We stayed in the resort with my immediate family, elderly parents and nephew. Overall it was a fabulous place to stayed such a stark contrast from the hustle and bustle of the city. The grounds are well maintained and beach is absolutely stunning. We could thoroughly relax sitting on our terrace admiring the setting. The food was delicious and good value for money. However, we had to change rooms 3 times before we were happy some of the rooms lacked a bit of maintenance. They advertise a gym but it has definitely seen better days. The biggest issues I had with hotel is that they let a couple of the beach boys onto the property who stare at you while you are sunbathing. The rooms aren't luxurious but the grounds makes up for this.

Room Tip: Be picky and prepared to change rooms

We live in Accra and wanted a nice getaway to celebrate our daughter’s 2nd birthday privately as hubby doesn’t like parties. (Wait till she is old enough to know her own mind hubby dear! ☺ )

Err…be prepared for a long review! ☺

Coconut Grove is probably one of the better beach resorts in Ghana. We have been to a few and this one definitely exceeds your expectations if you have been around Ghana and know what the general standards are.

The drive from Accra took us about 4.5 hours as we were a bit lost in Elmina. ☺ Return journey was much shorter though. We stayed for 3 nights and since it wasn’t a long weekend due to a public holiday, roads were ok with not too much traffic.

We booked the junior suite as we heard from some friends that the standard rooms can be slightly dingy. Can’t vouch for that but the junior suite was quite nice. Call the resort and speak to the manager for discounts in off-season. The rooms are built villa-style and there is a sense of space. The design is old-fashioned with smooth concrete flooring and there was a general rustic charm. The junior suite is almost like a small house with a small living room which had a small TV and sofa, a bedroom with a comfortable bed and an almirah, a bathroom, separate WC and a small separate kitchen with a mini refrigerator and a sink. I didn’t find gas/oven/microwave. That would have really helped as I wanted to be able to cook something for my daughter who is still on a limited diet and the restaurant itself is quite pathetic for vegetarians. More on that later! Oh, no telephone either although the website pictures show rooms with telephones in them.

The rooms/villas look nice from outside as well. They are set quite nicely in the huge well-kept gardens. While we were there, I saw several gardeners working on removing weeds, watering the plants etc etc. The lawn/garden area is divided into several segments and you can see several boards telling you who is responsible for the upkeep of that part of the garden including photos of the said gardeners. The garden area alone is beautiful enough to give this resort a very high rating. Yes, there is a golf course within the premises but since I do not play golf I cannot comment on the quality of the course. I have seen some beautiful courses elsewhere and if you ask me this falls way short of the standards.

There are several hammocks around the beach for the guests to relax. Sun loungers are available only near the pool area but maybe they will put them near the beach on request. We never asked. We saw some locals fishing in front of the resort a few times and they gawk at the guests. So, keep that in mind if you like to sun bathe in your swim suits! No harassment though. Don’t let that put you off completely.

The beach is beautiful with a lot of sandy area to play in although some parts of the beach are rocky so I am not sure if it is suitable for swimming. We don’t like to swim in the sea so I can’t give any info on that. Better check with someone before you take the plunge. For swimming, there is a beautiful pool including a kiddie pool so we were quite happy with that. But its not a heated pool so can get quite cold in the rainy season. We went there in July and we couldn’t be in the pool for more than 15 minutes without starting to shiver. My daughter though loves playing in the pool and chattering teeth do not deter her. ☺

The Restaurant : Now that’s the worst part. If you are a non-vegetarian and you like Ghanian dishes, you will not go hungry. If you are a vegetarian, forget about it. Hardly any dishes to choose from. If you are a very picky vegetarian, find another place. The food when presented was tasty but there was so much oil used that both of us suffered from acidity. So don’t forget your medication as I don’t think there are any pharmacies close by and we all know when acidity hits us mostly. In the middle of the night!

As I said we celebrated our daughter’s birthday while we were there and we ordered a cake for her and the restaurant made a ginger flavored cake which was quite nice except for the icing….nothing but loads and loads of sugar. Usually upscale resorts/hotels offer a complimentary birthday cake but not this resort. They charged us. Not that we minded, but still… if there were a proper guest relations manager, I am sure a little girl’s birthday wouldn’t’ have gone unnoticed like that!

The staff: Quite nice and pleasant except for the management that seems to be clueless. While we were checking in there was some confusion as they couldn’t find the keys to our room. We were made to wait a long time in the reception while the staff was running around looking for keys. The manager was sitting right next to us with a very serious expression typing away something and even while she knew that we were being inconvenienced, she only scolded the staff but never once came and talked to us. Just a ‘hello and welcome to our resort and we are sorry for the inconvenience’ would have been a nice gesture. Again, maybe I am expecting too much?

Animals: Yes, animals! There are some cages in the garden where they have some birds, bunnies and a monkey. They have sheep, goats, chicken, peacocks, a donkey and several horses behind the resort accessible from behind the junior suites. There are many vultures on the golf course as well. They have a fish pond ( we didn’t see any fish though, even when we threw in bread). They have several crocodiles too. They liked the bread. :p Anyway, my daughter loved visiting these animals everyday. I mention this in this review for the benefit of people traveling with small kids. Your kids will love them.

So all in all, it was a very pleasant break and we did not have any problems to spoil our holiday. The resort is beautiful and I did not find any eye sores. So if the resort improved on its food I would not hesitate to give it a 5/5. As it is, I cannot give it more than 4/5.

You are welcome to write to me if you need any specifics! Happy Holidays! ☺

Room Tip: Junior suites are good if you like some space. There is one which is right at the edge of the beach...

We decided to take a road trip and ended up here. We had the honeymoon package, flowes n petals all decorated on the bed with chocolate and champagne. Room was big, clean n neat. Free breakfast buffet, lunch n dinner was on time n cheaper than i expected.. From the receptionist, to the cooks n housekeepers were great. We had the Bangalow facing the ocean n it was more than I expected. Emails to the manager was fast n precise.
Just wish they would complete the road.

as we arrived there without reservation we were glad there were free rooms.

after a misunderstanding at the front desk at the check in after payment we had to call the manager who was very friendly and solved our problem on avery efficient way. Thanks again.

The bungalows are located 100 meters from the sea separated by a nice garden, staff is very friendly. Do not expect to much from the rooms this is very basic, two beds, a (big) shower a TV (5channels) and that's it... Very basic, but very ok and very clean! There is a terrace at the front of every bungalow and there is the golf (not tested) at the back.

The restaurant is situated close to the pool and the beach, the menu list is nice. we waited for about one hour to get the starters (there were max 15 pax in total in the restaurant) then another 30 minutes to get the main course. Starters were excellent, main courses were terrible...After dinner you can go and walk on the beach and here starts the best part...just amazing those waves on the rocks....
A/C is available but was not needed that night.

Conclusion, basic and clean hotel, i think a bit expensive for what it is. (but you'll surely get a better rate if you book upfront)

Room Tip: Bungalows seems nicer than the biggest rooms at the back

Rooms are average . Don't expect much with regards to the quality of the rooms. Aircon was broken and hotel lacks maintenance culture .

Go for the beach .

Incredibly safe beach for kids to play in the sand . very empty on the weekend we went . we were virtually on the beach alone for the best part of our visit . Food is good and reasonable and staff very courteous

Room Tip: Go for the beach

Visited with a group and found the hotel comfortable and clean, and good for the locale. Hot water is in somewhat limited supply, so take showers at different times of the day if you are sharing a room. Air conditioning was up to date as was the TV. The dinners get a bit monotonous, rice, pasta, fried plantains, french fries, fish and chicken, mixed vegetables in some combination most nights, at least for a large group. Ordering off the menu the food is supposed to be much better. Breakfasts were very satisfactory. The bar only accepts local currency, so change some money before coming here. Also plan on tipping the porters with local currency as they were unhappy with U.S. dollars. The staff is friendly and helpful with the exception of the reception area. Plan on swimming in the pool, not the ocean here since it is rough with rocky outcroppings. If you are visiting the local castles and forts, you could consider this hotel for a night or two. The sound of waves crashing on the beach makes this a calming place, as do the spacious grounds shaded with coconut palms.

Room Tip: Quite a bit of variability in the rooms so try to get a more modern one.
