“Illogical that a hotel does not have an air conditioning control for each room”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2011

We decided to go to enjoy the Easter break with my husband and baby of 10 months, so we set aside one month before an air conditioning included but when we arrived we got the surprise that if we wanted to turn off or turn down the air conditioning we had to go to reception to ask "please" the lady in charge, something that any guest would be uncomfortable, good not to get so far in the morning we wanted off the air because the baby is not sleeping in the cold that he felt and did not find no staff for us to turn off the air, it is a shame to not have a control for each room, do not understand why still call deposit of control if not even give us the time to solve the problem the quickest solution was to return the money given ,,, What service! truth and prices related to Q. Indeed 800.00 per night Easter but not both, well I would not be talking about the price if we were giving a good service, since we did booking a month earlier and they would have had us clean room ready with their respective control air conditioning. The negative feedback is to improve their service and their negative attitudes that all they do is drive away tourists.

This hotel is a very clean and well run and managed family operation. Its location is opposite direction of all the other joints, and we found Jonnies place run down nothing great, other than the bar area. The rooms are nice, downstairs across street they have AC, the upstairs are thatched and natural air, with nets. The pool is very nice, and also the menu and dining area. You cant go wrong.

We went for this hotel that was above our normal budget as we were at the end of an 8 month trip round south and central america and just wanted a nice place to chill for a few days before flying home.
Disappointingly however, the hotel was comparable to most backpacker places we've been to. We went for the "budget" room which was $35. This is $15 more than what we normally pay and we normally get a better room than this (in 8 months this room rates as "below average" compared to other places we've been to). The room was dirty (dead cockroaches everywhere and the occasional live one with plenty of ants running around). The room had a ceiling shared with the bar and other rooms meaning that other people can keep you awake at night and the staff can wake you nice and early in the morning when they turn on the restaurant music at 7.30am.
The pool was hidden away behind the hotel in the shade and swarming with mosquitos. Not somewhere you want to hang out. As the hotel is away from the lifeguards the sea isn't too inviting either (with it's extremely dangerous waves and currents) - making the location not ideal.
The deckchairs/sunloungers at the front facing the ocean were nice enough but there were very few of them - meaning they all got reserved in typical english/german style with towels - not the hotels fault I realise.
The food was ok but definitely over-priced. A small bowl of spaghetti was 55Q. A glass bottle of coke would set you back 13Q (11Q plus 10% service charge - they always rounded up) and it was 6Q in the nearby shop for a larger bottle. A simple refill of our 2l water bottle (with warm water) was 9Q when the shop nearby sold a 4l cold bottle for 8Q. Basically you end up feeling very ripped off.
The worst thing about this place is value for money.
Oh, and if you want internet you have a way to walk for it. There are no computers and no wifi here.

Good things: The staff were friendly and helpful, but it was lucky we knew spanish. Nobody spoke english there that we could tell.
The mosquito net covering the bed (absolutely necessary) was good - one of the better ones we've had on our travels and only had one hole.

Overall: There are better places to stay (value for money and quality) if you are a backpacker (just walk along the beach front and you will come across plenty) and definitely better places if you are going over your budget and want a nice hotel. However, it is a perfectly good place to relax and sunbath for a few days if you don't mind no pool and the poor value for money.

My wife and I stayed for one night and were thoroughly impressed with Cafe Del Sol. The hotel is clean, service of the staff is great, and we were impressed with how the management is focused on improving the city and future of the children in Monterrico (we talked with the owner on 2 separate occasions as he checked on how our stay/meals were). The room was perfect and we loved hearing the ocean during the night. The location was great for us because it was far enough away from the louder parts of the beach.

We moved to cafe del sol after a bad experience at another monterrico hotel. It was a completley different world, very relaxing, and we were well looked after by the friendly staff. The beach front restaurant was lovely and food was fresh and delicious. It was a quiet few days when we stayed there but staff did everything to make us feel welcome. We wouldn't stay anywhere else in monterrico.

We came to Monterrico to enjoy the beach and hopefully catch the sea turtles nesting. We accomplished both goals! The staff was amazing. Upon arrival, Irma made sure we had everything we needed and helped to coordinate our activities. We started our first evening with a sunset horseback ride on the beach. It was beautiful!!

We did the The magic 2 for two Nature Adventure Monterrico which included:

2 nights in double room
2 hour guided boat-tour in the mangrove lagunas
2 breakfasts for two
2 hours horse back riding on the beach
2 candlelight dinners for two
2 cocktails for two
We upgraded to a room with air-conditionaing and it was the best $20 we spent! The other rooms are in the open air chicki-hut so there are mosquitoes 24/7. They do provide a mosquito net for sleeping, but we preferred the closed in room with the A/C.

We met the brothers Edgar and Eleozar who took us on the turtle walk at night and the mangrove tour in the morning. They were super friendly, but only speak Spanish. We saw a turtle nesting that night..it was magical! The mangrove tour in the morning was nice, with stops to find nests.

We spent the rest of the time relaxing on the beach and in the hammocks. The food was one of the best parts of the trip. After a week in Antigua, it was nice to escape to a place where everything was in one location. There were also no tv's or telephones, so bring a good book! The hotel is probably the nicest on the beach. The biggest drawback for us was the lack of hot water and the small, hard towels (hand washed and dried on a line). These would be the only improvements I could ask for. I'd highly recommend staying here if you go to Monterrico.

The hotel Café del Sol is really the best place to stay in Monterrico. It's located directly at the wonderful black sand beach. Surrounded by tall palmtrees, lovely construction of the buildings, I felt really relaxed during my whole stay. The staff was always very friendly and helpful! So let me tell you something else, as i arrived at this beautiful place, i thought, well let's try out the kitchen and the food, and i have to say honestly: THE FOOD IS JUST AMAZING!!! A lot of hotels i have been travelled to, like 5 or 4 stars all over the world, they will not have that type of special and tasty food as they have at Café del Sol!
Again, thank you for everything. This place made my holiday to a special memory!
