I have visited Otavalo every year since the mid-90's & have found a true GEM of a hotel in the Hotel Ali Shungu. I do business in Otavalo & the location of the hotel is ideal for both visiting the famous Saturday market as well as the other shops in town during the rest of the week. It's an easy 3-4 block walk to the busy Plaza de Ponchos & yet when you return to the hotel, all is peaceful & quiet.
The rooms are a good value -- impeccably clean, comfortable beds, plenty of wool blankets, & even an electric heater on request. I believe ALL rooms look out over the gorgeous patio/gardens.
The service is friendly, helpful, & courteous. Most of the employees are Indigenous people & wear their native dress. Just ask at the reception & they will help you plan hikes & day trips, even rent a taxi for the day with the always-friendly Fabian.

The food in the gourmet restaurant canNOT be beat!! Last year I arrived in Otavalo ill, having picked up a parasite in India. Once the parasites were gone, I ate NOWHERE except the Ali Shungu. There is nowhere else you can be as certain of clean, well-prepared, delicious food & at a reasonable price. It's certainly possible to eat more cheaply in Otavalo, but do so AT YOUR OWN RISK!

My favorite time of day in Otavalo is late afternoon -- I return "home" to the Ali Shungu, choose a window table in the restaurant, order a cup of freshly brewed filter coffee & catch up with my emails at the free computer provided to guests. Birds are singing in the garden, trees & plants are soaking up the late afternoon sunshine, & all is well.

Our room at Ali Shungu was the nicest we encountered on our trip. The coffee was the best I've had in Ecuador (Starbucks quality -- and price, however). The garden and grounds are very inviting. The owners and staff very friendly and helpful -- one gentleman got up at 5:30am (or earlier) on our last day to serve us that wonderful coffee and rolls free on our last day before flying out. The only negative in my opinion is the restaurant prices, which are comparable to those in the US -- but you don't have to eat there.

Spent 2 nights at Ali Shungu whilst visiting Otavalo. The main reason for going to Otavalo was to see the markets and the hotel is situated easy walking distance. I loved the authentic decorations and the welcoming restaurant with fire for the cold nights and the pretty garden with some colourful birds. Wouldn't hesitate in recommending this hotel.

Frank is an old friend of mine, yet my comments are authentic: Ali Shungu Hotel, as well as the Mountain Lodges, are by far the BEST in the entire region. Even if some people consider the restaurant(s) steeply fared, or have other minute qualms, I think the overall attention one gets from the owners is insuperable. For that reason I consider Frank's place one that has to continue functioning. It stands as an example for the other establishments in the region.

On our recent Ecuador trip, my wife and I spent a wonderful four days in Otavalo at the Ali Shungu Hotel. The hotel is located within easy walking distance of both the fabled, Saturday animal market and the Indian crafts market. The rooms are clean, quiet and beautiful; each contains exceptional woven South American wall-hangings and rugs. For those trying to "decompress" from too many electronic gadgets, the absence of both room phones and TVs is a blessing. Owners Frank and Margaret are a delight; if you stay at Ali Shungu, you should try to spend time talking with them about their 30 years of Ecuadorian life. We can’t comment on the food at the Ali Shungu restaurant because we chose instead to sample the many cafes in town. This was probably a mistake because the downtown food was not very good. Note that Ali Shungu has the best coffee in Otavalo. If we ever visit Otavalo again, we would definitely stay at Ali Shungu.
