“What a cozy place!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2012

My stay in Riobamba was to have been just a day; however this clean, cute and cozy hostal changed my mind about staying here longer. The antique adobe building with many rooms adorned with stained glass window and door are just so adorable. The hostal has a nice garden often visited by hummingbirds. It's namesake is quite befitting; an oasis indeed, in the midst of Riobamba's hustle and bustle.

Room Tip: Ask for the rooms with stained glass doors/windows.

I was going to Riobamba alone and wanted to have a room booked before I got there and hostal oasis was the only one I could find. I was under the assumption that rooms cost 10$ a night which is not the case. For a private room with bathroom ifs 15$ a night. Beautiful courtyard area with a covered outdoor kitchen. Breakfast is not included and wifi costs a dollar a day. The rooms were very nice, just out of a poor backpackers (like me) budget

We cannot understand the few negative comments in some of the reviews. This hostal/hotel is friendly, clean, has powerful hot showers, a super comfortable bed and attractive seating areas both in an outer courtyard and an indoor lounge with fireplace. After staying in chilly, unheated hostals at this altitude we have delighted in building the fire and being cozy each afternoon and evening. The kitchen is basic but adequate to cook full meals, which we have enjoyed doing following trips to the several nearby markets. At $10 pp + $1 wifi per night this place is true value for money. And we have had our room cleaned and fresh towels at no extra cost.

The Hostal is located on a quiet and safe area. 20$ for a double room with private bathroom.

The decoration is a bit cheap, with carpet on the toilets, statues of dolphins etc..

They have couple of animals but if you don't mind to have dogs jumping on you, it is ok.

Beds are ok. Kitchen is a a bit small but you can still manage to cook a bit. Have a small TV in your room.

Worst point is the cleaning policy, where you have to PAY 10$ TO HAVE YOUR ROOM CLEANED. Yes, you have read correctly. and this is not a joke. So if you plan to stay on a long term at Riobamba, this is not really a good option.
This is the first time I can see this I think that it is the stupiest rule EVER. So just for this, they would deserve to be rated 1/5.

On top of that, service is not super, and if you are looking for some advices about the area, this is not really the good place either. It looks like the family prefers to take care of their pets than their customers.
We were trying to have Wifi, for 1$ / day, but the guy who was supposed to give us the code couldn't remember it, and didn't care to look for it...

Dear Guest.

Thank You very much for the valuable time on the critical issue of the hostel.

Really sorry that your stay was not as enjoyable as it should.

I apologize on behalf of the hotel and my family for the problems caused during your stay.

Taken into account their valuable comments cleansing policies changed from his criticism, not charged any value for the cleaning service and to obtain fresh towels.

The internet sevice was improved thanks to the valuable contribution he bought a router or switch high-performance Internet and could put a key that is not hard to remember for our staff.

Once again I ask to please accept my apologies, to return to Riobamba, do not hesitate to contact me personally to meet their stay.

May your travels around the world go for the best.

Best regards.

Fantastic hostal. Helpful and friendly owners, very clean and nice big rooms with private bathrooms which were spotless. No breakfast provided but stocked and clean kitchen and dining area for self catering. Safe part of town within walking distance of shops, plazaz, markets and restaurants. Would highly recommend it.

We really enjoyed this hostal. It was very clean and comfortable. There was free wi-fi that worked well in our room. The hostal is run by a friendly and helpful family. We paid USD $20 for a room with a queen bed, private bathroom and hot water.

$10 per person for a double room with private bathroom & hot water ( the water was hot when you had the water pressure low).

Overall this hostel is lovely. The rooms surround an outside patio/courtyard with chairs and tables for you to sit at. This is exactly what you need in Riobamba as there is not much to keep your attention in the town, so to be able to sit outside comfortably at your hostel is perfect.

There is a kitchen, great for the budget traveller. It is small but when we stayed the hostel was quiet so we had it to ourselves. If the hostel was busy I could see it being a little too small.

This is a good hostel but they do have some very strange extra costs, which doesn't fit with your normal hostel. If you want your room/bathroom cleaned, so lets say the rubbish bin emptied or new towels, you have to pay $10 extra to have this done IF you have been there for under 7 days. It seemed really strange especially because in Ecuador you cannot put the toilet paper down the toilet so you have to put in into the rubbish bin. Therefore this is something that needs to be cleaned and emptied at most every 2 days, but at this hostel they don't do it. If you want it done you have to pay extra!! $10 is definitely the most I would be willing to pay for this room and I feel it is definitely a fair price to have cleaning included!!! Also the toilet bin is tiny and with two people sharing the room..........not nice!

Another hidden cost they have is that you have to pay for the WiFi. I have never come across any hostel/bungalow..... in my 3 years of travels where you have to pay for the WiFi when you are using your own laptop/iPod. I would expect this from a snotty, expensive hotel but not from a hostel. The cost isn't huge but it's just not normal or nice especially when the hostel has the wifi turned on all the time anyway AND the room is $10 per person!!

Due to the strange extra hidden costs I've not given this hostel 5 stars. I think this hostel is between the average and very good rating because of these extra costs. But as there is no in-between rating I've listed it as average.

Riobamba info:

The scenic tourist train definitely does not go from Riobamba anymore. SO if that's all you had planned for Riobamba, I wouldn't stop off in this town. There is really not much to see or do in Riobamba, it is not a very nice town. I stayed in Riobamba just to rest after a long bus journey and because of the nice outdoor courtyard at the hostel I stayed two nights.
