“Not recommended”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2013

The good: Very nice people at the front desk, good location, wifi

The bad: The room. Mattress cover on my bed was worn and had large stains on it. There was exposed electrical wiring where there used to be a bedside light. The floor was torn in places and repaired with tape. The shower was right over the toilet. The windows did not close nor open completely. There were mosquitoes, about two dozen flying ants and I saw one very large cockroach crawling through the hole in my bathroom floor. I do not recommend this place, for the price you can get much better rooms in the same location.

First of all, thank you very much for your review. It is kind of mirror that I could see how I should improve this guesthouse. We are listening to you and taking response immediately.

The room is now up to date. Floor mat and electric plug were fixed. the mattress was changed. Our hotel is an wooden old fashion house which require a lot of maintenance. However, it is cooler than staying in the building.

Mosquitoes and other bugs is sometime could be found if the door is not shut properly since we are in tropical Thailand. However, mosquitoes net is provided.

I wish all guests understand and send all love to all being in this world. Thank you!

Me and my boyfriend arrived on lanta looking for a quiet and peaceful week or so to chill out on the beaches. Lanta lantern was the epitome of chilled! The front is an opened out veranda/deck/bar/shisha mix with lots of pretty lanterns and lights and relaxing music. The second we arrived, Fan greeted us warming and we soon came to realise she is absolutely lovely and so full of knowledge about the island and is willing to help you with anything. Our room was a standard fan room and I admit it was not pleasant to come in from the heat outside to a room that was even hotter but that is no reflection on the room, just our budget! The ONLY downside to our room is that it had the water pump right outside the window which we had to leave open due to heat by they filled the water pump at 11pm every night and made a lot of noise while doing so! Quite annoying but I guess it's something they had to do. If possible, don't stay in room 4! The rooms are basic, 2 towels, double bed, basic bathroom with a basic cold shower (just what you need in the heat) and a mirror. The room was small but sufficient for the time we spent in there. Other guests were equally pleasant and quiet and no question was too small for Fan and the other owners. I can't praise this guesthouse enough, I totally fell in love. We only booked 3 nights and ended up staying 8! It's on stilts over the sea and you fall asleep listening to the waves! Bliss.

Lanta Lantern

Great location for backpackers, or other open-minded budget travelers

We stayed on Koh Lanta for 15 days. One reason for extending our stay on Koh Lanta was to opportunity to have accommodation at Lanta Lantern (LL). We stayed during our entire time on Koh Lanta twice in Lanta Lantern. Our decision to book a room there again was our very positive opinion about LL. The positive observations (advantages) were in our view as follows:

+ Price: without a doubt LL is fairly inexpensive, for a spacious AC room with a king sized bed and warm water you pay approx.. 20 €. If you do not mind a queen sized bed and cold water, you can have even a room for a discounted price of 16 €. However, the latter option requires a long-term stay. Fan rooms might cost even less.

+ Location: true, LL is not located at the beach as so many Bungalow resorts. Nonetheless, during our stay we stayed in two middle-class bungalow resorts with only some meters close to the beach. We realized that Bungalows are only worth the high price if you intend to stay on the beach for the major portion of your time. However, if you want to have access to the hot spot for shopping, diving, and dining, then you will be better off with LL as the guest house is located at the pier of Koh Lanta. Note that LL itself is located at the very beginning of the pier, thus it is at the same time very quiet there too.

+ LL chill out area: what we liked the most about LL was their charming chill out area. After a long day we were glad to stay there and have a cold beer while listening to chill out house music and having a cold beer, or a cocktail/fruit shake.

+ LL owners: LL is owned by a young woman (her name is Faan) and a young man as we understood it. They are not only open-minded, extrovert and possess a very entrepreneurial attitude (in a positive way though), but they are both also very helpful. One time the guest house ran out of water as it is not connected the groundwater system of the Island. We were the first to notice this circumstance late in the evening. When we informed Faan about this she tried hard to order new water right away and succeeded in persuading the water supplier to refill the tanks even after 10 PM. We found that quite impressive. You have to note that we traveled quite a long time through Vietnam, Cambodia, Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and the Philipinnes and we are quite sure that many other guest houses within this price range would probably act upon this situation not earlier than in the morning of the next day.

Nonetheless, we noticed also some things which could be improved in the future.

- We had the feeling that drinks and food prices at LL could be somewhat lower. We understand that a low priced guest house chooses premium prices for their food and drinks to cover their costs whenever possible. Nonetheless, we were quite often unwilling to pay 80-100 BHT for simple food when you know that similar food is offered in a kitchen stall for half the money. This is especially important when considering that LL attracts mostly price-sensitive guests.

- It would have been nice when LL staff had cleaned our room every second day or so, although they would probably do so upon request, it simply feels nicer as a guest if you do not have to ask for this standard service

- Unfortunately we were attacked by mosquitoes during the night even though we kept our doors and windows always closed. Admittedly, we could have used the room’s mosquito net, however the smell of it was unbearable. The nets are probably quite old, thus an exchange of this equipment might be beneficial for the future.

Still, if you consider the price you are paying these three weaknesses of LL seem like complaints on a very high level. Some travelers probably would not even mind these things anyway. If we ever come back to Koh Lanta, we will definitely book our rooms there again. If we could, we would even nominate this guesthouse for the traveler’s choice of 2013.

The rooms are basic but good enough for the price. It's close to the pier and the service is warm and welcoming. It has a lovely atmosphere, great food, good chill out area and would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a charming little spot to rest. It has only 7 rooms and they were fully booked when others tried to get a room so worth booking in advance.

We arrived on Koh Lanta not having booked anywhere, and Lanta Lantern was pretty much the first place we came across walking into town from the ferry pier (which is only a couple of minutes down the street). We're two guys travelling together (but no, not a couple!), so we're generally looking for twin rooms, which Lanta Lantern don't have. But the double rooms were so cheap (when we were there, 500 baht each for the fan rooms, more for air conditioning), and the place looked welcoming, so we just took one each.

The rooms were basic but comfortable. They have big beds, and each room has an en suite -- the en suites are very basic and could use some work, certainly, but they were fine for us. There are better things to do on Koh Lanta than marvel in the decor of a shiny marble bathroom! There seemed to be some problems with the water a couple of times (air in the pipes, or some other problem getting decent flow out of the taps) -- for all I know, that might be a general problem with the water supply on Koh Lanta, though, and it wasn't an issue for me, so I didn't bother to ask.

My room had a little bit of noise overnight from a water pump (I think) and what sounded like next door's air conditioning -- I suppose that could be a problem for some, but it certainly wasn't loud enough to keep me awake, and my friend tells me his room didn't have any significant noise during the night.

The common area out the front is a nice touch: a sort of half-room half-verandah open to the street where you can sit and chat and enjoy a quiet drink or read a book or just lounge and relax. Fun (I have no idea if that's how to spell her name, I'm sorry!) was very friendly and a pleasure to chat to, and she had some very helpful advice for us as we were planning what to do on the island. She also makes a great -- and particularly reasonably priced -- breakfast, and good coffee as well.

The location is convenient, too -- especially for the ferry. But bear in mind also that a lot of places on Koh Lanta are not actually in Saladan, so aren't as convenient for organising diving or for restaurants or for hiring scooters or whatever else. (A friend of ours discovered after he arrived that the place he'd booked was actually several kilometres out of town, and ended up relocating the next day to somewhere more central!) Lanta Lantern is in a handy spot for all those things, while not being in the centre of town, so being a little away from the bustle in the evenings.

We were only on Koh Lanta for two nights, but would happily have stayed for longer in Lanta Lantern -- we really enjoyed our time there, and would definitely go back.

Room Tip: Don't fret too much if there aren't any air-conditioned rooms left. The large ceiling fan i...

We originally stayed to the south of the island on Katiang bay which was beautiful but after a moped crash we moved to the town to be nearer the hospital and found Lanta Lantern. I was in need of some where to rest for a week or so and Lanta Lantern was the best place for this, it has a great lounge communal area where you can sit reading or having a drink etc. We had a lovely little room which was clean and comfortable. As for the owner i cannot explain how greatful we were to meet such fantasticly welcoming and caring people who completly looked after me from day one until we left 14 nights later! It was not a great start to our 5months travels having a nasty moped crash but thank fully the owner Fun and Pong and amazing Jill the french bull dog helped me stay positive, helped me get the right medical care lent us anything we needed, called taxis hospitals, tuktuks, you name it! The funniest thai man you will ever meet 'Pong' kept me entertained day and night with numerous fancy dress outfits, awesome fire shows and just generally being good fun. 'Fun' looked after us, made sure our room was cleaned everyday even if we didnt think it needed it!, made great banana shakes and breakfast and was just the most helpful host ever, both Fun and Pong had great english. Jill the fench bulldog was also great company. The evenings were great in Lanta Lantern with Pongs fireshow and shisha pipes if thats your thing. Although not a party place Lanta lantern was a great place to meet people in a fab atmosphere.
Although it was not in ideal situations, had i not had a crash we maybe wouldn't of stayed at lantern so in a weird way im glad i did as we not only met two of the nicest people we came across in thailand we think we have made some friends who we hope to visit again in the future! So when you arrive off the boat at the pier don't be too quick to walk past Lanta Lantern as it is one of the first
guesthouses from the pier.stop. and talk to Fun and Pong and im sure you will love your stay here! also there are a few lovely restaurants called Catfish and The old house on the same street.
