“Warm Hotel but bit old building”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2009

Hotel is located in center of munnar. easy access to anywhere.

Hotel gives a aroma of wood. looks bit old but is comfortable.

beds are bit dump but its because of the climate in Munnar.

Hot water timings. Food was ok.
Overall.. Loved Munnar so liked hotel.

We were there in this hotel from 13th June to 15th June (3 days)

The Hotel was undergoing Renovation and only one Restuarant was functional. The Choice of menu was very limited, besides the food served in the Daily Buffet had very little choice. The Food was below average along with the Serive of there staff. The room were not at all maintained for the price they are charging.

I would not recommend this place for stay to anyone in Munnar.

Overall not a very good experience and not value for money.

Reception was very bad. When we entered, it was not a warm welcome at all. they dont know to welcome guests. Everyday there was hot water problems. Bed was very old and room was not clean. Not worth 2800rs per night. restuarant river view was nice. Food was also ok. Food service and laundry is very good.

I booked a delux room i west wood which was bit expensive 2800rs/night. The room was very small and foul smell was coming from bathroom. It was not a pleasant experience when we entered the room. Bed was old and room was not dust free. Welcoming was bad at reception and it was like going to police station where nobody cared. There was hot water problems and evryday we had to fight with reception for hotwater. Food was ok with not many varieties. Only good thing is the river view and room service.Otherwise i dont recommend this to anyone. Munnar itself is not that exciting after so much of travel. I got misguided by photos of munnar.

We had come here in tour group from Bombay during Diwali vacation. After Cochin's 1 N stay, we had stayed here for 3 Nights. When we came it was all dark and hence we couldn't see famous tea garden view near Munnar. Check in was smooth with tour operator. We were put in Executive Riverview Room .

The resort itself is a some 4-5 storey building with adjacent garden area on mountain river front. Inside of building is totally done up with wood and that gives feeling of living in a big wooden cottage. Our room was nice & clean with balcony facing river. Bathroom was having small bath tub and was small but nice.

When I got up early morning next day, it was cold ( but I would say it was very pleasant feeling than hot & sweaty cochin ) and birds chirping and river and full greenary all over small hill & nearby river was quiet relaxing.

I can not comment on resort food quality as we were provided all meals at the top floor convention area. It has table tannis, carrom and small gym also on top floor. Due to pleasant pine wood floor cleaner's lingering fragrance, whole room & hotel was smelling nice. It was as if wood used in room was releasing pinewood perfume ! Our room was having TV, mini fridge, DVD player.

The adjacent garden lawn and seats near river were nice & cozy. We had camp fire at night near river front. The ground floor open restaurant was nice. The views from there were excellent.

Since this hotel offered a valley feeling with hills nearby, I liked that feeling of being surrounded by green hills ( instead of overlooking valley from mountain ). Also, hotel is located 1 km before town centre in a secluded by lane running parallel to river stream. Since all other attractions like Mettupatty Dam - for speed boating or Ervikulam National Park are located 12 - 15 km from town centre in different directions , near city centre location was good as travelling time gets reduced on mountain terrain. Speed is around 15 - 20 km/hr. on mountains in bus.

I liked Munnar very much and wanted to stay more and do day trekking among tea gardens. But, I will definitely come to Munnar with more days in hand.

See photos here.

  • Liked — moderately dark wooden look & wooden flooring , balcony & garden view , feeling of being at the valley amidst nearby green hills
  • Disliked — may be none

West Wood is a quaint hotel. The staff a very attentive and professional and are happy to fullfill any request. The rooms are very clean , it's rainy season so it's a little chilly in the room but with a few extra blankets it's cosy. For 1700 rupees breakfast and dinner is included. They also have an in house massage spa which is worth a visit. It 's a 5 minute rickshaw ride to munnar town but I think West Wood is a great deal.

  • Liked — the service
  • Disliked — it's a little cold in the rainy saeson

One of the four hotels we stayed at during our visit to Kochi area. It is on a side street and a lot of the area was under construction at the time.

Positives:
Decent food, buffet style

Somewhat not related to the hotel but I thought I point out the area. I actually walked about 4km back and forth to Munnar (this is about 2km before you actually get to Munnar) in the late evening/night (around 9pm) and the only thing I was worried about was getting hit by cars or falling off the edge of the cliff (river to the right down below) because I couldn't see much apart from occasional passing cars that illuminated the road in front of me. Couldn't sleep and I wanted to admire the wonderful galaxy we live in (it was a cloudless night and the streetlights weren't working). Needless to say it is in a safe area. Be sure to visit the national park while you are in this area, it is breathtaking.

Negative:
Similar experience to another hotel we stayed at (Pagoda Resorts) while in the Kerala area. The manager did not want us to use our credit card, something about a machine broken. I told him I didn't have sufficient cash upon which his mood changed from friendly to "disappointed". We sat staring at each other and then he took my credit card and came back a minute later, apparently the machine was now magically working. Then he wanted to charge me another 20 bucks (rupees) for some other incidentals (why he didn't just charge me at once I don't know) and got plain rude when I gave him 500, the lowest denomination I had. He asked how did I expect to use a 500 bill when the balance was so minute. I had to laugh and told him I will do better next time and make sure I always carry appropriate change for hotels.

Nothing to write home about, decent hotel. Don't let this deter you but there may be values elsewhere. What didn't help in our case was our travel agent Radhakrishnan (in Kerala), avoid this guy at all costs, he is a ripoff.

  • Liked — Nice lobby, a mural that goes all the way up to the upper floors, nice views from the breakfast area
  • Disliked — Decent rooms for the area, nothing to write home about.
