I've stayed in several RTDC hotels across Rajasthan, so I know they don't promise much beyond a basic, clean and comfortable stay. But Saras is pushing the boundaries of these definitions. I'd stayed here twice previously a decade ago, and was very satisfied then, so I automatically choose to turn up here again. But it was evident from the start that things had gone south. What was previously a nice clean building on a busy but shady tree lined road, was now a dusty building besides a busy dusty chaotic state highway, with no sign of any greenery, no traffic signals to turn into the hotel etc. Inside the ageing continued. Everything looks tired, tatty and in need of TLC. Staff was not in uniform, just some unshaven rural folk running around doing your bidding. They asked if I wanted to check the room before booking which I did, and found the room to be satisfactory and clean, even though basic and well worn. The TV & remote worked, the bathroom was clean if tatty. The linen and blankets were clean, but again, showing their age. Since I had only one night's stay, I did not mind the slight lowering of standards. They did not have any room heaters (unlike other RTDC hotels) so the room was pretty cold unless you snuggled in the blankets. Their restaurant and menu is very basic, but the butter chicken was simple and good, not very spicy and the rotis were very decent. Breakfast was limited to omelettes, which were also acceptable quality. The restaurant was very chilly in the absence of heating. Even though I had a room facing the back of the complex, traffic noise was irritating as trucks drove past early morning with their honking and revving. The corridor also was a bit noisy at night. All in all, budget conscious travelers who stay here for a night or two knowing what to expect, should not be too disappointed. Everything works, just. But if you go there expecting frills, spotless fluffy towels, smiling liveried waiters and gleaming rooms, you will come back cursing.
