“Overpriced, unimpressed”

Hotel Dona Esther

Let me start by saying I understand hostals are very basic hotels and you trade off some hotel comforts for a better price. I also understand Dona Esther's intent on "rustic and historic". Finally, I am generally a pretty simple needs guy on my accommodations. That said, I was very unimpressed and only stayed one night of an expected 3-4 day stay. Frankly, I only stayed one night because I paid for it. There were two very large concerns: 1) the locks on the rooms are supposed to be "historic" but far too basic to inspire a sense of security to your room, and 2) the very strong smell of mold or mildew in the bathroom.

Additionally, their restaurant - while food was fine seemed too much of being in a cavelike atmosphere.

Dona Esther is overpriced compared to other locations within a block of this hostal. I moved to Santa Fe hotel, saved $9/night and had a far more modern and comfortable stay.

To Dona Esther's credit, they did offer to move me to another room when I was going to check out but at that point it was too late.

You can't discuss taste, of course, you're never obliged to chose our hotel.

I think I'm entitled to say that this client did not even bother to inform us about any inconvenience but was simply checking out in the morning, dispite his reservations. If you're not sure about which hotel you are going to chose, please don't reserve and come to have a look first.

We never had any such complaints, as you can see from the reactions of other clients and if anything might be disturbing a guest in a room, it will be solved immediately. Maybe the very cheap price in the other hotel was more important to this client.

“Lovely Hostal Doña Esther”

Beautiful quiet rooms, ours was spacious and simple, spotless. Wonderful staff, run by a young Dutch couple, great pizzas at their restaurant. Great breakfasts, not sure if included in the price. We found the staff exceptionally friendly and helpfull. Very close to the market and beautiful church around the corner. Lovely view from roof terraces. There are interior stairs to climb.

“An oasis of quiet”

We really enjoyed our stay here and ended up staying several days longer than we had planned. The room was spacious, clean, had a view from the balcony, and was above all quiet. I hadn't expected that in such a busy and noisy town. The staff weren't always as helpful or as friendly as i would have liked and the restaurant was dark, which we found unwelcoming. But all in all, we were pleased with the accommodations.

“An exceptional place to stay in Otavalo”

Hotel Dona Esther

My family used to live in Otavalo and when I and my wife were planning our visit I knew I wanted to stay near the main square. I have to say that everything about Dona Esther was great. The hotel itself is very nice and the courtyard, though small, offers a quiet contrast to the bustle of the town. Our room, on the second floor, was very clean and after four days felt like home.

The staff was very kind and was always available for questions or help. The food at the first floor restaurant is superb, they make a fine locro and their pizzas are very tasty. The canelaso ( a warm drink made with rum and cane sugar syrup) is not to be missed. The kitchen was clean and the fruit always fresh.

There was some issue with early morning noise, as guests left to catch early buses and bit of kitchen noise, since the door and windows are not acoustically sealed. But the disturbances soon passed. I would whole heartedly recommend Dona Esther to anyone going to Otavalo.

We stayed only one night so that we would be here early for the markets. Room and hotel were okay, but food was only so so in the resturant. I thought the whole market scene was overrated. I have certainly been to better ones. The town does not seem to have enough bars and resturants. We could not find a decent place to eat or have breakfast. I will say that I was standing outside this hotel and a gentleman grabbed my suitcase and took off. The hotel has been great about trying to help. Hotel was okay, town was a zero.
