“Koh Lanta's best kept secret”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2011

Escape Cabins consists of 6 well maintained cabins in green gardens just off the main road about 3 clicks from the ferry port. We stayed in a Comfort Cabin which, was, as its name suggests, one of the most comfortable and spacious accommodations that we have stayed in around Thailand.

We had everything we could wish for in our room, air con, kettle, fridge, TV, DVD player and the most comfortable queen size bed that we have ever slept in. The best thing for us was the free Wi-Fi, we had an excellent fast connection which was important for us. The beach scene doesn't really happen in low season in Koh Lanta which is no big deal because Escape has a pool. It was lovely to come back after a day out and about exploring and take a refeshing dip before retiring on our terrace . There is a great Thai restaurant across the road at the entrance to Escape and also The Tavern where you can get western food. The store next door was also very handy.

What really sets Escape Cabins apart from the rest though, is the owner Kuko, who couldn't do enough to help us; she did our laundry, organising bike hire and gave us some useful travel information. My advice is, if you want to stay here in high season, then book as far in advance as you can. Escape is a haven in paradise and we will definitely be back.

Room Tip: All rooms are good but if you want extra special book The Cottage

We booked our room after getting a bargain on Agoda for our first 3 nights on Koh Lanta. Lovely and quiet, away from the main strip, good comfortable bed, fab shower and a/c...although it did get a bit hot when we turned this off. at night The coolness of the pool was a welcome change after a day on the beach. Although lots of information for new arrivals in the reception area, a welcome pack as suggested by others could prove useful.

My partner and I were dropped off at the top of a dirt path and straight away the sign to Escape Cabins was a little confusing as it isn't placed at the entrance of the correct path. As we walked down the path we eventually realised that we had passed the Escape Cabins as there was no sign fot the turn off but we did ask a local who gave us directions. Once you arrive at the cabins there is a sign at the entrance but is would have been more helpful on the path in. Also just to warn you the winding path is full of pot holes and is pitch black at night, either some lights need to be installed or the owner should look at providing torches for the guests. The owner was away during our nine day stay here so when we checked in we were greeted by Nex, a friendly guy who showed us our cabin and mumbled something about no internet. The website says that you can borrow a computer during your stay but it turns out that there wasn't one available, there was a laptop in the reception area but that was for the staff. Our room was decorated tastefully but was in desperate need of a touch up with paint here and there and the room itself was filthy, absolutely full of dust and the bathroom tiles had suspicious brown stains on some of them which I wiped clean - yuk! The room was extremely hot when we arrived, there is no air ventillation in the bathroom so we had to keep our air con on constantly even when we were not in the room by leaving our key inside the electric activator - in fairness the aircon in the Cozy cabin is not powerful enough for the space and it feels a bit like a sweat box unfortunately. After checking in we decided to head out to the small pool, the pool is deceptive as it has a ladder so looks deeper than it is, it is just over waist deep at the deepest part and really needs signs to say no diving or at least how shallow it is so no one dives in and gets hurt. There are a handfull of cottages/cabins and weirdly only two sunloungers which were taken when we arrived and we didn't fancy sunbathing on the slope of grass as there were several cat/dog poos all over the grass right next to the pool so we asked if we could borrow the two sunloungers outside the staff accomodation which the cleaner very kindly arranged for us. It does seem strange that the staff have as many sunloungers as the whole of the cabins put together - strange priorities that the staff have better facilities than the guests?! On day one we were provided with a mini bar of soap each but the rest of the eight days we were not given any more soap and some days no toilet paper either, I find it really annoying that we get better service if stayed just the one night rather than being loyal and staying for more - we would of moved hotels if it were not for the fact that we had already payed for nine nights in full. Our towels were changed every four/five days and after six days of being there we eventually got fresh bedding. I can't work out if the old saying 'whilst the cats away the mice will play' or if this is the normal standard? Judging by past reviews I think this is the standard. It would also be helpful if there was a sign to put on the door for the cleaner to 'make up my room' rather than her loitering around all day waiting for the best time to go in your room. During the first nights sleep we were attacked by ants in our bed, in fact they were all over the roome everyday even though we never left crumbs of food out etc, there are lots of spider webs in the room and generally it needs a deep clean. The nine nights that we stayed there was a storm most nights and after a couple of days the pool was filthy and never cleaned out so eventually it had a thick layer of scum all over the water, on our last day there Nex told us that the filter had broken so that is why the pool is so dirty... could they not get it fixed???? Without the pool there is nothing to do, apparently the beach is ten minutes away but there is no clear path to get there so we ended up walking through another hotel to get there and the beach is FILTHY, there is rubbish all over the beach and no one wants to clean it. We spoke to a local guy who was staying in the Comfortable Cabin and he said that the rubbish comes from another Island so noone wants to clean it up as it is not their responsibilty... without a clean pool or a nice beach there is NOTHING to do in Koh Lanta so I would suggest staying elsewhere... if your heart is set on Koh Lanta then try The Blue Anderman in Koh Lanta is cheaper and by the sea with a big clean pool so try there! I evetually did get the internet after three days of staying there and had to put a 3000 deposit down which was fine but the internet is extremely slow. It was a nice touch to have a dvd player in our room but I wish that the dvd's were treated better by other guests. Also we got a bottle of water in our room each day which was appreciated. I think a helpful tip would be a welcome pack for guests as we had no idea about check out time, how much laundry costs and local facilities etc... Not what we had hoped for after reading other reviews unfortunately and cheaper deals on the island!!!!!!

We had a very good price here, 400-450bht as negotiated during low season. Sure they could charge a lot more. Incredibly clean and the pool is very nice.
I would recommend that you don't book any of your trips thru the guesthouse though, we were overcharged for bus ride to krabi, told that we were on the executive bus But it was same as the usual one. And we checked with others on the bus. Shame really as we enjoyed ourselves apart from that.

the service at escape was great. yuko, the owner, is super on top of it. she helped us book a driver to take us around the island as well as to krabi/ao nang (if you get Touk, he is an excellent guide), as well as the minivan to trang. she was always available for questions, which is really helpful. we stayed at escape for 4 nights. the room we had (COMFORT) was very clean and it had a nice view of the pool. it had cable tv and a dvd player. there is also a little porch that you can hang out on. escape was a little haven in ko lanta for us. we loved having a pool to return to everyday. although escape was a 8 min walk to the beach, during the low season, the beach is very dirty and the waves are huge. no one really hangs out on the beach at this time. we stumbled upon 1 bar that was open on the beach, and only 2 tables were occupied. most of the other bars are closed. there was not much to do. ferries and diving/snokelling options are not really available during this period.

the breakfast options near escape were a little limiting if you are not into the typical western breakfasts. there are 2 places to get western b'fast, one being The Tavern (good food), which is a few doors down the street from escape. if you are willing to explore, there are more local thai options around a 15 min walk away (north). great fried chicken, noodles with curry, local coffee all within walking distance.

its also not a bad idea to rent a bike or motorcycle if you can. we didn't because i was afraid to ride one but we also walked a lot and took day trips with a driver. we will definitely stay at escape again, perhaps during high season when there's more to do and better transportation options in and out of lanta.

After a hassled journey it was nice to find somewhere quiet and relaxing.

As it was low season we found the local area too quiet, we were the only people on the beach and not many places to eat.

The rooms are a good size, swimming pool very good.

Negatives, for an island that has so many powercuts I would expect the hotel to have some torches or even candles. Nothing was provided for anyone during a 3 hour blackout.

We purchased candles at a local shop for 7thb.

Overall staff very good.

We stayed at Escape Cabins for 4 nights in the Cozy Bungalow and really enjoyed it.
There are only 6 bungalows on site so the pool is an adequate size, the sea is not swimmable at this time of year so make sure you get somewhere with a pool!
Koh Lanta is extremely quiet at this time of year and it was hard to find a lot open, it is great if you want something completely different from Samui or Phuket.
There are books and DVDs at reception, so we took the time to chill.
The only problem we had was the aircon was not very strong!
