“Wonderful base for exploring Otovalo area”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2013

My family and I spent a wonderful week at Hacienda Cusin over New Years. We loved the beautiful gardens, the spacious rooms with lovely furnishings. The food was delicious (love those Ecuadorian soups!), and every night we returned to our rooms to find a fire in the fireplace and a hot water bottle in the bed- heavenly. The staff were all friendly and helped us set up visits to many of the interesting places nearby- Otovalo market, a town with beautiful leather goods and another with all kinds of handcarved woodwork. They also organized our visit to the cloud forest where we saw beautiful birds including the incongruously named Cock of the Rock. We hiked and biked all right from the Cusin property. New Years Eve was wondrously festive with dancing and fireworks after dinner. There is so much to do in the area, but Cusin is also a lovely place just to lounge around and enjoy. We stayed several nights in El Monasterio, which is right next door, and then switched to a room at Cusin- El Duenita, which would be a fabulous room for parents traveling with a child since it has a bed and loft over the sitting room. I would highly recommend either site. Muchas gracias to all the staff for their kindness and helpfulness during our visit.

My husband and I stayed here whilst touring the area. We arrived with our Guide and Driver during a very heavy rainstorm, and were met at the car with umbrellas. On being shown around we were impressed with the way the owner has restored and furnished the Hacienda, it really is a special place to stay.

Our room was large, beautifully furnished, very comfortable, cosy, and clean, and a fire was immediatly lit to help us dry out.

The bathroom was roomy and very clean, with a good selection of toiletries.

Breakfast was excellent, served at the table with a great choice of food.

We enjoyed relaxing in the cosy lounge with a drink (the house wine is very good) and dozing in front of the huge log fire.

Dinner was great, again plenty to choose from and delicious. Much of the food is home-grown in the well tended gardens.

The hot water bottles in bed were a welcome touch.

A great place to stay and learn about the area.

Wi Fi can be a bit patchy, but we were able to get enough of a signal to check e-mails.

Our Guide and driver assured us their rooms were good too.

I was at Hacienda Cusin for a week over New Year's with my family and had a great experience. The estate is absolutely beautiful and is located at the base of hills and distant volcanos (they are safe, don't worry). I spent two days just going on hikes and bike rides around the area to witness the scenery. The food was excellent and very fresh/healthy. For those like me who cannot be offline for more than a day, there is wi-fi access in the main areas and a satellite television. I would recommend Hacienda Cusin to anyone who wishes to experience Ecuador.

My family (10 & 15yr olds) and I stayed here for 4 nights before our Galapagos cruise and everything was perfect! It started with a 10p pickup at the Quito airport by their driver Angel. He was very professional and we used him a couple of times during our stay to local towns. We arrived at Cusin after midnight and when we got to our room there were 4 plates of food and drink waiting for us along with hot water bottles in the beds. It was a nice touch. The staff is very professional and most accomodating. Veronica, at the front desk, was helpful in telling us about local activities. She also arranged for a horse back riding trip through the stables at Cusin. The meals were great. During our first dinner the owner, Nik, came over to our table to introduce himself and tell us about the history of the property. We ran into Nik, his wife and stepson several times during our trip and had many pleasant conversations. He really has a passion for the property and making sure his guests have a memorable experience. The gardens on the property are amazing. There are dozens of species of plants, some of which only grow near the equator, and there is always something in bloom. If you're looking for a memorable stay and to experience what a real hacienda in Ecuador is like, then this is your place.

My husband and I, plus our 20-something daughters, spent 6 days at Hacienda Cusin on our first trip to Ecuador over the Christmas holidays. The place was fabulous and exactly what we were looking for -- a restful haven with enough activities, both at the Hacienda or a short drive away, to keep us active and entertained, as needed. The Hacienda combines the comfort and charm of an English country house with the warmth and hospitality of Latin America. Nick, the owner, was extremely kind and helpful and the staff could not have been more accommodating. The food was very good (we had nearly every meal there). Our family has done a lot of traveling, stayed at a lot of high-end hotels/inns and this ranks up there among the very best. I would strongly recommend it and I won't be surprised if we return!

Many thanks for such an appreciative review. Ot seems that the longer a guest stays, the more a guest likes and understands the complexity of Cusin. Regresa pronto!

This was our second time to come to Hacienda Cusin within one year. The first, late last winter, was so totally enchanting that we decided to return to this amazingly beautiful part of Ecuador once again for the holidays. We enjoyed every moment of the special ambiance that this place embodies. Christmas and New Year's eve were in every way a continuation of the magic, grace and charms of this unique place.
We love the eclectic mix of elegance and rustic aspects to the decor with antiques, interesting furnishings and art in both the private and public rooms with fireplaces aglow in the evening. Our walks into the surrounding hills have been filled with discoveries and a photographer's dream.
Last, but not least, the food has been terrific ( and we eat well all over the world). The holiday meals and all of our recent lunches were top rate... i.e., shrimp in a pernod sauce, superb soups, the best home made tree tomato salsa ( be warned! it's addictive) , a strawberry pie "to live for" and home made ice creams delicately flavored with Ecuadorian fruits. Top it all off on the veranda overlooking the gardens with a coffee from the new italian coffee maker and we're in heaven.
If you plan to come at the holidays, we suggest an early booking as things fill up. We met some really interesting folks, a couple of whom we plan to see upon our return to the US.

I had a very good time at Hacienda Cusin. I was there over New Year's and they did a very good job of entertainment and fireworks. Other than it being the holidays, the atmosphere was relaxed and peaceful. The employees are some of the friendliest I've met. The food ranged in a variety of tastes for each meal of the day with lovely restaurant atmospheres. My room was outstanding. The fireplace was key during cold nights. The entire resort has a very homey/cozey feeling to it. I actually got a chance to stay in both Hacienda Cusin and El Monasterio during my stay and I enjoyed both equally. My room in Hacienda Cusin was nice and spacious with a foyer and a sitting room with two full-sized beds and a full-length mirror (much appreciated). My room in El Monasterio was lovely and quite with a slanted ceiling and many windows. The secret passage way in El Monasterio was my favorite thing about the place.
