“Beautiful and peaceful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2007

We loved our 3 night stay. The hotel is in a beautiful and tranquil location in the mountains. We stayed in one of the cottages. The room was very large and comfortable with a balcony looking out over the hills. The staff could not do enough for you. Cups of tea were always on offer and every night before dinner a different "surprise" occurred. The first night pre dinner snacks were brought to our room, the second night we were informed that there would be a barbeque BEFORE dinner! The consumption of the barbeque food resulted in us struggling to eat our dinner but we did our best! The third night there was a pre dinner cocktail party that resulted in everyone staggering into the dining room later. All these extras were FOC!
Dinner was a fixed menu but the variety and quality of the dishes served meant that this was not a problem. As long as you like curry!
There are lovely walks in the area or if you prefer hammocks in the hotel garden for peaceful relaxation.
Highly recommened.

Really enjoyed my stay here, I think it was an amazing little find. It was a long journey up from Cochin to here but once we arrived we were extremely delighted with our choice. Our host was extremely knowledgeable and friendly. Meals were amazing also, really enjoyed the lunches and dinners. It felt like we had the place to ourselves and it was lovely getting up really early to try and see the sun rise. I Couldnt recommend this place enough.

  • Liked — secluded room away from main building and excellent views
  • Disliked — there was evidence of some renovations still going on, I assume they are well finished now.

This must rank as one of our worst travel experiences ever. We had booked a room in the farmhouse three months prior to our trip... which had been guaranteed with a credit card. When we turned up, we were shown into what can only be described as something of a shack. The room that we were expected to stay in was absolutely disgusting. The bed was as hard as nails, the electricity was antiquated and the lights kept going on and off, the walls were filthy, the ceiling looked as if it were about to cave in, there was a bathmat which looked as if a dirty dog had been sleeping on it, there was no hot water in the sink in the bathroom and the shower leaked. There was even a measuring jug underneath the tap to collect the drips! Oh yes... and there was no telephone, no TV and initially no lock on the door. I asked for the latter and was given one.
We were completely disoriented by the whole experience. The price that we had been quoted for our stay was $125 a night—not cheap in India and more expensive than the Taj Garden Retreat in Madurai, which was just luxury compared to this. We had read in a guidebook that the farmhouse rooms were not as nice as the cottages. So, we at first thought that must be what was wrong... but we didn't expect them to be this bad!
As the evening advanced, we started to suspect that something more serious was wrong. We saw another building, which seemed to be the "Farmhouse" and went to challenge the staff. Straight away, they admitted that we hadn't been given the room we had booked. Another group had turned up before us—a family, which was larger than expected. So, they were quite blithely given our room in the Farmhouse... and alternative plans were made for us. What we couldn't believe is: 1) that they had the cheek to give our reserved, guaranteed room to someone else. Just how unprofessional is that? 2) that they didn't inform us of the change. In retrospect, it would have seemed normal for them to do this when we arrived and to offer to help us find alternative accommodation if we were not satisfied with the room they offered us.
As it was, by the time we worked out what had happened, it was already 9.30 p.m. and a bit late to book into somewhere else—especially in busy high season. We said that we did not expect to pay $125 for the room... and were initially offered a reduction of just $25. For us, that was a further sign of dishonesty. This room was not worth $100. It was not worth $50. It was the kind of thing that you'd pay really, really cheaply as a backpacker.
For us, the worst was still to come. Getting to sleep proved almost impossible. There was a door between us and the next room... where the owner lived (we actually suspect that we had ended up sleeping in his bedroom). We could hear absolutely everything on the other side of the door. At first clanking of pans and the television. Once he went to bed, non-stop, ultra-loud snoring... all night long. We must have both got about one hour's sleep each. By the time we got up, we were both exhausted and absolutely furious. On the way to breakfast, my partner challenged the guy we suspected was the owner. At first, he even refused to admit that he was the proprietor (go figure!), but when put under pressure, owned up to the fact. He could obviously see that we were really angry and immediately told us that we wouldn't have to pay. Perhaps the fact that I told him that I am a travel journalist spurred him into that. "You're my guests", he said, "so enjoy!" As though we were in any fit state to enjoy anything after getting hardly any sleep. As I told the guy on the reception, we would have preferred to pay $125 for the room we booked and have slept, rather than to have been in a complete state of exhaustion for free.
We still can't get over the dishonesty and unprofessionalism of this place. Plus, we wonder whether they would have ever admitted to giving our room away, if they hadn't been challenged!
Otherwise, what else can be said about the place? The surrounding landscapes are spectacular... but you'll get that at another place in Munnar. The food is OK... but certainly nothing to write home about. We definitely ate much better during our trip to India.
If you travel to Munnar with a travel company, which works regularly with the Windermere Estate, then you'll probably be fine. Otherwise, there's a risk that you could experience the same thing as us. So, you'd be well advised to go somewhere else.

What an amazing place....! My husband and I chose this place to stay over the more well known Club Mahindra and wow! It is was truly a memorable experience. This place is not to be confused with a decadent 5 star hotel with top of the line amenities...so if that is what you are looking for... maybe this isn't for you....

What this accomodation IS: a place where you truly feel like you are staying on your very OWN plantation estate. The service is amazing and the people who work there will do anything they can to fulfill your request. Hot tea or coffee in the afternoon at any location you please...I had my cup on top of a huge rock looking out to the world...! The grounds are beautiful and the the trekking through the plantations is not to be missed!

Dr. Simon (the owner) and his staff are so very nice and down to earth- they arranged a bonfire along with music and food for the Christmas celebration. You will be on a first name basis with everyone before you leave.

With the perfect combination of rustic charm, impeccable service, and incredible views- The days spent here have given us wonderful memories for years and years to come!!!

If you are looking for something different than your standard "hotel" experience- this is it!

The Windermere was absolutely fantastic!. We were not sure what to expect at this small estate which has some 13 cottages or so. Very personal attention and the staff and the owner., Dr. Simon were great.

This estate sits on a tea plantation - you really feel that you are part of the estate. This estate is not widely known even to the local drivers. Dr. Simon wants to keep it that way.

This place is ideal if you want to spend a quiet, romantic getaway or be with friends and family. It may not be listed as 5star and the facilities may not be there (no gym or spa)... but the service, location and personal attention is genuine.

We picked this over the Club Mahindra hotel and were thrilled with it. Spent Xmas eve here and the hosts had a barbeque bonfire and caroling. The restaurant serves a set meal every day and is like local home cooked food. Beautiful views and just driving around is worth while.

Highly recommed the 2-3 hr trekking trip through the cardamom plantations. Not for little kids (say below 6 or so) or for seniors as there is a fair amount of walking and the terrain is not always even.

This place is a well kept secret. Enjoy!!

After a very hectic 10 days of travel it was a great treat to settle in and relax at the Windermere. This is not the place for a one night stay. Give yourself a couple days to enjoy the beautiful grounds, great rooms and excellent food. The staff were very helpful and the service was first class. Highly recommend!

What a way to spend a New Year! This Estate is wonderful. Rooms are large with oversized bathroom. Service is excellent. Food (Breakfast and Dinner) and all day Tea/coffee are delicious. Staff very friendly. Great view at their lookout. It's like coming home after a long drive. Very secure. I highly recommend to stay at this estate for at least 2nights.
