“Mediocrity hugely overpriced due to "Trip Advisor Syndrome"”

After reading the rave reviews on tripadvisor, we didn't know whether to choose this slightly less exciting hotel right in "downtown" Mamallapuram, or the Ideal a few kilometers outside of the mess of a village. I must say that by going to the Sea Breeze, I am not convinced we made the right choice. Perhaps due to the rave reviews, the price is completely absurd given the very low quality of the rooms and facilities. The room itself was passable, but the bathroom was pretty disgusting with a window that did not close all the way and had no screen, meaning mozzies galore at night. Of course they provide no mosquito net, or even a hook.

The other huge problem is that the electricity stopped working CONSTANTLY. And that of course means no A/C for long, torturous periods of time and a totally useless refrigerator. The grounds in general are very poorly kept, with gardens that are all dug up and disorganized. It was all kind of a mess and you could see piles of junk lying around at random all over. The breakfast was very mediocre and contained several items that I wouldn't have touched with a ten-foot fork. The pool is in a lovely garden setting and has plenty of chairs, but the towels they give you look like they have been through a war and the pool itself seems of dubious cleanliness at best. The location is right in Mamallapuram, but with a rickshaw ride costing a song, I'm not sure that is such a huge advantage. What is better, to pay for a few 30-cent rickshaw rides or the extra 20 euros for location.

“Relax at the Sea Breeze”

Sea Breeze Hotel

We have stayed at the sea breeze twice, must be good! it is in a really good location, just by the shore temple and on the beach, where we might add, we have played a game of cricket with the villagers. the staff are helpful and polite, the food is not too bad, considering i don't like curry. the only thing to avoid is the cornflakes, kellogs would be horrified! the fresh juices are wonderful, for a wobbly tummy try the papaya and pineapple.

One of the best experiences we had was when a cow (which are sacred ) gave birth to a calf in the scrub just behind the hotel. the staff came to inform us of this event upon which the women from the village came to guard the cow and her calf for the night, this was to protect them from the wild pigs and dogs which roam about. the next morning when the calf was strong enough the women took them both back to the village. a truly magical experience.

The worst experience was in one room we were in, i went to the bathroom in the night to be confronted by the biggest cockroach you have ever seen. i naturally screamed, well so would you!, jumped on the bed and left my husband to deal with it. also ants are a bit of a problem, not nice little english ants but large indian ones. also the pillows are really hard a bit like sleeping on lumps of concrete, but i improvised by sleeping on my sarong

Room is big. Shower room is big. There is a fridge. Yes, that's true. If you stay here with big family, maybe OK. To me, this is an overpriced amateur service hotel.

OK. We stayed there for two nights. You can eat breakfast at terrace. But be careful, there is no fan. I spent 16 days in Tamil Nadu but this place has more flies than other hotel's terrace. I didn't like too many flies flying over foods and my plates. You can't expect clean table cloth too. Food is OK. But tomato soup tasted like prawn... (I am a vegetarian). When an employee came to our room with laundry around 6:30pm, he said his duty ends 6pm but he had to stay longer because we were out....

My worst memory here was a dropping of dogs or something in front of a men's toilet.... they were on outside and .... many. When I found it, it was early in the morning. Maybe dog, maybe.... anyway, it was my first time to witness dropping at expensive hotel.

I would be more patient if it is a 100 rp hotel, or 500 rp. But we paied around 4000 or something. I do not want to stay Sea Breeze agagin. But if you plan to stay here, I can give you 2 good points.

1. Ayurvedic treatment is very good. Therapists are from Kerala. They are professional.

2. Hotel location is very good. You can walk to the main temples and sight seeing places. Even if you use a rickshaw, it's very close.

“stayed a few times”

Sea Breeze Hotel

I stayed here a few times to unwind from jet lag after landing at Chennai, and before continuing down to Pondicherry. I love the way it feels very secluded, even though you can step a few metres onto the main drag of small shops whenever you wish to experience a dose of India. but until that moment you can stay happily cocooned, the building has a pleasant colonial shady feel to it, the beach is so close with the famous ancient stone carvings adjacent, and best of all the private swimming pool is lovely. The restaurant is ok in a cranky fusty way.
One word of warning - a couple of times I booked to stay, and they told me they were full but that I could stay at the Sea Breeze Annexe, which is a separate building owned by them 30 metres up the road. However the Annexe is NOT AT ALL the same thing, it is very ordinary and not recommended. when I email the hotel nowadays I ask them to confirm explicitly that my reservation is for sea breeze and NOt sea breeze annexe !

This is a wonderful seaside hotel. The main walkway leads directly down to the beach and the Bay of Bengal. The beach goes for miles and is quite clean. The hotel beach area is just alongside the Shore Temple.

The rooms are spacious with plenty of cupboards to store your gear; The bathrooms are huge with on tap hot water. The rooms are serviced every day.

The pool is clean and there are plenty of pool lounges around the pool either in the sun or tucked under tall palm trees for plenty of shade if required. Pool towels are provided.

The restaurant and room service is prompt and cheap with very reasonable food.

The staff throughout the complex are attentive and friendly.

We loved our stay here. We ended up spending two weeks here. After the chaos of the rest of India this was a welcome retreat for us to return to each night after our day trips to the surrounding areas.

We would highly recommend this Hotel. It’s got it all – Beach, Pool, comfortable rooms, room service, great staff and all for a very reasonable price.
