“Relaxed resort, nice service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2012

We really liked staying here, we had a bungalow with seaview with a stunning beachview and a hammock. The bungalow was also quite tidy although never leave any food in your room, because the place fills up with ants in no time! Service at the resort restaurant was very friendly, the food was fine and I would definatly recommend their smoothies, which are very delicious! You can also borrow DVD's for free (every room has a TV + DVD player), but we only figured that out on our last days of our stay :)
The resort is kind of half up the mountain, so you have to walk a bit up and down the stairs, but the view from the rooms is absolutely worth it!

Room Tip: Seaview hut, try to get the one right above the restaurant, then you don't have to walk that muc...

We didn't stay in the rooms, as we had booked another resort but came to Cookies everyday for lunch and dinner and often breakfast, and used the facilities. From glimpses we caught of the rooms, they looked beautiful. We are just booking to come and stay here in September when I saw their reviews and felt we should say that we thought the people that run the place were amazing, friendly as can be and they worked tirelessly looking after the place and guests impeccably. The breakfast was amazing value. We thought all the food was fantastic. The atmosphere is lovely and place is beautiful. I guess if you come in high season, you can expect noisy kids anywhere. Go in low season to avoid that..... Also, if you don't want to wait for your food, go in quiet season. These guys do an amazing job. I work in a similar industry and know it is hard to provide perfect service to everyone all the time but I think they've got as good a chance of offering that as anywhere else in the world. We love Cookies!

My boyfriend and I spend 12 nights at Cookies this August, and we sooo fell in love with the place! We had room no. 14 and highly recommend it - the view is absolutely stunning and breathtaking!

The place has it's faults, but none that effected our stay in any way.

The service at Cookies is great - not flawless, but great! The staff are always smiling and ready to help. Sometimes they missed an order or two, but it really wasn't a problem - we're on holiday right? No rush and no worries :)
The restaurant was probably the nicest we saw on the island (and we did get around a lot) - the atmosphere is so relaxed and we really enjoyed spending time there in the evenings having a beer or one of the great smoothies! The food is also pretty good, although we did enjoy the food at Salad Hut about halfway down the beach a little more :)
Breakfast at Cookies is okay.

We only saw our own room (14), but I can only recommend it! It was spacious, clean (never saw a bug there other than a few ants now and then), the bed was big and comfortable, the bathroom really nice and the rainshower was really good! We could have used a few more shelves and storage for clothes since we spend so many nights and had a lot of clothes with us, but it worked out just fine anyways.
The balcony is... not to be described in words. We just loved sitting out there in the mornings, watching the sun come up over the mountains - so beautiful. And later in the day, we would sit and watch the bay as the water came all the way up. When the dark came, we loved the view of all the restaurants and their lights.

Cookies is located on a pretty steep hill and that means you have to climb a little to get to your room, depending on what room you get. We had the one with the hardest climb I think, because there was also a steep climb of stairs after the hill - but honestly, you really have to be in the worst shape possible to consider this a problem! I smoke and is not in good shape at all, but the climb was not too much. Sure it had our hearts pounding a little harder, but it can hardly be categorized as a workout ;)
The beach is a lot better than I expected. Right next to Cookies it wasn't really that good, but we just walked a 100 meters longer and then it was beautiful.
Water is pretty shallow in the morning and up until 2-3 pm. but then it's just fine for swimming and snorkling. At least this was the deal in the beginning of august, but actually the water came in earlier every day...

We rented a motorbike at Cookies, and even though the roads aren't exactly good, they're okay if you're just carefull. It worked out fine for us and we haven't been on a bike in like 10 years ;)

The thing with Cookies is... It's got soul. You can't buy that for money. So the little problems, the little faults and the ocationally forgotten orders, just doesn't matter. Not to us anyways - we came there to relax, and have a good time, and that's what we got.

we traditionally visit thailand once a year for a two-week islands vacation, and being aware of the high season crowds we tried this hotel due to a little remote location of the island, hoping that we would avoid noise in the hotel and lengthy waiting time in restaurants. honestly, the rule in thailand is the more remote is the location, the worse service you get, unfortunately. it was quite expensive for this type of hotel also. i wouldn't chose this hotel again.

{We stayed in the "panorama room" (Room 14), their 2nd most expensive room.}

Here are ten KEY categories/reasons to help us review this place...

1- The RESTAURANT.
-The food: 3/10.
-The service efficiency: 6/10.
-Friendliness: 7/10.
-Breakfast: 2/10.
-Atmosphere: 9/10.
*Summary: The restaurant staff are all Burmese, so they can't cook Thai food (or any other food very well for that matter). The breakfasts are - frankly- pathetic. For example: the breakfasts have triangle sandwiches with ham and ketchup, poorly picked fruit, pre-fried eggs (stacked 20 high!), bad bread with preservatives, cheap honey, and nothing freshly prepared. Of our 6 nights, we ate there 3 mornings - choosing instead to take a 15 minutes moped ride to Chalokum to "The World's End" for amazing burritos, great service, and EGGS Benedict.
The atmosphere in the evening at the restaurant is very good, but lots of kids.

2- The BEACH.
-Immediate beach: 4/10.
-Beach 3-400m away: 9/10.
-Timing: 4/10: Can only swim in the sea from about 3pm due to low tide (July).
*Summary: There are many many rocks (you can't walk shoeless) 100 meters from Cookies. But, further down the beach, it's great.

3- The SERVICE.
-6/10.
Frankly, they're understaffed when they have a full house. Also, you won't feel at all special (they don't have the time). They will robotically repeat the word "ka" after everything and you feel it's just systematic respect rather than anything genuine.

4- The HILL / HEIGHT.
-5/10.
It's not very comfortable, but it's alright.

5- the ROOM.
- Cleanliness: 5/10: 2 cockroaches which we had to kill ourselves... aside from cockroaches, 8/10.
- Furniture: 7/10. bit basic (not enough place for your clothes).
- Bathroom: 5/10. dim bathroom lighting, clean enough. Bad for shaving or "doing hair" for the ladies.
- Balcony: 7/10. Can't really tan or get sun on the balconies.
- Bed Pillows: 2/10. Horrible - thin and hard.
- Bed: 6/10. Good cover and ok mattress (hard).
*Summary: Our room had a bathtub (!) on on the balcony which was novel and interesting... but not private enough and only enough hot water for 2/3 filling.

6- the LOCATION.
- For restaurants: 8/10.. there are many (better!!!) options on the beach - like 10-12.
- For mopeds: 8/10. It's a very steep hill, but you can get there (they're building a new ashphalt road).

7- MANAGEMENT
- Hands on: 4/10.
- Billing: 9/10.
- Pickup and drop-off : 8/10.
- Reactivity: 3/10.
*Summary: Again, they're very very stressed and don't seem to be in the hospitality industry - it's more business (think a production line conveyor belt of foreigners) and complete disconnection. They managed by "reacting" and never by anything "pro-active".

8- the POOL
- Quiet: 1/10.
- Peace: 1/10.
- Romance: 2/10.
*Summary: It's a crazy kindergarten with absolutely NO evidence of any staff presence to calm the situation down. Kids absolutely everywhere and very very loud.

9- SERVICES PROVIDED.
- Variety: 3/10.
*Summary: On the beach, there are two great massage places (7$USD for oil massages!), and some adventure places to do things. They're all significantly cheaper than anything offered at cookies. Just go for a walk.

10- Internet / TV.
- TV channels: 3/10. One English news (CNN!), and 2-3 movie channels only.
- Internet: 3/10. There is only internet in the restaurant area which is clearly a way to get people to use the restaurant and hang around there. When we were there, approx 20 people were always in the resto area (6-7 kids), with 5-6 people on iphones or crackwhatever devices. The restaurant is bad, but at least this way it keeps people buying drinks.

TOTAL SUMMARY:
The rooms are pretty good (if you accept a few bugs), but you won't feel very close to the water because the pool is a detracting and uncensored zoo of infants, and the closest part of the sea is either too rocky or too loud (you can still hear the kids from cookies). The restaurant is ok for drinks or one night of fried fish or corn, but for breakfast is's just petrol--- nothing for the senses. Altogether, it managed with too few people who have an extreme disconnection from their Burmese restaurant staff and you can see it everywhere because th managers are only interested in their financial priorities and only reaction to people's requests and never ever pro-actively anticipating any of the needs or interests. ps: kids are cool, but not all the time.

Room Tip: Low, rooms must be low.

Overall, the resort itself is good. It's a little pricey for Koh Phangan but the view from the oversea view cottages is fantastic, and the staff will help you out with whatever you need. We stayed 11 nights and although the first 2 were wonderful and peaceful and just what we wanted, the rest of the time the place was overrun by kids. The pool was full the majority of the time and as no parents or staff were supervising, there was dive bombing galore, which was annoying, noisy and dangerous. Non-guests are also allowed access so there is no chance for a swim. As Haad Salad beach is not good for swimming, this was disappointing. We had to ask someone's kids to stop yelling from the top of the hill down to the beach. Also, there really isn't room to accommodate everyone at breakfast. This is our third visit to Koh Phangan and although we liked Cookies to begin with, we wouldn't choose to go back there because of the holiday camp atmosphere.

Room Tip: Great view from Oversea View Cottage No 11

Second time we have stayed here in two years. Great place to stay - Aom (the owner) is amazing as are all the staff. Last year we stayed up the hill and enjoyed the steps as it kept our fitness up (shame on those who have critisied having to walk up steps...) and the view was amazing. This year we stayed in 2 rooms on the sea level - both great.
We have tried many other places on Koh Phangan and keep comong back to Cookies. This trip we stayed at another resort on Koh Chao Prao based on Trip Advisor reviews and although nice was extremely quiet so we came back to Cookies. A very kid friendly place - lots of fun and kids around which is what we want.
Thanks Aom and all the staff. See you next year!!!

Room Tip: The new rooms on sea level are beautiful and big enough for families.
