner (all with fast wifi) is just great to hang out. All this is topped with great staff who are very experienced in serving backpackers. They live there, with you (even if power's out because of heavy rainfall).

Don't expect a big party/entertainment/gourmet beach. In fact, Shiralea restaurant was the best to eat (I wouldn't vote for safe food at the other restaurants, trust me). However, occasionally, when there's enough people at Shiralea, they'll go to the beach to party, with all the Shiralea staff of course (be aware of the free girly drinks) ;-)

The atmosphere is very relaxed, people staying there love nature, a relaxed vibe and easy-listening music. We'll be back for sure on our next Thailand visit, hopefully with better weather. Until then, it's hard to go back to civilization when you've been to this piece of paradise!

I spent a week here in August '10 with my girlfriend. We had found it advertised on the internet and booked by e-mail prior to arriving. We found the room ready for us when we arrived. It was fairly quiet when we were there so most of the people we saw around the place were staff/owners, and people who worked at Reefers, the on site diving school. They were all very friendly and they gave the place a feeling more of meeting fellow travellers than a service relationship. But despite this requesting service never felt uncomfortable (like it does sometimes if you go to a bar or for a meal and your friend serves you). One of the owners, Geoff, told me they intended to create the sort of place they wished had existed when they were backpacking here. And this is the feeling, and atmosphere you get from the staff, they may not be professional hoteliers, but they know what people go to Koh Phanang for and for that reason they have what has to be the best place on the Island. Ask Geoff about the history of Shirelea, and its amazing pool. its a great story.
Richie, another owner and his friend from NZ really made the stay for us. After arriving back at 4 am to find him and his friend trying to break into his own bar (the bar is far enough away from the bungalows for this not to bother any guests trying to sleep) we drank with him a fair bit. He's great fun, and knows the island well, recommending, and offering to take us places, such as a good tattooist when I said I was thinking of getting one finished.
What I've said so far are the reasons I've given Shiralea 5 stars. The atmosphere is second to none, as the the staff.
The accommodation:
We stayed in a fan bungalow with 2 kingsize beds. (the smaller bungalows available now had not yet been built) The bungalows are a good size with plenty of floor space despite the 2 huge beds with a separate bathroom/toilet. They were above average for the price. The only issues we had were the shower pressure, it went from unnoticeable to unbearable at roughly 1-2 minute intervals (but hey, your on an island in Thailand and paying next to nothing), and the lack of storage space. We were provided with a rail and that was it (but again, it is a backpackers resort. I suppose the place feels like its an expensive resort so when the reality of budget accommodation hits you're slightly taken aback)

The restaurant is blooming good.

Other things of note:
Right next to Had Yao beach (about 1 minute walk), a fantastic beach with great restaurants and great bars. It has a fair amount of shallow coral very close to shore in, great for snorkelling. And the Eagle bar at the end of the beach serves great cocktails an good western food, and good Thai food for that matter.
There are several shops nearby with plenty of stock.

I could happily have never left.

This is a great backpackers resort, it is very comfortable and relaxing. Nice pool on the grounds, easy access to the beach. Staff is very helpful in organizing activities and giving island advice. Rooms were very clean, had hot water showers, which even the 4 stars I stayed in elsewhere in Thailand did not. Love the hammock's on the porch, nice to just relax. The restaurant serves great food and drink, we did venture out for breakfast to Mandala, the yoga/restaurant around the corner, this had fabulous crepes and coffee, and great yoga! Ko Phangan has a very hippie, laid back vibe, if you like more 4 or 5 star hotels, and more amenities then I would stay in Koh Samui. Also there is alot of dogs wandering around the whole island, this is very hard to see along with excess amounts of garbage all over. Shiralea will treat you like family!

We booked a bungalow here based on this website and their homepage, but we got very disappointed when we got there. The bungalows are nice, but they are not located very nicely. We felt like we were camping in the middle of the bush. We had to pay extra for toilet paper, cleaning and new towels. There were not much people staying there, so it was quite lonely in the restaurant.

We didn¨t stay there very long. We went to the beach and got a bungalow situated ON the beach for a much lower price. We strongly recommend people to live on the beach in stead as you get much more value for your money.
