“A rustic, comfortable experience on nature's lap”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2014

The Elephant valley is a beautiful eco-resort tucked way deep in the newly created Kodaikanal Forest reserve. There is a small rivulet that flows through the resort making it fun for the kids to splash around. If you are an outdoors kind of family this is a place you'll enjoy.

The staff is very friendly, attentive and reasonably efficient. They made us feel very comfortable thus making our stay very pleasurable.

Food options are limited due to a small kitchen/staff. However whatever is served is tasty and healthy. The continental food is better than the Indian food. In case food is a critical element of your holiday better speak with them before making the booking.

Room Tip: The Tectona cottage is probably the best option but the view from the porch of the tent house is ama...

This was my favorite place in India. Separated away from the noise and chaos of the city streets, Elephant Valley offers the most serene experience. The bungalows are separated from one another, providing the privacy and peace that many come here for. Although the term "eco-farm hotel" might insinuate otherwise, the rooms are very clean and well kept.

The hotel sits on a large coffee plantation and cultivates a wide array of other crops. The restaurant will take your order several hours ahead of time in order to collect and prepare the freshest food from the land. There is a wide array of menu options, and the food was outstanding.

You can opt to take a three or six hour, guided trek through the valley. For the best chance at observing wildlife, it is recommended to take treks early in the morning, around 0600-0700 hours.
If you’re feeling adventurous, follow the defined path along the river for about twenty minutes to reach the cliff of a huge waterfall. The best pictures can be captured around 1800 hours as the sun drifts below the hilltops.

Room Tip: We stayed in a bungalow that was closer to the edge of the hill, we were able to hear the waterfall...

Using the telephone number on the Elephant Valley Hotel web site we phoned to make a booking. The price quoted for 4 adults and 2 children seemed to be more expenses than that quoted on the website, but we made the booking and paid for it. On arrival at the Elephant Valley Hotel we were told that there was no booking, but fortunately they had 2 rooms anyway. On further inquiries it turned out that the phone number was not that of the Elephant Valley Hotel but of Dune Group in Pondicherry, who had booked us into the wrong hotel (and more expensive hotel) by mistake.

We asked for a refund of the difference in cost, but the management of Dune Group refused. Basically they made the mistake and dishonestly kept the money.

In addition, the Elephant Valley Hotel was not entirely satisfactory. The rooms were bizarre. We had what they called the honeymoon cottage. The bed was little more than single size, and the room too narrow to be called a room. There was a wood stove, which smoked the room out. The toilet seat in the bathroom didn't fit the toilet. The room itself was about half a kilometre (or so it seemed) from the dining room. At night there were small lights leading the way along the paths to the room, but the vital one at a fork in the path was missing, so we got completely lost. At dinner, the service was a shambles, and drinks we ordered never did arrive.

Please avoid anything to do with The Dune Group, who are the management of Elephant Valley Hotel.

Room Tip: Look at all the rooms and chose one with a normal size bed.

We went in the month of August 2013, and it was a great experience with nature. The property is beautiful in the midst of a jungle and a river flowing through it.
This place is meant for people who would like to unwind and relax, away from city's hussle.

Kodaikanal city is just 20 KMs from this place, so you can plan to go for a day to explore city's kodai lake (we did cycling in rain around the lake instead of boating and it was an experience in itself).

You can plan a trek to ganeshpuram water falls (2-3KMs) or a trek up till Single Tree (6-7 kms), if you wish to trek. It is recommended to take a local guy along with.
Though we did not see any elephants or bisen on the way, but we saw trees broken and elephant dung on the way. Local people know the smell, and behavior of these wild animals, so its better you hire one.
You can hire one from Resort (250 per hour) or from village outside the gate (at rs 400-500 for 5-6 hours).

No traffic, birds chirping, serene, fresh water flowing, valley weather (pleasant).

People with kids should be careful while booking the rooms. 3 cottages - Peninsula 1,2,3 are far away from restaurant, and you would have to cross the river to reach there.

Its a place to enjoy and relax, early in the morning, as weather is extremely good.

Do not expect on time service, though everything you order comes eventually.

The staff is very helpful. Food is very good. When there is full occupancy, they usually have buffet. Lunch is rs 300 and dinner 450.

They have both veg and non-veg food. One should take a tour of organic farm (with staff's help or themselves) as well as coffee house.

Their coffee is very good (no chikori powder mixed).

Room Tip: Jasmine and Tectona rooms are nearer to restaurant or reception area Kerala House is costlier and h...

Amazing setting compilmented by fantastic hospitality. We stayed in the riverside cabin and enjoyed every moment. The organic, homegrown food was exceptional as was the personalised service. Overall the staff couldn't be more accomadating or helpful. We hope to return soon. Highly recomended.

We have spent 2 nighs 3 days @ Elephant Valley on Feb 9 to 11, 2013. We stayed in Tree house and it made us to feel the nature in a very calm as well as adventures (some times). The way from reception to tree house is about 10 mins walk through out the natural sites.... You have to cross a wooden bridge or you have to cross a running stream to reach the tree house. When we were there, the water in the stream is very less, so it was easy for us to cross the stream... but on rainy seasons the water will be too high and forcefull it seems... because the water stream flows towards a falls, where you have to have trekking for 1 to 1.5 hrs to reach the falls.

All the different types of cottages like jasmine, tent house are close to reception area. Jasmine is good for travellers with family. Veninsula or hilltop is lilttle inside the forest and better you can stay with 2 family if you are staying in these cottages. Because, sometimes elephants or bisen will come and give some noises in the near by places...

If you are deciding to stay at tree house, You may get panic by hearing lot of animal sounds.. there are changes you wll be caught by monkeys or big black forest squirrels inside tree house, as there are lot of open holes we can see in tree house. there is no proper lock inside the tree house door... So if you are dare enought to face small animals, you can stay in tree house. On our stay, we were about to face forest squirrels.. thank god it did not come inside.. If going as couple, I wont suggest to take tree house... You may not have pleasent night ;)

Food is awesome enough... i saw some comments on the food; that is not really true to their heart... And ofcourse, there wont be any service to your cottage as they have to walk for 20 to 25 mins in forest.. if you need food, you have to walk towards the restaurant....

If you have luck, you can see different variety of birds and bisen..

Caution: You can see plenty of snakes crossing on your way if your stay is at tree house, veninsula and hill top. We saw arround 3 snakes on our way.... :)

Summary is, EV is really a very nice place to spend the holiday in a very calm and naturistic way. You definitely will enjoy the stay over there.

Room Tip: For couples, honeymoon cottage For family, jasmine 1 or 2. For nature lovers, veninsula or tree ho...
