We drove from Pana to Coban because we had read and heard how beautiful Semuc Champey was - well, we were somewhat disappointed. While the pools are pretty, it is certainly not worth the trip. From Coban it takes almost 2 hours to get to Semuc Champey (very bumpy ride, do not suggest driving yourself unless you have an SUV). We took a tour and had a fun ride in the back of an open jeep (we were covered in dust when we were done!).

The hike to the Mirador is difficult if you are not in shape. It's doable but there are places where it is quite steep. If you go, I definitely suggest hiking to the top because the view from there is really 'the' view. Good place for photos.

Plan on spending some time swimming. But expect to be swimming with lots of other people! :) We went during the week but it was still pretty crowded. I've traveled a lot and this just didn't do it for me.

Savvy travelers wouldn't dream of missing this full-on adventure of spelunking, climbing the mirador, and viewing one of the world's magical places.

Think of basing yourself in Lanquin at the Pousada Hotel instead of the often booked up El Retiro Lodge where the guests and staff can be too cool for school.
