On a tour through Ecuador last winter i was able to stop and stay several nights in the city of Riobamba. I had been reading up on the internet about the hospitality provided by the staff and family of the hotel Abraspungo so i booked my time there at the 'hosteria Abraspungo,' and it was everything i expected. The Inn iitself is nestled a good distance from the center of the city but not excessively far either. The entrance of the hotel provides a cobblestone path and driveway which exposes the main building of the hosteria with all the bedroom suites scattered on periphery of the property, tucked in with gardens and flowers indigenous to ecuador. The main building , which is a handcrafted wooden masterpiece designed by the owners, is the focal point of the Inn which provides a common room, restaurant and bar both stocked with wines from around the world, and live entertainment throughout the week during dinner hours. The menu is exquisite and the waitstaff top notch. As you walk through the back half of the building, you're thrown outside as the Inn has an indoor/outdoor transition that goes unnoticed. it's as if the building were part of the land itself, and not just an erected structure sitting on the ground. you'll see a decorative theme of an Ecuador flong forgotten as you procede throughout the pathways that wonder the landscape. The rooms, which are more individual tiny houses than rooms, are really cool, each equiped with large windows that show the mountains in the background. The ceilings are elevated with wooden beams supporting the roof, and the bathroom was spacious and odorned with ornate tiles.
Chimborazo and Altar are the two mountains seen from the property, of which can be toured by setting up an excursion with the frontdesk/staff. I spent one afternoon, just me and the tour guide from the hotel, riding up the base of Chimborazo, and another whole day riding a donkey up the cliffs of Altar with two other staff members who were eager to show me the beautiful scenery. Also, 'the devil's nose' or 'la nariz del diablo' is a train ride that leaves from the station in Riobamba and tours the countryside of Ecuador, throughout the farm lands and mountains that follow some rivers and lakes in this region. This too can be set up through the hotel abraspungo with ease. There are staff on hand that speak english and who are willing to provide pretty much anything you desire. Without a doubt, it was a place i wont forget and my stay here really made my trip incredible.
