“Beautiful and mostly quiet”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2013

We stayed one night and had a great experience. The setting is awesome, the rooms are nice, and the staff and proprietors are extremely friendly. I would most definitely stay here again.
They serve a very nice breakfast daily and have a beautiful view of the ocean and a nice quiet beach. The beach on the other side of the island is what I consider to be over crowded

Room Tip: If you are traveling with kids the rooms might be small

Thanks for taking the time to review us even if you could stay only one night.
We are so glad that we could accommodate your last minute booking during Easter Week and make an exception for your family on our normal policy of maximum capacity of two people per room and 11.00am check out.
Even though we appreciate your tip about the room been small, if travelling if kids, we do not want to confuse the future guests, because the minimum age for staying at Mayoka is normally 18 years and above, to maintain an adult environment, for the privacy and tranquility of all our guests.

Should you come back and spend more time with us at Mayoka, don't miss the fabulous dining with our Chef Crystelle!

There is not enough space to talk about all the wonderful aspects of this place. No negatives, five-star quality all around. John and Barbara are so charming and welcoming. We felt as if we were visiting friends that we hadn't seen in several years in their private Caribbean villa. Always attentive, informative and happy to chat, they also have the grace and professionalism to recognize when you just want to sit by yourself and read a book. My wife and I stayed for a week in the romantic Royal suite (the only room in the main lodge, on the second floor) with a king canopy bed, from which you look through a wall-sized picture window high over the crystalline infinity pool to the reef and ocean beyond. The double soaking tub was perfect for relaxing and warming up after scuba-diving. Steps to the beach, the reef is a short, 1/4 mile swim through placid water, but you can kayak half-way and tie up to a buoy. Crystal-clear, shallow, very healthy reef, perfect for photos. Gorgeous sunset views from the pier on the beach and also from the new, tree-top deck they were installing while we were there. We were so impressed with Crystelle's cuisine (she's Cordon Bleu-trained) that we ate in most nights and just told her to surprise us. Even breakfast was fresh and new (lime-zest in pancakes? Oh, yes!). We invited newly-made, next-door friends to dinner our last evening and felt as if we were giving a small catered dinner in our own home. Elvin, the prep chef and general factotum, and his wife Gabby were ever-helpful and friendly (try the island food at their own restaurant out at the road!). John's recommendation for Tranquilseas next door for scuba was spot-on (see my review on their site). And even on the rare cloudy day, we had our pick downstairs of the large reading library, DVD collection in the home theater and shooting a few games of pool. John and Barbara, thanks so much for making our much needed R&R week exceed all our expectations. We hope to come back soon.

Room Tip: The Royal suite is the ultimate romantic choice. Other rooms are not quite as grand, but looked very...

At Mayoka Lodge, what really makes the magic work, is the blessing of having so many wonderful guests such as yourselves.
We have been extremely fortunate to be surrounded by visitors you arrived as guests and left and friends.
In the end, this is what the Mayoka Lodge experience is all about!...

When you come back, our Chef Crystelle has more surprises for you and you HAVE TO SEE the recently completed sunset deck, which is now our guests favorite spot to relax and enjoy the dolphins in the morning and the spectacular Roatan sunsets ..still looking for the green flash!

Thank you so much for the pictures that you posted on TripAdvisor... we LOVE guests photos!

Don't wait too long to come back, the weather is simply gorgeous.

Stay warm

My son and I stayed at the Lodge for 4 nights while in Roatan our annual father/son diving trip. On paper, the Mayoka Lodge is a beautiful boutique hotel with wonderful rooms and terrific amenities. However, the property is much more than that,......There are many resorts that are well appointed with great facilites. However, what makes the Mayoka Lodge so special are its managers---John and Barbara. They are the perfect hosts....attending to all of your needs. They have created a family atmosphere that allows for you to interact with your fellow guests and feel at home in the lodge. The Lodge's chef Cristelle (sp?) is terrific; you should have her cook you at least one meal while you are there. All and all, I can't say enough good things about our experience at the Lodge. This is the best place to stay at Roatan and it is because John and Barbara create such a welcoming environment.

Thank you for your kind words.. you and your son, once again, reminds us why we love so much Mayoka!
Seeing our guests so relaxed and comfortable here, simply warms our hearts.
We finally named the Restaurant and the sunset deck is almost done.
Last night we had our fist sunset from the spectacular tree top view and it was quite special.
Today we started the building of the private massage deck, nestled in the palm trees, just off the main ocean front deck.
Will post some pictures as soon as it is finished.
Looking forward to your next visit, hoping to meet also your wife!

I found myself looking for a hotel at the very last minute having been let down by a friend! The night before i was due to fly to Roatan, I was sat in my hotel in Austin, Texas and stumbled across the Mayoka Lodge. I called to book, and spoke to John the owner, he confirmed there was a room available and i booked right away!

I arrived at the lodge, and was greeted by John and his wife Barbara. The lodge is INCREDIBLE! Incredible outlook, fantastic pool, clean and perfect equipped rooms and amazingly friendly staff. My arrival cocktail put me in the holiday mood, and as i was travelling alone, John and Barbara invited me out with some other guests and friends for dinner that night.

I cannot fault this boutique hotel, everything about it was perfect. John and Barbara are amazing hosts, and I cannot wait to come back and next time I will be taking my girlfriend!!

THANKYOU FOR AN AMAZING WEEKEND!!

We are also so pleased that you find us!
Thanks to your suggestion, we changed our category on TripAdvisor to hotel, to make it easier for other potential great guests, like yourself, to find us.
Now, get back down here soon and bring your girlfriend for a longer stay and more of Elvin's famous Pina Colada!

Warmly

Read all the reviews and you will see the long list of superlatives---from
the managers' attentiveness, to the chef's food, to the support staffs'
responsiveness, to the quiet location with good snorkeling and kayaking.
as well as the opportunity for varied excursions. If you want that perfect mix of being able to be active when you want and relax when you want it is all here.
There are also the private tennis court surrounded by a 10 foot high fence covered with flowering vines, the very nearby dolpin training center where dolpins are viewable from kayaks, and a two bars with restaurants within 500 feet with live music and dancing. On top of all
that Barbara will speak Italian if you wish and John will burn a CD with
a movie if you can't find the one you want in their extensive library.
My wife and I travel frequently but do not usually return to the same place---we plan on coming back here.

We are so happy you enjoyed your stay at Mayoka! I think you hit the "nail on the head" when you describe us relaxing yet close to the action of choice! Now, I have to learn to speak Italian! Look forward to your return--the tennis court misses you! BTW, Barbara and I finally went out to play. Lets just say, a few balls disappeared in the now famous flowering vines! Thanks again for choosing Mayoka!

My wife and I were honeymooning on Roatan and, through a series of unfortunate events, ended up without a place to stay. We were recommended to Mayoka through some very cool locals and we couldn't have asked for a happier accident! We stayed with them for almost a week and had a total blast! John and Barbara are attentive, fun, interesting folks who really pay attention to the needs of their clientele.

We were looking for something that was relaxing, slightly off the beaten path with beautiful views and convenient access to everything Roatan has to offer. Boy, did Mayoka pay off in spades. We were on the island for two weeks and stayed in a few different places, Mayoka was our favorite by far. The beach is clean, the snorkeling was great (we saw a sea turtle, several eagle rays and a TON of incredible fish) there's top notch diving right next door and several really phenomenal restaurants literally within eyesight.

Also, if you feel like staying in, Mayoka is great. One night we were tired out from trekking around the island, we stayed in, enjoyed a first-class meal cooked especially for us by Cristal, their chef (who is Cordon Bleu trained, really dynamite!) and then played pool on the ground floor and listened to the ocean. What more can you ask for?

Their support staff (Hi Angel, Hi Maria!) were attentive, industrious and professional. We enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of Mayoka, and you will too. Again, we can't stress enough how fantastic John and Barbara are as well. They are wellsprings of knowledge about the island, unobtrusive and super fun! They also facilitated anything we wanted to do on the island, they've got friends everywhere! Want to go ziplining? They've got it! Want to go to a great bar? They know the bartender! Want live music? They're plugged in to the scene! We were hugging them on our way out the door on the day we left!

We love Mayoka!

Dear Bryce and Anna,
it was a real pleasure to get to know you!
We are still talking of the memorable hours spent listening to you playing John's guitar (thanks again for re-stringing it..)
You are a wonderful couple and wish you all the best in your new adventure together.
We just added safes in all rooms and our new sunset deck will be ready for you when you come back.
The snorkeling continues to be fantastic with this beautiful weather .. just missing you.
We know for sure that you will be back!
Greeting from Roatan

I booked a last minute trip with my sister to Roatan for a long 4 day wkend and this little hotel went above and beyond any expectation that I could have ever had.
The lowdown:
-its location in Sandy Bay is perfect: quiet and isolated, but only a few minutes taxi ride away from West End/West Bay (where most of the cruise ship tourists go).
-The managers, Barbara and John are absolutely outstanding - they seemed genuinely concerned about you having a great stay and went above and beyond to make sure that anything you needed was there for you. Not only that, but they were a lot of fun to spend time with and talk to over an evening cocktail/glass of wine. All of the recommendations that they made were spot on.
-Hotel amenities too numerous to mention but here are a few:
1. Cell phones for each guest to use while on island
2. Kayaks and snorkel gear - the reef is literally a few hundred yards off of the beach in front of the hotel. We would take a kayak out, tie it to one of the buoys and spend the day snorkeling.
3. On premises chef who trained at the NY culinary institute. Different bkfasts are made each morning and you have the option to eat dinner there - Dinners are fantastic (better than anywhere we ate on the island).
4. Fully stocked bar in common room/kitchen
5. Purified water jugs/water dispenser in each room
6. Pool table room, entertainment room on lower level (huge movie collection)
7. Infinity pool with beautiful views of the ocean
8. Staff is really attentive to any need that you may have and a pleasure to interact with

I have travelled extensively all over the world, and I can honestly say that this is one of the best stays that I have ever had anywhere. I can't wait to go back!

Six stars for you both as incredible guests.
