“Perfect Location, Good Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2012

We arrived at the Anantara Rasananda in Koh Phangan using their speedboat service and was welcomed by the hotel's staff and manager which were very welcoming and extremely nice.
We were then quickly shown to our Ocean Pool Suite room on the 2nd floor.
A few remarks on the room:
- The room is nice but not really spacious. According to the hotel's website the size of this type of room should be 100 sqm. well - there is no way that this is true. We just came from the Hansar Samui seaview XL room which was only 70 sqm and it was larger then this room.
- The room's pool on the balcony is practicaly unusable since the water are too cold. We read a few tips regarding this fact so we upgraded to the ocean facing suite but it didn't really matter. So we didn't get in the pool even once. (The ocean water were much warmer and nice)
- Although the room was well cleaned the cleaning staff didn't replace some of the materials in the shower (cotton wool and tissue paper) during our entire stay (5 nights).
The location of the hotel is perfect - the beach is amazing and the water are just like a warm bath. The view from the beach is also quite breath-taking and the sand (although a bit grained) is white and comfy.
A returning complaint about this hotel seems to be one of its greats caveats - the prices of everything suggested by the hotel - from the pickup service to the prices of the food and beverages in the hotel. I don't really get it - why try and squeeze your guests into paying these astronomical prices ? Do you rely on the fact that the hotel is isloated enough to charge any price you want ? or you just assume that if someone booked a room in the hotel he has enough many to splurge even when he can get the same thing for almost 1/5 the price outside the hotel. This is one of the things that this hotel should really re-think since it makes you feel like the hotel is either trying to exploit you or just think you're stupid.
Beside all of that, I still think this Hotel is good - but mainly due to its location and warm stuff, not for its facilities or price.

Room Tip: Take a room with an ocean view

“Stray dogs eating from buffet - is this really 5 star?”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2012

We spend 5 days at this beautiful resort. The greeneery is absolut perfect and it could have been paradise, but 3 points to mention:

a) most important: although it is a five star area they allow at least three stray dogs to walk around the hotel ground, these dogs come to the table and they are begging for food, they walk to the open air kitchen and they drink out of the pool. We complainend about the dogs - and the hotel blamed the guests for the situation as they are feeding the dogs and they not really tried solve it. Which in our eyes could be done - even if a five star hotel decide to allow stray dogs than they should feed them properly. Some people really liked the dogs, especially kids, but if you are not so much into dogs, we can't recommend this place.

b) the system of the daybed reservations should be explained somehow. One day we were thrown from the beds three times, either reserved to beach villa, but not shown or reserved for others, although not used for hours ... Please explain to guests

c) transfer prices to/from hotel by hotel car three times more expensive than offered in village by outside companies which are also safe and modern. Also day trip prices should be compared to offers in the village.

December 10, 2012
Dear newyorkKrefeld

Thanks you for sharing your concerns.

On the first point we sincerely regret that the local dogs had such an impact on your holiday experience. Being located on a remote but still public beach we cannot completely avoid such contact but with greater effort & explaining to guests to refrain from feeding them, we have made recent progress in keeping them away from the guest areas. Whilst "dogs feeding from the buffet" is a comical exaggeration, we do take your feedback seriously.

Much has been written previously about our sun loungers and I think most readers now understand that Ocean View rooms have a set of lounges immediately in front of the room, with a sign that shows it is reserved exclusively for guests in those rooms. Guests in non Ocean view Rooms have a large number of sets available closer to the center of the resort and staff are always happy to help explain this further if the reserved signs are confusing.

Our transfer prices reflect the standard of service provided with modern air conditioned vehicles, trained English speaking drivers and more importantly all insurance coverage. Unfortunately many guests who are lured by the cheaper prices discover that their transfer is nothing more than an open back truck style taxi crammed with luggage and other guests. As always, you do indeed get what you pay for so we do urge all guests to consider the full story when choosing any such service.

Best Regards

Mark Eletr

“Amazing attention to detail...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2012

We are staying here right now for my 40th on Tuesday. The hotel is everything you could wish for with lovely little touches like the complimentary spirits and handmade local sweets at turndown. The private pool on our terrace is genius and is surrounded by lush trees and plants.

The staff are SO attentive and we have been spoken to by the general manager and bar manager every day since we arrived to make sure we are having a good time. We are a couple but but it's a good hotel for families and friends too.

Breakfast is fresh and tasty simple things like granola have a Thai/Anantara twist and taste devine. Iron Chef Chumpol is here for the week and his food has been full of TASTE and we have enjoyed all of it including dim sum and Thai vegetables for breakfast.

We have booked spa treatments for next week and are looking forward to the pampering as the surroundings are luscious.

You get what you pay for (we are regular people like most of the guest here which is nice as you don't get those looks from people thinking "did you win a free trip") we tried the restaurant next door and were very disappointed with the tasteless food and the price compared to Anantara was only £27 difference!

When we arrived we thought we wanted a room directly onto the beach however our pool suite is quiet secluded and perfect.

Room Tip: Rooms to the back of the resort have more greenery and are quiet however the hotel in general is ver...

“Amazing hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2012

My boyfriend and I travelled to this hotel in early September and stayed for 5 days. The hotel was stunning and we were upgraded from a garden pool suite to a Garden Pool Villa - amazing upgrade. Room was huge with possibly the largest bed I have ever seen. We had our own hammock and outdoor shower along with the private pool, which I loved but was a tad cold! Lovely place to sit and read a book. The free spirits in the room were an amazing bonus, but cheaper to buy mixers from the shop that from the minibar.
The hotel is very popular with honeymooners which I was a bit concerned that there would be overwelming PDAs and shinny wedding rings, although we were just on a very nice holiday but this is not something that was flaunted.
The speed boat overto the island was a bit of a wait, which we were not expecting but was great fun.
The resturants in the local village were lovely and a bargain. The hotel resturant although very nice was far more expencive than the local village. We ate there once, which was enough. If you were celebrating it would be perfect.
There is an amazing massage place called taraporn (interesting name!) in the village and renting a moped to see the island was well worth the £4 cost!
Both my other half and I have never stayed anywhere so beautiful and plush!

“Lovely place - but stray dogs impact the experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

Beautiful location. Great beach.

We had a super room - with private daybed, jacuzzi bath, outdoor shower and our own little bit of beach. We had a powerful aircon unit, and a mosquito net over the comfortable bed, so all the boxes were ticked.

The staff are fantastic. Laid back and friendly, but they get the job done well.

The food in the restaurant is of a very high quality. In addition, there are other very good (and less expensive) dining options nearby, so you have plenty of choice. Betterthansex is a great little place in the village, and the beach club next door to the hotel wasn't bad.

A nice touch: The rooms have Apple TVs in them, so you can AirPlay music and movies from your iPad if the weather turns miserable.

Our only disappointment was the number of big stray dogs running around. Having them dig a hole in the sand and lie down next to us on the beach was a little annoying, but having them sit right at our table in the restaurant was downright unpleasant and certainly detracted from the "luxuriousness" of the experience.
