“Fantastic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2013

We had a lovely beach front garden bungalow with some pretty good snorkelling. The hotel was lovely, the service was fantastic and the weather was so warm!!!! Any excursions we needed were immediately organised by the people at the activities desk. Moorea Sofitel is a great place for a lovely relaxing hotel beside a beautiful beach, and I would go back there again.

Room Tip: If you are not going over the water choose a deluxe bungalow which is on the beach front

This was the first stop on our honeymoon. I had heard great things about Moorea and our travel agent was able to get us a good rate at the Sofitel. This is 4 star hotel but definitely more like a 4+ star hotel. The checkin process is a bit disorganized. Usually a whole group comes in at the same time from the airport for checkin so the reception is scrambling around trying to get people to fill out the paperwork but once that's completed it's paradise.

We were upgraded to their standard overwater bungalows. The location is great, there seem to be breakwaters further out so this prevents large waves from coming into this lagoon which is why they are able to have some beautiful coral around the bungalows. Unlike Bora Bora, Moorea seems to be less windy, at least the season we were there so next time we might consider booking a premium bungalow further out on the pontoon. Keep in mind that the further out you go, the deeper the water. The rooms themselves are okay. These bungalows are smaller than any 5 star resort you'd stay at but that's the price you pay for a larger bungalow. There's a nice little glass floor window that allows you to see the marine life underneath and a small deck as well that was split into two levels with a shower by the steps to swim in their lagoon.

Our package came with a free breakfast buffet every morning which was a nice touch. Its a pretty standard western breakfast at the Pure restaurant. There's an omelet station and there's your usual pancakes, sausages, bacon, etc. This will probably be the same restaurant you'll go for lunch and dinner if you decide to stay on the resort. There isn't much of an option other than the K restaurant which requires a reservation.

For dinner your have the option of Pure or K if you decide to stay on the resort. Pure is the main restaurant that has the buffet or a la carte option. You also get a dinner show which is fun. Buffet prices will vary from 5500-6500 xpf we found depending on what they were serving that night. K restaurant is their reservation restaurant and is on a sand floor. The food was good and it's a bit more of an intimate setting but definitely pricier. If you're on an anniversary or honeymoon you might want to check it out once but if you don't you won't be missing out on too much either.

For activities, the activities desks will help you book and coordinate all your watersports, sightseeing and even car rentals. They have preferred vendors but even if the preferred vendors are all booked usually they can go outside their preferred vendors and create a booking for you. Transportation will still be arranged but payment will have to be done with the vendor directly instead of through your total resort bill at the end. A nice perk is the snorkeling gear if you didn't bring your own. The resort provides towels and snorkel gear free of charge and you can keep these at your room so if you decide to even go off property you can use your snorkel gear.

Overall this is a great resort. Moorea is a beautiful island, definitely recommend a car rental. All you need is a 4 hour rental and you can circle the island... twice! Visit the local grocers for drinks and snacks, you'll save a fortune because whenever you ask for water here you'll get bottled water which isn't free. Whenever I find my way back to FP I'd definitely consider Sofitel again.

This was our first stop in French Polynesia after a short stay in Tahiti .

The Sofitel is on the beautiful Temae beach facing Tahiti , it's the best beach there is in Moorea (there is some snorkelling to do in front of the hotel although not exceptional).

It’s a lovely resort with bungalows laid in the gardens and along the beach. A few bungalows are overwater. We felt it wasn’t worth paying extra for an overwater bungalow since the lagoon is not so great compared to Bora Bora and had not regrets. Our deluxe beach bungalow was right by the white sandy beach, a few meters away from the water. The bungalows are nicely decorated and come with a shaded terrace. Ours had a great view on the turquoise water...We also liked that there are a lot of small trees and flowers all around the bungalows, it gives a truly tropical feel to the hotel. Also the bungalows are not too close to each other so you have some privacy while on your terrace. Just beware that the regular beach bungalows are behind the overwater ones, not such a good view. Make sure you book a deluxe beach bungalow…

We didn’t try the gourmet restaurant (looked empty all the time ?) and did the buffet restaurant only once for the Polynesian buffet: good food (including lobster!), some cooked in a Polynesian oven, and a dance show at the end of the diner. The beach bar is nice, good food for lunch or a light dinner and good cocktails.

As a conclusion, we had a pretty good time at the Sofitel, it’s a great beach resort and probably the best in Moorea. By the way we did visit the Intercontinental while going to the Dolphin center and it looked so old and tired compared to the Sofitel…would have hated staying there.

The +: the deluxe beach bungalows are truly lovely, and such great views of the lagoon
only 5 minutes away from the airport (but the planes don’t fly in front of the hotel, you won’t see/hear them at all)

The - : it’ll take more time to go to the different excursions that are available as most depart from the north of Moorea (but still worth it since the hotel is so nice)
The bungalows are only available at 2:00 p.m., there is no option for early check-in (but you can have a spare room to have a shower while waiting for your bungalow)

Room Tip: The Deluxe Beach bungalows are the best with their beachfront location. The OWB are not worth it com...

I just got back from an utterly fantastic trip to Tahiti. My 4 night stay in Mo'orea at the Sofitel was utterly superb. The service was second to none, from the moment I arrived to the moment I left. Agata Ravolet, from guest services, was the most delightful hotel employee I have ever dealt with. She arranged all manner of excursions, and had the most helpful advice. The diving was the best I have done (better than The Bay Islands - Honduras, Caye Caulker - Belize, Sharm el Sheikh - Egypt, and Waikiki - Hawaii). Etienne and Nicolas, at the Ia Ora dive shop, were the best dive masters I have had. Etienne was particularly patient, and generous. He turned the boat around 5 times on one dive to see 3 pods of dolphins, 1 group of eagle rays, and retrieve a forgotten camera. The only complaint I have with this hotel is that their website does them a huge disservice. The property is gorgeous, and you would never know that from their website. As such I have attached a number of pictures. I hope this gives anyone booking with them a better idea of what they can expect.

We are just back from our honeymoon and we cannot be happier for having spent half of it at the Sofitel ia Ora beach resort. From the moment we stepped in we were welcomed with kindness by the personnel which went beyond their duty to make us feel comfortable. The people at the front desk and this at the tours office were very helpful. We had to spend an extra night because our flight to Bora Bora was cancelled due to bad weather, but we were helped to rearranged the transports and the new flight (thanks so much!!!). We booked a water bungalow and this was the best choice for us because we could snorkel at our pleasure having direct access the corals next to the water bungalows. These are the best corals we have seen (we snorkeled in the carabbean sea several times) with lots of beautiful fish! The rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable. The resort feels like a botanic garden and it is very relaxing. There are two restaurants and they both serve excellent food. Spend a dinner at the K restaurant if you can because it will be an unforgettable experience. There will be a Polynesian dancing show in both every night. The one at the Pure restaurant will start at 7.30pm and last about 45 min. It is very enjoyable and different every night!
The place and the personnel make this resort one of the best accomodation you can ask for your honeymoon or just for a special trip.

Room Tip: Get a water bungalow and explore the corals next to them.

CustomTahiti Travel was wonderfully easy to work with on the planning of this trip. The Sofitel is very beautiful, quaint and quiet! Yet, they have just about every option and opportunity one requires of a French Polynesian vacation. While we didn't have an overwater bungalow on this leg of our trip, we certainly didn't need one. The staff is amazing and very accommodating. We had amazing views of everything from our lagoon bungalow..the beach was not too crowded. I believe it to be the best spot on Moorea!
