The rooms are spotlessly clean (a rarity in India) and have nice touches. A lot of effort was put into decor. The rooftop view is really good, overlooking the lake, city and the palace behind. BUT, we cannot recommend this place to anyone because of very bad management.
Three examples follow:
1. We arrived late (and had given details of the time of arrival earlier in the day), and found the place locked and empty. If we hadn't had a cell phone, I'm not sure what we would have done. We did call, and the owner came over from his other hotel (they own three in town) and opened up eventually (it's a cold place to be waiting late at night). So, no manager is on premises between 10:30pm and 6am.
2. 24 hour hot water is advertised and charged for (1200 rupees is a lot for India, we had a much better room for the same price with a view, hot water, TV and just as much charm in Udaipur). We tried to have a shower after dinner, but the water was lukewarm (and it's freezing this time of year). The hot water situation was eventually rectified after more than an hour of waiting for the geyser to heat up, then working to convince the lady who works there to call her boss (she was afraid she would get in trouble for the hot water not working). I finally had to walk over to the other hotel (where the owner lives) and ask him to look into the hot water. He came over, turned a temperature knob on the roof (he claimed the monkeys must have turned it down), and hot water did come. But, what a hassle.
3. We had an early morning departure so asked to pay the night before checkout. The owner does not trust his staff to handle any money (says a lot) so "a boy was sent to fetch me" and walk me over to the other hotel to pay our bill. It was dark, cold and incredibly inconsiderate to have me walk to him to pay the bill. Either empower your staff or make yourself available! Unbelievable.
