“be careful”

Windermere Estate

Feb 20, 2008

We have just come back from a wonderful trip to Kerala, and spent two nights at the Windemere Estate in Munnar. We would advise any traveller going there to make sure that they do not book one of the farmhouse rooms. Ours was poky, dark, without even two chairs to sit on. The bathroom was in serious need of refurbishment. The shower was in the bath without a curtain, there was scant hot water, and it just shouted " basic backpackers hotel at luxury prices". There are other much better rooms on the estate and we felt rather jealous of the lucky souls in them! Dr Simon, the owner is very charming, but he needs to spend some money on refurbishment. Everything else was ok. If you like spicy food be sure to ask for it otherwise you are given very bland meals. Oh ,and there's no liquor license . If you like a sundowner you will have to visit the government liquor store, an experience but not for the faint hearted!

First realise that they do not have a licence, so no alcohol. Luckily we had some Indian gin. They provided us with Sprite.
A wonderful setting with sunset views from the lookout or a cottage balcony. Go for the cottages, the farmhouse is clean and simple, but the walls are paper thin.......etc. Offered sandwiches on arrival, very strange fillings, but filled a gap. The evening meal was excellent with good "homemade" Keralan food. We had a guided tour down to the tea museum in Munnar which was fascinating. Gave an insight into how life was for the expats in Edwardian times.

“Peaceful retreat”

Windermere Estate

Jan 27, 2008

We stayed only one night at the Windermere Estate but truly enjoyed our stay there. The whole place is the perfect retreat from busy indian cities and roads.
Our room was from the farm house category, the least expensive (125$+Tax per night) of the rooms available. The room was clean, decorated with much love to detail, a nice athmosphere. Breakfast is included. You can pre-order a lunch meal on the previous day as they are not routinely catering at lunch time (we went for a kerala lunch and loved it!). A nice sandwich lunch is provided on short notice. Complimentary tea and cake is served in the afternoons in a garden house. Regular walks through the estate and adjacent plantations are offered, too. The lookout on the estate is a nice spot to watch sunset. The three-course dinner was very nice, served in "the barn" which has a nice little library on top of it.
Simon, the owner, a middle aged doctor, is a very pleasant person. Johnny from the front desk is extremely helpful. They provide you with a map for a little trek into the tea plantations up to a hilltop overlooking the valley.
We would certainly stay there again!
We did not have a TV set in our room but didn´t miss one either. I don´t know if the other categories of rooms have TVs. There is no wifi.

We stayed in a cottage with a verandah that had fantastic views of the tea hills. The cottage was large, clean and charming. Based on reading other reviews, I think the key is to book a cottage rather than a room in the farm house. The rooms in the farm house have no views of the beautiful hills-- and the only reason to come to Munnar is to see the hills. We spent 2 nights and here and enjoyed ourselves. We found the food the tasty and the staff to be attentive.
Its worth doing the plantation walk that starts at the premises. Also, if you have the energy, you can hike thought some of the tea estates that are near by.

“Skip the Windermere”

Windermere Estate

The Windermere is touted as the best in Munnar and its advertisements are certainly enticing. Visions of an unusual, charming and pampering place will dance like plum fairies in your head. Well, put them aside. The reality is a mysteriously decentralized organization - a hotel which says it is not a hotel but you cant understand what it IS, in that case. There is no reception as you arrive, the rooms you are given are reminiscent of dank Canadian cottages with that faint reek of mildew, you are going to be cold and the blankets will smell, the food is downright unpalatable and if you have kids, apart from throwing a basketball (and you are lucky to find itf) there is really nothing to do. The only reason to come to Munnar is for the view. tThere are potential activities in the area of Munnar but no one is rushing to tell you about them, and they will all involve lengthy drives along twisty roads. Give it a miss.
