“Great Bungalows, Great Garden, Great Value”

Marks Place Moorea

Jun 25, 2008

While my wife and I were planning a trip to Moorea, a friend recommended Mark's Place Moorea. We did some research, but after reading some of the reviews on Tripadvisor, we started to have second thoughts - some of the reviews sounded terrible. So I contacted my friend again, and he reassured me that he really enjoyed his stay here a few years ago.
We're sure glad we followed his advice. We stayed at Marks Place for 7 nights in June 2008. The bungalows are all clean and made from natural timber and stone, and have a great feel to them - great for relaxing and escaping the rat race. They're located in a lovely grassed garden full of trees and shrubs, set well back from the road. We stayed in the honeymoon bungalow "Fare Fetia" , located in a secluded spot and perfect for couples. It has a self-contained kitchen separated from the bedroom by a small garden and outdoor chair.
Bikes, kayaks, flippers and googles can be hired, and it looked like most island activities can be organised from the front desk. Mark was super friendly and helpful during our stay, giving us advice on things to do, organised a rental scooter for a day to see the island, drove us back to the ferry dock and even organised a hire car for us on Tahiti for the following week. - much appreciated.
Marks Place does not provide meals and guests must self cater - all the buglaows looked like they had a kitchen - and there are a couple of shops nearby that sell basic groceries for meals. We enjoyed getting on the bikes and riding up to pick up fresh baguettes and fruit from the shops and street stalls.
Theres a good swimming beach a 10 minute bike ride away, and theres a great surfing wave just across the road, accessed by taking a kayak to the reef.
Haapiti is a very quiet part of the island, a fair distance from the major resorts and restaurants, so if your after nighclubs and bars, your better off staying elswhere. But if your after a quiet and beautiful place to chill out and your happy to walk , ride bikes and settle into a relaxed routine, Marks Place is the perfect escape and great value.

“A family-friendly ambience”

My job takes me to Moorea sometimes and I always stay at Mark’s Place, for good reasons. Not only is the site beautifully and imaginatively laid out in a secluded spot and scrupulously maintained, but the accommodation itself - quality bungalows - has been designed and built with a perceptive sympathy and understanding towards the potential needs and wishes of clients. All are built with the best available local materials by Mark himself. Since I was last time I stayed there has been an upgrading programme with renewal of old, and construction of new, bungalows. The ambience now is more family-friendly. Mark’s Place is Wi-Fi wired and every bungalow is equipped with satellite TV in addition to all the facilities that would be expected in better quality accommodation, though at affordable (by the standards of French Polynesia) prices. Mark, I believe, has lived on Moorea for nearly 30 years and so is in a position to give advice about every kind of activity - whether it is on the beach, in the mountains or the lagoon - and this he does freely and helpfully. There is a shop about 5 minutes walk away where all the basics can be purchased so you can cook on site or, if you prefer, there are other places to eat. Moorea is not a huge island and so anything that you want should not be too far away, though the bus service could be a lot better. That said, you can hire bikes on site or Mark can arrange other transport if required. I know Moorea pretty well and the accommodation has a tendency to be either second-rate budget or camping sites, or insanely expensive hotels. Mark’s Place is the only place I know that caters for those on a limited budget but who want better quality accommodation and facilities. Highly recommended.

Iran is wrongfully called Axis of Evil -- you'll understand once arriving at Mark's Place 'Hell'. The photo is artistically crafted in Photoshop. As you arrive in this supposedly cheerful paradise location, you immedialy notice its complete absence from that wonderful beach Mark has promised you will enjoy nearby. Not only that -- the rooms are a total dump if you compare with other places in Moorea. The man's a sweet-talker, so please don't give into his magic. We did, and ended up hitch-hiking away from the 'paradisus horriblis' on our first day in Moorea. So -- stay away by all means!

Management Response
MarksPlace, Owner
(Management representative)

I have been in the hospitality industry for over 10 years. Each year I have thousands of very happy customers at my pension loving the uniqueness of my bungalows and grounds. This customer review is defamatory and slanderous, and in respects of the criticism of my business, quite incorrect.

No picture on my web site is Photoshoped and all pictures reflect my accommodation and environment perfectly. To suggest my Bungalows are dumps is so far from the truth it’s laughable. They are what my customers really like about my place. The open design, the fact they are hand crafted in wood and in perfect synergy with the surrounding environment, generates favourable comments from my customers on a regular basis.

No where on my web site do I suggest my Pension is on the beach. Quite to the contrary, it’s apparent if you click on the map on the home page and the resulting Google Earth map shows quite clearly I’m 200 yards from the coastal road.

I’m not going to get into a personal slanging match with the reviewer in respects of the personal attack on myself but close off from my response with the statement that there are 2 sides to every story and I remember this customer very clearly.

“Okay for the price”

Marks Place Moorea

Feb 25, 2008

I stayed at Mark's two days and one night in Dec 2006. I was in a decent cabin with one big bedroom, with bunks for about 8 people, depending upon how many slept in one bed. It had a kitchen with pots, etc., and flush toilets and showers, and mosquito nets for the beds, so it was fine for me.

It is rather isolated, so I advise to either rent a car at the dock, or hitch-hike. Mark was very helpful to me and others regarding where the good snorkeling spots were, etc. Given the nature of the place, i.e., basically a hostel, I would not expect any help "booking" anything. The price was about $20 to $25 US as I recall, which is dirt cheap compared to a hotel room on Moorea. I have no idea how other hostels may compare.

“A true paradise”

Marks Place Moorea

Dec 1, 2007

Had a fantastic time...great budget location for camping...only need your tent...Mark's set up for kitchen was great...helped cut down on the need to bring cookgear/stove. Grocery within walking distance. Also cabins/bungalows for those who want to spend the money - looked nice. Bikes for rent also to go further around the island - for full ride around island...get one with a good seat! Mark and family super! All locals were great.
