The Location: If you are looking to be in a central location, no matter how bustling and crowded, Tall Trees is not for you. If you want to be with/in the midst of nature, then TT is your place. Created in the middle of a 60+ acre Cardamom plantation/ forest land about 7 km away from the town centre, TT is one of the older (oldest?) resorts in Munnar. Built on land which is strictly governed by Forest Dept laws (something which is unfortunately more often than not violated in India), TT blends in marvelously with the verdant surroundings. The landscaping is noteworthy in its lack of artifice and artificial props. The quietness of the place amplifies the birdsound - listen for the bird which sings a lovely more than a minute long tune. Now that is really a bird song with a proper stanza :-)
(Munnar town is like any unplanned hill station town centre - busy and noisy though providing ample opportunity for quick access to transport and little shops. The temperature in the town centre is a few degrees warmer than the area where TT is located.)
Rooms : There are about 20 rooms with balconies( a combination of standard and luxury / duplex) which are built in a way which ensures reasonable privacy. We were in a standard room which was more than adequate. Bottled water & a kettle & creamer/ coffee saches are provided. Extra blankets are not kept in the cupboard though I guess they would be provided if asked for. We asked for a radiator instead which was promptly brought. The rooms are very clean with prompt and good housekeeping. We disliked the fact that the sheets were changed daily- not in keeping with the eco theme. The towels take an eternity to dry in the cold monsoon so the daily change of towels was welcomed. The lighting could be brighter ; maybe great for honey mooning couples but not optimal when you want to read at night.
Restaurant : The restaurant located on a higher level than the rooms provides marvelous views (esp if you bag the seats near the windows). While it may not be an easy reach for people who cannot climb stairs/ have bad knees would recommend at least one day time visit to the restaurant. It is an an airy bright room with a glass roof which not only lets in plenty of light but also gives a view of the tall tree tops. In case you cannot make the walk up, room service is available for all meals from the standard menu.
Food: While the chef is happy to accommodate reasonable requests for dishes not on the menu, I would rate the overall food provided 6 on 10 ; filling and adequate though not memorable ; the South Indian dishes would rate an 8 on 10.
Service : The service in the restaurant is amazing - 10 out of 10. There is no request which is too difficult for the boys who are always genuinely friendly and cheerful souls. The housekeeping / gardeners are also lovely, happy people.
The resort offers morning (7.30 am / 9.30 am) and evening walks (5.30 pm) as well as a night campfire. While we set out on our own for a very early morning walk, after about 30 minutes of walking, we turned back after losing the track. In hindsight, going along with the resort guide would have been better. Wear walking shoes with good grip if you intend to walk around the plantation. Wet ground together with fallen vegetation on slopes make for slippery terrain.
Getting around : TT is a good location if you want to walk around tea estates / cardamom estates. The reception can organise for transport if you want to go further out. Transporation charges are steep and inflated for tourists. A three wheeler from Munnar costs Rs 150 and a hatchback car to Munnar town between Rs 300 - 400. A full day in and around Munnar upto Mattupetty will cost between Rs 1300 -1600.
