I was on a 17-day road trip that stared from Kochi ( Ernakulum) and ended in Chennai. Scheduled stops were, Munnar, Tekkady, Madurai, Rameswaram, Dhanush Kodi, Nagapatinum (beach) Pondicherry (Arvindo Ashram),Tiruvanamalai (Ramana Maharishi's ashram),Sri Puram - Vellore (Golden Temple) and Chennai.
Vailankanni was not on the list. As usual, unscheduled stops sometimes become the most wonderful. This was true in this case. To visit this Shrine became a more rewarding and more satisfying experience especially after a terribly disappointing visit to Rameswaram.
In contrast to Rameswaram, the town is much more "organized" and cleaner. And the Shrine itself is simply wonderful. One another big contrast: there are no shops or commercial enterprise inside the Shrine as opposed to what I found in Rameswaram.
There is a CHURCH CANTEEN - with reasonable prices to eat GOOD FOOD and a variety of food. Again, I had hard time find a good eating place in Rameswaram. ( I am a vegetarian )
The structure (building) is simply beautiful, and modern.
Even to browse the "market" was much more interesting and pleasant experience than what I found in Rameswaram.
DEFINATELY a place to visit whether you are religious or not. ( I am not ).
