“Great hotel but depressing lighting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2011

The hotel is new – not more than a few years old and not very well-known except to the tour circle – and will surprise you positively. I was pleasantly taken aback by the grandeur of the hotel. The façade is much better than most other hotels in the area, the rooms are very well furnished. The location is in Old Munnar town, within the main town itself and around 10-15 kms away from most attractions of Munnar, so the location is easy on your travel budget. The only downside is you don’t get to live in the clouds.

I liked our room- it was not cramped and was beautifully furnished. A big lacuna in the rooms is the lighting. The room is pleasantly shadowed in the day and depressingly dark from early evening onwards. It is too cold, windy and foggy to go out in the evenings - at least in the winter and the surroundings are invisible from the balcony in the dark, so it can get irritating that the room is too dark to do anything much except sleep. Apart from this pretty serious problem, our stay was very pleasant. The room is clean, the bathroom spacious and bright. Full marks for the interior design except the lighting.

Although the rooms don’t have a view to write about because the hotel is in the town and not on a hill, Room no. 308 and the rooms above and below it do have some sort of a view. These rooms are corner rooms and therefore the balcony is open on two sides. The smaller side of the balcony overlooks a green football field and one can see the clouds descending on the green hills from the balcony in these rooms.

The hotel is built on a ‘cinema’ theme since it is built on land that formerly housed the only cinema theatre in Munnar in the 1900s. The rooms are furnished in the movie theme, which makes for an interesting change from the usual hotels. The eye for detail in the interior designing is amazing. So is the service. Full marks to the restaurant staff for investing their service with ‘hospitality’ rather than just professionalism. The front desk is helpful although a little theatrical and slightly false in their cheerfulness. Check in and check out were reasonably quick.

The food was ok and the Chinese menu quite tasty. Surprisingly, there was very little Kerala food on the table. To give them credit though, after I asked the front desk about it, I was promptly offered South Indian items for breakfast the next day. Breakfast could do with some improvement - the variety wasn’t really wide and the items were not hot. One big thing to note about the restaurant is its madly overpriced food. Bottled water costs Rs.50 per bottle! Yes, you read it right. If you pick up bottled water from the room, it costs you Rs.35 but the restaurant charges you Rs.50! Pick it up from one of the shops outside, it will cost you Rs.15. I didn’t try out the restaurants in the surrounding hotels, so I can’t recommend going outside for your meals but worth a try.

Silver Tips was different from all the other hotels I have ever visited... The theme of movie is very unique and they have tried to maintain the theme, everywhere, right from the entrance to the rooms and restuarant.... The rooms are very clan, service was perfect, and the food was also nice,.... The hotel is very calm and quiet giving us our own privacy... i visited Silvertips with my friends, and had an awesome time there...

this hotel was part of our Kerala tour package and we dint have many complains with this place.
a old movie projector stand testament that this place was Built on the ground where a "Talkies" (supposed to have been munnar's first and only ) once stood .
each room has a movie theme as are the restaurant . ( there are 2 one "pure" Veg and the other a multi cuisine )
the reception staff were very friendly and helpful and even attended our complains at 2 in the morning .
don't expect to much variety for breakfast ( just the usual idli, vada puri baji, bread butter eggs )
its advisable to eat out as the restaurant is over priced and have very small portions leaving you hungry and cheated .
this place has small library and movie collection where books and CDs can be borrowed at no extra charge .Munnar city has nothing to see after dark and no night life to speak of . the books and movies are a innovative way to spend the rest of the night

we did have some problem with the hot water which could not be fixed even after repeated complains ( water stayed hot only for 5 min ,a prob when you are in a clod place like munnar )

As part of our Holiday plan we came to Munnar from Cochin and stayed in Silvertips for 2 nights , on 4th & 5th Nov 2010 before leaving to Thekkedy (Priyar).

First thing we noticed that the Hotel has blended movie world to hospitality. Its lobby, rooms, restaurant, coffee shop, entrance, every part of the Hotel has imprint of something related to movie world...be it wall photos, posters, movie named room ( we stayed in taare Zameen par), or movie projectors and other machineries. Our driver told us that till recently at the hotel site there existed a movie theater, which was demolished to build the hotel. We understood the connection of movie and silvertips.

The hotel has rich furniture, fixtures and furnishing. It has nice and grand decor, interiors and facilities (such as TT board, spa, etc). The room was spacious, and comfortable.

Main problem we found here was first in service, which was laid back and delayed and secondly lack of inter department communication. We had MAP plan for the family (2 Adult plus two children). This was clearly written in our tour operator's voucher, and I've also confirmed it before checking in. In spite of this, during the dinner time a waiter came to us and sternly informed that dinner will be complementary only for three of us ! It was very embarrassing for my family. I had to spend ten minutes in sorting out the issue after which they said sorry profusely; but till then our mood was spoiled. This confusion resulted because of lack of proper communication between their booking office and the hotel desk/restaurant.

Such lack of communication we felt over and over again in our two days stay in the silvertips.

Food in the restaurant was just OK. Fish dish was poor both the days. Veg dishes/curries were better. Breakfast was also just ok.

With improvement in service, food and inter office communication this very new hotel can become the favourite tourist destination because of its excellent location, good facilities and nice furnishing and decor.

We arrived in a group. We had a lot of experiances. Our group frequently make travels to many cornors of India, but to Munnar, first time. Right from the beginning, i don't know, he gave his name as Jemson, i think he is manager of that property. His staff knew that we are a group and gave us all support. They made us understand that other guests are staying in the Hotel. Very very polite. Mr. Jemson came and met us all in the rooms. thanks lots.
I and my friends xtend all support to Mr. Jemson. The next time we will come with our familys to this hotel itself. Only have to put COLORS Channel on the TV list. Food OK. But, well managed hotel. SUPER THEME......................1st in India....................
