“A sanctuary of tranquilty”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2012

The owner here is totally signed up to providing a peaceful ,classy establishment with beautiful views evoking times gone by overlooking the tea plantations of Munnar. A completely tranquil and colonial place that is the antidote to the hustle and bustle of normal life.
Prepare to chill. We only stayed one night and be prepared for ok food , excellent staff and serenity.

we stayed only one night, but that was actally a piity becuase t is a beatiful place to stay longer. Our room was extremly clean and nice, the view was stunning! The indian food was incredibly fine! The staff was friendly, helpful and customer oriented. One can arrange nice guided walks thru the tea plantations, the cardamon plantations and so on. We can really recommend the place.

We stayed at this hotel for two nights and I wish we could have stayed longer. The hotel is surrounded by lush tea plantations and overlooks a valley. The hotel’s own huge cardamom and coffee plantation is attached to the grounds -- a two-hour guided tour is arranged by the hotel (with a very pleasant guide) – definitely a highlight of our trip to Kerala. There is a platform set on large boulders near the reception that gives you a great view of the valley. You can see the mist moving in and weaving its way between the tall trees. The hotel staff was very kind, efficient and professional. The guest manager was always around to make sure that everybody was well taken care of. Meals were served in a separate building located in the garden (there is also a reading room/tea room). The menu was set but there was a large choice of (tasty for a Western palate) dishes so you can always find something to your liking. We also had lunch at the estate on our second day: sandwiches and a delicious “tree tomato” juice. Our room was large and had a terrace overlooking a well-kept garden. The atmosphere here is very relaxing and if you’re looking for a place to get away from it all, this is a perfect location. The only complaint I would have is that one of the two pillows on the bed did not smell very good (mildew) – most likely due to the humidity. The boiler in the shower looked old fashioned and taking a shower was a bit complicated as we were never able to get the water temperature right -- ended up using the plastic pitcher (Indian style) and actually enjoyed bathing in an out of the ordinary way (for a Westerner). I have traveled to about 100 countries and this will definitely be a hotel I will remember all my life (along with the (almost) similarly named Windamere Hotel in Darjeeling!). I certainly would like to return here in the future.

It's a very English hotel. Excellent library. The view point gives the best views of Munnar. The food is slightly bland for the Indian traveller. A great place to sit and read or even write a book or just do nothing. But slightly over priced.

Besides the great location (5 km off Munnar up in the hills), we will above all remember the way we were treated by Joe and his team - exceptionally friendly, helpful and heartily. From the first moment we liked it at Wintermere. For lunch and dinner, they do offer Kerala food (no menu but we liked the set 3 courses every day), you find a nice and cosy library, and they also offer a nice little tour through cardamom plantations.
The BUT is price and accomodation: We booked a cottage and finally got a bigger room in the main-building. The fact that the room is bigger obviously qualifies for a so-called T-cottage. We asked for a "real" cottage and at the end even got an upgrade for the same price (so no reason to complain) but overall, the price-policy is questionable.
A cottage costs 8100 Rp (150 USD) in off-season, is clean but basic, has poor isolation (so it gets cold during nights in monsoon season) and you need to heat-up a boiler to have one hot shower.
Considering other options in the neighbourhood, the management really should review their pricing policy - their great staff cannot make up for everything!

Room Tip: If you go for a cottage, make sure that it is a real cottage and not their so-called T-cottage

We ( myself and my wife) stayed for 2 nights at this resort on 16th and 17th August, 2012. We reached around 4 pm in the afternoon and it was raining heavily.... what is the point of visiting Munnar when it was not raining? We were provided with some nice hot tea and snacks and were shown our room ( planatation villa B) which was located at the edge of the resort overooking the mountains and valleys. The view you get from your window or from the sit out was picture card perfect until you go to the View Point which is located within this property after climbing some 80 steps! Here you get a 360 degree views of lush green mountains!
The villa or the room or the cottage.. whatever way they call it.... was a huge place! It has a big bedroom, a drawing room with a huge TV, a big sit out facing the mountains and finally, the bath room which was very huge! The double bed was a combination of 2 single beds placed together and therefore, you get 2 single large quilts which was the best part of the bed!

The food provided here was " sit - in " style " ( not the buffet ) and generally, was tasty... It was bland to an Indian palate, but still was tasty. The room service was efficient.

The entire staff was very courteous and very attentive. Their manager or the owner or the promoter, Mr. John was extremely helpful and gave several ideas for sight seeing around Munnar.

Will visit again with a big gang when it was more raining!

Room Tip: the plantation villas at the edge of the resort

My wife and i spent the final part of our honeymoon here and it really ended on a perfect note. The location is wondrous and we go walking through the spice and tea plantations everyday. We got a free upgrade and the room and view were stunning. The hotel staff and manager were such friendly people and made our stay the experience it was. Before I forget, the food they served was amazing, we would sit in their library before adjourning to the dining room to enjoy the wonderful delights they served us. We wold definitely return but this time as a family. Not to be missed.
