“Unpleasant stuff, rundown bungalow”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2008

I have stayed at this resort for three nights, a rather unpleasant experience.
The stuff was bored, not a smile, a friendly gesture, only from the old kitghen help, nice lady.
The water of the pool was so overdosed with chlorine, it was impossible to see the bottom, it stank.
The room was OK, the furniture run down, the location itself rather mediocer.
The beach is not enjoyable from the afternoon, at low tide, it is rocky, shallow!
Not recommended!

Terrible place, dirty rooms, blase, indifferent and blatantly rude staff. Nothing good to say about it, other than that it has a nice bar (which is not part of the hotel it is just right next to it). Dont trust the man that works in the supposed 'tourist information centre' there, he tells you that lovely resorts are terrible and are fully booked when they are not, and he directs you to resorts owned by his friends. I was told by a local there that there is a religious divide out in Koh Lanta and that people tend to 'stick together' this being one of the reasons that they are untruthful about certain resorts owned or run by people of other religions to themselves. Whether the religion aspect is true or not, i found out for sure that I was being told lies by people about fully booked resorts so dont believe anyone and go and check for yourself.

Like other reviewers of this hotel I also got duped into pre-booking as Koh Lanta was very busy - so the agents in Ao Nang assured me anyway....another scam! The hotel staff were rude and very blase about having guests at all - as if we were incidental to their lives. The rooms were ok, but certainly not for the price we paid for them. When you see comparable accomodation on the island then you either cry or laugh - we chose to laugh! Shocking place - to be avoided.

We had a horrible experience when we stayed here in December. Since it was over Christmas, I wanted to have a reservation for Koh Lanta, and so I pre-paid for $85 (US) per night thinking that we would splurge for Christmas. Big mistake!

When we checked in at 9pm, they were not prepared for three adults, and they made jokes about one person having to sleep on the floor. We waited in the lobby, and after about 30 minutes, we watched them walk a mattress wrapped in plastic into our room.

Once we got into the room (which was tiny), we found a spider larger than my hand that ran around the room until he disappeared behind the A/C. He later appeared in the bathroom at night along with a 2 inch cockroach and geckos (there were no screens on the bathroom window.)

We were also put into the room closest to the bar. Before we unpacked, I asked that we be moved to another room, since we’re not late night people, and at 10pm, the music was really loud. We were told that they were full and that maybe we could move tomorrow. I then asked until what time the music played, and they assured us around 12 or 1. It played until 3:30am!!! The next day we asked to be moved again, and we were told they were full, and again the music played until 3:30am. After no sleep for two nights, we cut our losses and moved to another hotel.

When I talked to the staff about our frustrations, they were rude and dismissive. They just kept saying that it was a Christmas party for the staff (which ran for 4 days!), but what about the guests that payed a lot of money to stay there?!? They would not consider refunding the two nights that we were canceling (even though every day, we saw people asking if they had availability), or even discounting our food and beverage tab (instead they made us wait an hour to be able to pay it bc their credit card machine was down).

I understand that insects and broken credit card machines are pretty common while traveling in Thailand, but the unbelievably loud music (which also ran all day), the exorbitant pricing, and RUDE staff all made this the worst hotel experience that I’ve EVER had.

The Lanta Riviera Bungalows are on Klong Khong Beach. It is pretty quiet on this part of the island, and the hotels in general here are rugged, offering minimal accomodations. The rooms at the Rivera are spartan, but the air conditioning worked well. This is very important as it is Very Hot and humid during the day. The pool is always cloudy, and the food at the restaurant is not too good. The Riviera hotel common area is pleasant, with many tables and chairs overlooking the sea, along with a couple of lounge chairs on the beach. The bar is quiet, but pleasant. The staff are really friendly, although most speak very minimal English. The best English we found everywhere, not just our hotel, was among the bar and restaurant servers, likely because they have to use it the most.

The rooms: The Lanta Riviera has sparse rooms, and despite multiple assurances that we would have a room with two beds, when we arrived, they gave us a room with one bed, claiming none were available with two. It took half a day of prompting to get moved to a second room where there were supposed to be two beds; however, when we moved there, there was again only one bed. After more long debates with the hotel staff, they were finally able to find another bed and move it into the room. After we moved in, we realized that the new room had no "mini bar". The mini bar was actually a small refridgerator with six sodas in it, so we had planned to use it to keep water and other items cooled. Again, more debates and prompting and the hotel staff finally agreed to move the mini bar to our room. This place finally did give us the accomodation that we had asked for initially, but it took half a day of our two days on Koh Lanta to get it worked out. In summary, it helps to be patient and just keep showing one's receipt for what one ordered, and eventually the hotel will comply.

The ambiance. Koh Lanta has lots of European guests, and the place is sometimes called "Swedish Islands", so expect lots of Swedes. Most of the guests could speak enough English to communicate, and that was very helpful. Koh Lanta is very quiet. The beach at Klong Khong is very quiet, and has some good swimming when the tide is in, but lots of rocks, so travelers should bring swimming booties to protect feet. When the tide is out, there are many rocks, and the swimming is not so good. However, there is some interesting sea life as a result of the rocks. The snorkling was not great--only a few interesting fish. It seems that most of the "rocks" were part of coral formations some time ago that have all died. There are an abundance of sand crabs and hermit crabs that are fun to watch.

The food at the hotel was not so great. We found a great place down the beach called Coco Blue. The chef there does the local cooking classes, and made our best meal on the island. The local fish was good.
