Every year I get back from my travels and promise to make an entry in Trip Advisor but never get around, but this time I've got to tell you all about a 10 out of 10 experience! Hidden at the end of Klong Doa Beach in Koh Lanta Thailand is Kaw Kwang Beach Resort. The place and staff are amazing. We came when we saw a lovely picture in a travel book (which we later found out was taken before the Tsunami) and found a beautiul and newly built resort of 60 odd beach bungalows with prices to meet any budget, from the backpacker "Cozy Hill" bungalows to romantic private "Modern Beach Front" bungalows. It's a 10 to 60 second walk from your front door to the beach!
The beach is white sand and stretches out 2.7 kilometers (my wife has a runners watch that measures distance), so perfect for a morning jog or walk as the sun rises - it's stunning, watching the local fishermen prepare their nets and head out on their long tail boats each morning. Kaw Kwang is the last resort at the quiet end of the beach and because of the beach's curve and the hillside, the water is shallow and still for the firsts 100 yards (depending on the tide) and just a little further out is a reef with hundreds of fish (including Nemo in his Anenomie and a little octopus) perfect for snorking for adults and kids.
Most of the rooms have air conditioning (the cheapest rooms have large ceiling fans), satellite TV, fridge with minbar, ensuite shower and toilet. The friendly cleaning staff change linen daily at convenient times and always had a smile and a "good morning" for us. The infinity pool is lush, over looking the beach with it's own waterfall and jaccuzi area. It's only a few steps to the shaded restaraunt area where you can get free unlimited Wi-Fi and fresh beach towels daily or better still, it's 10 steps to the massage hut where the girls offer traditional Thai as well as a range of oil, head and foot massages.
Its a 10 minute walk down the beach or a 5 minute Tuc Tuc ride into Saladan town for the nightlife and alterantive restaurants (for the tastiest and best price traditional Thai meals just ask the drive to take you to Oii's resturant - the food is unbelievable!).
The only negative I can think of is the 2 hour journey time from airport to resort, but this was in their air-conditioned minibus and being so far out is probably why it's still pretty unknown, quiet and delightful. Would I recomend Kaw Kwnag to friends? I've already organised next years trip with my sisters and my brother and his young family. We're going to have a ball.
