Booking: The first impression I had of Deshadan was not very impressive since when I called, I was told that it was a holiday and they can't revert on the enquiry. I also had to follow up the next day, despite having dropped them a mail for them to revert. Thereafter, Vipin took over to co-ordinate our trip and it was an amazing experience after that point. Responses were prompt, suggestions were offered and a good price was offered.
Journey to Resort: We were received at the Kochi airport and stopped over to see a waterfall and a spice garden(can be avoided) on the way. Its quite a long drive and hence be prepared for the journey. The last few kilometers are through the tea gardens and extremely beautiful. The approach to the resort can be missed - so keep looking for the Deshadan signage just at the point where you take a steep climb for the last kilometer or so.
The resort: When we landed at the resort, checkin was extremely prompt. We had booked a valley view room (please ensure you book only the valley view rooms, it is completely worth the premium you pay). The first night, the hotel had organised a bonfire for the guests with complimentary snacks. Was a wonderful way to get the guests to mingle and enjoy the chill in the air. Food was ok, though both the taste and the spread can be improved upon. However, the service was excellent. Since we were travelling with a 1.5 year old infant who needs chicken for every meal, the staff organised for boiled chicken specifically for him. The gesture was amazing and makes you feel like going back for another visit.
The room: The bed was quite small and since we had an infant to accommodate on that bed , it seemed even smaller. Furnishing was basic. Lighting in the room is a clear area to work upon since it seemed very dark at night. The bathroom had a stink emanating from probably the drainage pipe and it stayed the course of our stay there. The bathroom also had a hot water problem at the wash basin (which the staff couldn't fix), though it worked fine in the bath tap. Also there were some pest problems but you tend to expect it when staying at a place in the lap of nature. However, the room and indeed the resort, is all about the view it offers from the attached balcony. You could just sit there admiring nature and sipping a cup of tea the whole day long without getting bored since the view changes every half hour. One moment there are clouds in your room and soon enough you could see the entire valley below. Simply breathtaking!
Service and checkout: Excellent. No complaints at all.
Things to see: Check out the tea museum and do not miss the dam. The other points can be avoided. Please beware of the Kathakali dance nonsense. If you have ever seen a Kathakali performance, even on TV, it is not something you want to waste your time and money on. If you are travelling with a kid, like we were, you may want to visit a new park which has come up some 15 kms from the resort which offers horse ride, camel ride and an elephant ride all at one place. The drive to that park is picturesque too.
Will go back to Deshadan when we are at Munnar next.
Valley view for sure.
