I happened across Western Desert tours by accident but decided to contact them to see if they could take us from Cairo to Luxor through the desert. Khaled the owner and operator contacted us promptly with an itinerary for 5 days and 4 nights. I was a little apprehensive at first but it sounded too good an opportunity to pass up - so off we went. Khaled organised a transfer from Cairo to Bahariya Oasis where we met him and his offsider/cook Gomaa. My husband and I spent the first afternoon with Khaled, Gomar and his adorable daughter Nada with a tour of the Bahariya Oasis before spending the night at the Old Oasis Inn which was great before heading off the next day.
If you like being away from everyone and everything and you like a bit of off road adventure then this is for you. The whole trip is very laid back - there is no rush to do anything - just sit back and enjoy the stunning scenery. We stopped regularly for short walks and hikes, tea, the odd swim in various springs along the way, and visits to some local attractions. Other times we didnt see or go near anyone. Every afternoon we would stop in time for sunset and set up our camp in some remote part of the desert - a different landscape every night.
One of the best things about the whole trip is probably the amazing food they freshly prepare for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I still can't get over how Gomaa can cook such stunning meals in a tiny camp kitchen out in the desert. He made lovely fresh fruit salad, home made soups, grilled chicken over the camp fire, fried fish, fabulous egg plant dips, tuna salad, pasta, casseroles just to name a few.
It is beautiful to sleep outside under the stars at night and just watch the shooting stars fall from the sky before waking each morning to a beautiful sunrise and another gorgeous day. The landscape changes so much and is truly beautiful.
We were very comfortable, felt very safe and Khaled is a very safe driver and knows the desert intimately. We even spent a few hours and lunch with his friends in Farafra Oasis which was great to meet a local family and see how they live.
All in all a great experience and definately a highlight of our 5 week holiday. A great way to chill out for a few days and get away from it all!! Thanks very much. Caroline and Darren.
