“perfect for what we needed....”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 24, 2012

we were travelling as a big group of 10 people, koh phanang was a stop specifically for the BLACK MOON PARTY and this is why we chose this hotel as it was just a short beach walk away from the party.

the hotel itself is in the middle of nowhere on a beach, so i suggest that you hire bikes to get around, we hired bikes for the day to cruise and see the island it was perfect..............
The hotel does have a great pool overlooking the ocean, it was clean and the gardens surrounding it very pretty. the beach and sea in front wasn't that great and you can't swim in the sea, but the pool is perfect and so relaxing.

we all took deluxe rooms and they perfect for our night there.

The staff are very friendly, and even though the drinks and food were slightly more expensive then other places they were great, and the food portions very big, the dinner , breakfast & lunch that we all ate there were very tasty.

We've just returned from the trip of a lifetime in Thailand and our favourite part of the trip was most definitely at Morning Star. The staff were wonderful and even though the site we booked through got our booking wrong, Morning Star agreed to the changes and were very accommodating throughout our 5 day stay.

The staff are lovely and became our friends by the end - Nnenn, who works in the pool bar was so lovely and chatty, remembering all of our names and providing a really good service. For the money, this hotel is really great.

The beach is quiet and peaceful and we never struggled for loungers, there's also a really nice hammock to relax in. The pool is great too, clean and right next to the beach.

As we were a group of 8 girls heading to the full moon party, we appreciated being 10 minutes out of town away from the craziness of haad rin, but only a short journey in. I've read some of the other reviews from families with children and yes I'd say it isn't great if you have kids as there was a really loud pre-party with DJ, but for us, this was perfect - we absolutely loved it!

Spacious clean rooms, safety deposit, big beds, tv, great air con....

Can't wait to return there next year.

My boyfriend and I stayed here for one week after the full moon party. We showed up unexpected (we had not advanced booked) and asked if they had anything available for the days we wanted to stay and they booked us, we had to pay half for the deposit right then. When we showed up a few days later, we were booked, they put us in the farthest bungalow on the right, right in front of the beach and it was astounding! Air conditioning, mini bar, sooo clean, great bathroom, floor to ceiling windows with a direct view of the ocean. To get your room clean with new sheets every day for free, you just need to leave the key at reception every day.

The pool is very clean, shallow and quaint. When we were there there was virtually nobody there, and we got slow poolside service (but who cares, it's Thai time). The owners (whom I believe are Russian) never acknowleged us or said hello which we thought was a tad offputting, but it didn't ruin my stay. It is a little hard to find off the beaten track, but it's a good thing. If you need to walk to the stores, it's perhaps a 10 minute walk to the main road.
This was pretty much my favorite place to stay on Ko Phangan. The people who work there are very friendly, if you want them to hook up your ipod to the speakers at the pool, or the restuaraunt just ask.
Note: you get a flat screen with 6 channels, but the channels are Aljazeera, RT, V television which is chinese music video channel, a Dutch channel, a Vegan channel, and something else. If you have a laptop or anything, bring a connector for the flat screen if you want to watch movies, because you'll get sick of these channels!
P.S they have free wifi, no computers, but you can a laptop for an hour for 150 baht if need be.
All in all, LOVED IT!!

First of all this hotel is literally in the middle of nowhere, between the main town and Haad Rin beach. That aside it is the perfect location for those who want to relax and only stop into the chaotic Haad Rin area.

We got the bungalow closest to the water so our large window view was of the beach and in the distance Koh Samui. The beach was empty day and night so you could actually relax. The pool was cold which was perfect for that humid heat. There was a net for beach volleyball, but it was never in use. The pool bar was shut down and being used as a stand where they did their renovation work.

The restaurant on site was surprisingly delicious. Their pasta rivals some of the better ones I've had in Italy, their sandwiches were perfect, and their Thai food was typically well made. Drinks were reasonably priced at 100 baht for large Singa (2 pints) and service was decently quick, even friendly.

Things couldn't have gotten better there..... Then they blew it. They lost all respect and my chance for what was potentially a flawless review...

It all started the night of the Full Moon party. We purchased our taxi vouchers from Gai who appeared to be the entertainment director for the hotel. These tickets were 100 baht each and got you to and from the party in your own cab (shared with other guests of this hotel). We were sitting in the lounge waiting for the 11pm taxi we pre-booked a seat on when we realized they over booked it by quite a bit. We had a great time drinking buckets of Sang Som in the lounge so we weren't too disappointed and decided to wait till the 12am taxi.

So we go back and order another bucket from Gai, who was also serving us. She was a very friendly person up till this point and even kept my wife company while I was brutally ill for the first day. We get our drink which cost 250 baht so we gave her a 500 baht bill.

She returned with 50 baht change. We told her we gave her 500 so she was short. Just to be certain my wife checked her purse to see what she gave her since we took a very specific amount to go to the Full Moon party, and sure enough she did give her 500 as we thought. Gai didn't wait before yelling at her, calling her a liar, and other very vulgar names I can't repeat on here. For the sake of 200 baht I just told her to keep it and bugger off. It wasn't worth fighting over. However, no hotel staff should ever say the things she did, or act the way she did to customers even if the customer was wrong - which wasn't the case.

We ignored it that evening and went on to have a great time at the Full Moon party.

The next day we had lunch at the hotel and this time we triple checked the amount we gave the waitress and we were short changed. Only by about 100 baht, but she returned it and apologized. That evening at dinner same thing. The following morning at breakfast, same thing. It was a constant after that first incident that whenever we paid up we should be short changed. The last evening, after getting drinks at 7/11 on multiple occasions before they stopped us and told us that we weren't allowed to drink outside drinks at the hotel. We said okay and still drank them anyway.

What I Would Do Differently:

- That staff, at least Gai, has to go. As friendly and helpful as she can be, that situation can not be tolerated.

- Do more for the pre-Full Moon party in the lounge. It is a perfect little spot, use it better.

- Open the pool bar. It would have made easily 2000 baht from us alone for the week we were there.

- Offer kayak and water sports equipment rentals. It was a perfect beach and it would have been nice to do something other than wade out into the shallow water that surrounded it.

We booked paid and recieved confirmation from this hotel through Expedia.Com only to find out 2 weeks later they had oversold the rooms and that they had nothing for us leaving us totally without any accomodation over the peak season
We are 3weeks out from our trip and accomodation on the island for the budget we had was almost all booked out! All of our travel plans would have had to have been re-arranged if we could not find a place.
The team from Expedia.com were excellent in relocating us to a more premuim resort but it has cost us more money.
I would suggest watching these guys if this is one of their methods of business and I certainly would not recomend them based on this experience

We came to Koh-phangan for the 3rd time. We wanted to take a beachfront bungalow and there was not so much choice, so we stayed in Morning Star Resort. The owners of the hotel are young Russian couple, very friendly and helpful - we received a huge amount of information about the island from them. We enjoyed the bungalow - it had a glass beachfront wall - it was spectacular!

Another thing I liked were hammocks.

The food in the restaurant was of good quality and was served 24 hours.

The hotel has its own disco - so even people from other hotels come to have fun.

Overall it was a pleasant staying and I would recommend this hotel for a romantic stay for couples.

Hi,
We stayed at Morning satr for 9 nights in Janaury. We had 2 bungalows 206/207. These had an adjoing door, perfect as we had a 16 year with us. Positive side. 206 is the only bunglaow with glass on two sides and is on the beach. so we lay in bed and watched the waves gently lap. Fridge air con new tv, no kettle and only a few channels. who cares about tv on holiday though. The place is definetley a party lovers favourite, they had their own dj on twice with a sound system that would have been ok in a cinema. Only drawback on the last night we were leaving early and speakers were about 20 foot from the door. The magaeress or owner is a blond russian woman. God is she surly, like she has lost her purse all the time, by contrast the thai girls who work there are a pleasure. Though they often forgot bits pieces with the breakfast or tried to server me solid fried eggs. We asked for a lamp in the 2nd bunglaow which never appeared and also had to ask for the rooms to be cleaned sometimes. 15 mins to Haad rin with the full moon party is in a taxi. Food is ok if not cheap. All in all we had a good stay and there can't be many bunglaows with full wall tinted windows.
