As with most hotels in sharm the Oriental is suffering from age related shabbiness.
Had 10 nights here (1st Dec -11th dec) and I must say the negative reviews have some credance but not to the extent that i would recommend you avoid the Hotel.
If you look close enough you will see cracked bath tiles , dried food on dining tables and sunbeds that have physically seen better days. However i must admit that the staff more than make up for the tired hotel by being attentive , friendly and professional .
The food at both breakfast and lunch was more than sufficient in both variety and quality, however evening meals have less choice to the point of there being 3 Italian nights in 10 days .
The food on offer was plentiful in most cases. I believe that the food was plentiful and the staff attentive as a result of the hotel being only 45% full.
The pools are tired but clean and well maintained. The front pool being a little quiet gem undiscovered due to a lack of entertainment.
Rooms were cleaned daily to an acceptable standard . we stayed in the older block and felt no need to upgrade, even when the hot water took ten minutes to come thro and was then yellow in colour.Towels and bedding changed regularly and although there were no towel gaiters or arrangements we were more than satisfied.
Dining room staff were a credit to the Hotel and although I do not usually name and shame I feel it is warranted on this occassion. The waiters to the left of the room Mohammed x 2 and Mahmoud(Billy) were exceptional at making the dining experience pleasurable and entertaining. Never , was there a hint of Tippy Tippy as is the norm in Sharm and when i did tip on our final day it was greeted with gratitude and surprise which I felt was genuine.
My only real concern was the nightly practice of fumagating the complex at approx 5pm. the chemicals stank the place out and caught us out the first night after leaving the balcony door open . The room smelt like a diesel truck stop for what seemed like ages. however once bitten etc.
We celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary whilst at the oriental on the same day as the Beach Party(Tues) . £10 each to attend and turned out to be quite a memorable evening due to my son and partner who travelled with us arranging and very public belly dance lesson for myself and a last dance type spot light for my wife and I plus a cake . The staff involved from animation to arrangement were amazing in this respect . we were given pride of place for the show and waited on hand and foot.
If you have a special occassion during your stay I recommend you email Amira at the hotels web site who will respond and arrange something to commemorate your occassion.
This is our third time in Sharm and each hotel has had good and bad at all levels to the point where I have stated " I will not return" and then do exactly that.
Very few hotels in Sharm will , I suspect , make the 5 star rating and those that do probably charge accordingly.
Considering the price you pay I believe it to be value for money compared to a damp December in the Uk.
The only real downside to the resort is the Trip company on the beach. AARON WAVES.
Booked several trips with this small cowboy unit.Foolishly I paid upfront for them all .Tired and damaged quads and hurried mix and match shows. one 5 in 1 trip Quads/Bedouin show/ star gazing meant we HURRIEDLY swapped groups 3 times . The glass bottom boat was positively dangerous .Badly maintained boats and very very poor health and safety to the point were a crew member fell in the sea.
There seemed to be a " Weve got your money now clear off attitude"
I was asked several times by the owner how much I had paid, which made me think someone was skimming the profits , You know who you are Ahmed.
I SUGGEST GIVING THEM A WIDE BIRTH . Book with your rep , the trips are the same price and I know from previous experience that they are better organised and much safer .
As with all of sharms Hotels the invasion from Eastern Block countries leaves its mark and the Oriental is no exception .
Bolshy Russians and Ukraines still have no concept of queing and manners . The staff do their best to mediate these situations by monitoring situations to minimise any awkwardness and in some instances offering lessons in humility ie "Theres a queue"
The staff clearly have their hands full with the relentless impoliteness and lack of understanding.
Little or no personal issues with them , for a change .
All in all a pleasant holiday , my expectations were already set from previous trips to Sharm and I wasnt disappointed.
