“Gem Of A Place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 2, 2013

A must visit if you r planning your trip to Munnar. The hospitality is praiseworthy.Specially recommended for family with small kids.Good and pleasant ambiance, fantastic views and personal attention for kids. Excellent location, excellent property.simply love the place..rooms properly designed, adequate balcony, big bathrooms...if you asked me about food..it is just awesome when they add their special services to it...staff is very quiet and nice to interact and ever ready to help u....The he staff is well versed with all cuisines be it north indian ,kerala or any other.Great snacks.Try there nimki chutney !! Its great.Absolutely neat & clean place .There tree houses should be ready in a month's time . Try getting those rooms if the pocket allows. The whole property is surrounded by cardamom , coffee & tea plantations which adds up to the feel. Gardens require a special mention .very beautiful & colourful .Lots of activities for everybody .Also the housekeeping deserves a mention .Linen, beds were the best.Spotless & comfortable.Over all a great place to unwind with reasonably good food. and finally in thee morning you will be woken up by the most melodious voice of a bird that you will never forget. Amazing.

Room Tip: All rooms are great.

Stayed in Kaivalyam for 3 nights in the 1st week of May, 2013. Everything was top notch; the rooms (we stayed in the top floor) were quite big and luxurious; the food (all vegetarian) was excellent and the hospitality of Mr. Harish almost made me believe that I was staying in a dear friend's own house.
A small negative point was that the view from the huge balcony was somewhat obstructed by the numerous trees in the plantation.

We booked this little gem on the recommendation of a friend who had been there recently and this was easily the best choice we have made in the last 10 years.
The location and views are stunning, as you literally walk in the clouds. The rooms are spotless, airy, cozy and we slept like babies. The service is courteous and prompt, we had a small issue with the geyser in our room and it was fixed in a jiffy. The staff are smiling and very efficient.
The amazing, fantastic food- it takes you to another level altogether. My 5-year-old daughter, who can be described as fussy on a good day, didn't need coaxing to dig in. I have never seen her eat on a holiday and here, she would actually voice her hunger! This place deserves an extra 6th star for the food alone. This is paradise for a vegetarian in Kerala, the variety, the taste, the service - flawless!
Harish and Anju, the couple who own this little bit of paradise, are doing a great job. I hope they do not add more rooms, save for the two treehouses that are coming up.
A special mention for Mr. Rajendran, the driver, who ferried us up and down the slope several times smilingly (Kaivalyam is accesses by a steep road, manageable only by a 4 wheel drive, provided gratis).
The best activity around this place is the Punarjani traditional village, where you can watch Kathakali and Kalaripayattu, we attended their shows all 3 evenings, totally enthralling. The 5 km walk through a neighbouring tea estate to the Attukad waterfall worked up a good sweat, but the view at the end of it was disappointing.
Don't think twice before choosing this place, the food will convert even die-hard carnivores! We would definitely return here.

Room Tip: Choose rooms 201 to 204.

We stayed here in April 2013 for 2 nights...A truly lovely, tranquil location - up in the mountains, literally in the middle of nowhere. Beautiful, large rooms; stunning scenery; wonderful staff; an incredible escape. The tours we went on were great - the walk down to the river, via the spice gardens, was lovely and our guide was so helpful and patient. We also enjoyed an hilarious theatre trip - weirdest theatre show we've ever experienced, but truly worth it for the magnificent make up and costumes, as well as the dramatic martial arts show afterwards. The staff were really kind to us, especially when we had to take a quick trip to a doctor in Munnar - thank you! Finally...the food....what can we say?!? WOW! Authentic, delicious, fresh, amazing...yum yum yum!! A wonderful place to stay in Munnar.

We had a great stay here. The room was fantastic and the staff could not do enough for us. There was a great variety of spices and fruit growing in the resort and it was great to walk round and see everything. As meat eaters who think vegetarian food is very nice as long as there is meat included, the food here was very good, although I discovered spicy was lots of spices and not chilli heat. By that I mean that on our first night when we asked for the food to be spicy, we understood hot, but it was rather strongly spiced flavoured. Not a complaint. Just something we learned. All in all, to be recommended.

The property is a vast & well maintained one. Good for people looking for a get away from the chaos of city life.
Rooms are clean & immaculately maintained. The attached sit out is a bonus.
The place is run by a friendly & sweet couple Anju & Harish. The staff there was full of courtesy & warmth.
It has a good homely touch thanks to the ambience of the resort & the amazing food served.
The place is pure vegetarian. It stands out due to the fact that the food is not the typical masala filled & oily restaurant food.
It is a well planned resort with ample of space to walk around like a trek to river side, spice plantation walks etc plus an open area to play games like badminton. There are a host of indoor games as well to keep you engaged if required.
We enjoyed our stay at the Kaivalyam and look forward to visit the resort again. It is surely a place we'd recommend highly to friends & family.

We were at Kaivalyam Retreat from the 3rd of may to the 6th of May 2013 and had booked 3 rooms and i should say that it was an absolute pleasure. We had decided to book Kaivalyam purely on the basis of Trip Advisor reviews and i am happy to say that we were not let down. The hotel is situated about 7-8 kms from Munnar town. If you are visiting Munnar , i would highly recommend staying a little away from the town to truly enjoy the nature and beauty this place has to offer. Most good hotels are located at similar distances from Munnar town.

To start off with the property, this hotel has a fantastic location. Its probably about the kilometer from the main road and you have to take an SUV to reach the hotel from the main road. The SUV is provided by the hotel as and when requested to travel to and fro from the hotel and i would recommend using that service instead of trying to take you own vehicle upto the hotel as the terrain would require an appropriate vehicle and driving abilities. We reached the hotel at about 8pm. Harish was kind enough to call me at around 6.30pm to check on my status and also to take our order for dinner. Like mentioned in other reviews, the hotel only serves vegetarian food and is prepared in a homely fashion which i really liked. Although the food options are a bit limited compared to a full fledged hotel , their service and quality more then makes up for it.

With regards to the rooms, the rooms are of decent size and have been done up very tastefully. The Linen, bed-sheets, towels etc were very clean and spotless. The hygiene levels are maintained at very good standards. The view from the room was very nice and there was a nice little sit-out. My only grouse is that the hotel and rooms do not have air conditioning. But saying that the weather was pleasant and we didn’t severely miss the AC although it would have been nice to have. I spoke to Harish about this and his explanation was that Munnar weather is generally very pleasant and also the fact that more then 90% hotels in Munnar didn’t have air conditioning.
The hotel does arrange a few activities like yoga sessions, Spice plantation walks, A soft trek to the river etc. We did the Spice plantation walk and enjoyed it very much. My 5 yr old daughter simply loved it.
A big thank you to Harish and Anju who are doing a fabulous job and i am sure it takes a lot to keep up the standards consistently. I would highly recommend Kaivalyam Retreat and would definitely like to return.
