“Delightful and Relaxing, as Always”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 12, 2012

I've stayed at Hacienda Cusin many times since 1997 and I returned for another visit in November 2012. It's still as wonderful as ever! The gardens are lush and beautifully maintained, the food is fresh and delicious, and the staff are as friendly as they can be. The rooms are comfortable and varied. Most have fireplaces; you'll return from dinner to find a crackling fire in your room. None of the rooms have televisions or phones, which is perfect for a REAL vacation. (Internet and WiFi are available if you need them, though I prefer to remain unplugged as much as possible. Somehow the world keeps turning without my electronic intervention...)

I always enjoy horseback rides at Cusin. The stables are well run, with very skilled guides, well-trained trail horses, and lots of stunningly beautiful places to ride, whether for a few hours, all day, or overnight. I always take private Spanish lessons for two or three hours a day at Cusin; the tutors are wonderful. Try going to one of the Saturday markets in Otavalo with your tutor; you'll learn a lot! On Saturday mornings there is an animal market that starts early, a food market, and a clothing market. All are worthwhile and fun.

You'll want to stay at Cusin for at least three or four days, just to take in all the beauty of the place, the surrounding countryside, and the markets at Otavalo. Try one of the Garden cottages with the Umbrella rate; it's a great value and a very enjoyable experience. Hacienda Cusin is just wonderful! Highly recommended.

We loved this hacienda which is brimming with character and in a truly beautiful location surrounded by the high hills of the highlands. We were upgraded to a suite and arrived after a long flight delay to a beautiful little stone cottage with a roaring fire and hot water bottles in our bed!

The hacienda is fascinating to explore and there are lots of relaxing little places to hang out and chat or read a book. The food was also delicious. Overall a 5*, highly original experience.

This was a wonderful experience. Top notch staff, really top notch. Especially the restaurant staff. Beautiful grounds, charming rooms. The fires in the fireplaces in the evening added a special touch. We stayed for 5 nights and wanted more! One of our best experiences at the hotel (besides drinking hot chocolate by the fire) was riding horses. The guide was great, the horses were wonderful. Exploring the grounds was also fun, such lovely gardens!

Room Tip: All of the rooms are nice. Perhaps a room in the main house is the best with the most atmosphere.

We stayed just one night on our way from Cotacachi to Quito, but wish we could have stayed longer. This is not the place to stay if you want to walk out your door to nightlife and shopping - although it's just a short taxi ride to Otavalo. But if you want to relax in an elegant and historic environment, read in the comfortable library or lounge, walk around beautiful grounds and gardens, go horseback riding, hiking or stroll into the small village of San Pablo del Lago, this is it. We stayed in garden cottage 25 and couldn't have been happier with our choice. The adobe cottage was very romantic and private in a corner of the hacienda grounds accessed down a cobblestone path through the gardens. The cottage was spotlessly clean, spacious, with an incredibly comfortable king bed, working fireplace and spacious closet. Even better, it has it's own rooftop terrace with incredible views and a large private garden. Antique furnishings in the cottage and throughout the hacienda make it easy to imagine historical times. Staff were accommodating and helpful with any requests. We look forward to someday returning for a longer stay!

Certainly a destination in the Otavalo area, the hacienda/hotel is set around beautiful grounds in historic buildings amidst an incredible collection of antique art and handcrafts. Rooms have charm and comfort with fires in the evenings.. One should plan to stay more than one night to fully appreciate the .experience. There were groups and individuals there when we were that were trying to figure out how to extend their stays. Excellent restaurant and very friendly staff. We would highly recommend Cusin.

The best of the best. We had cool, rainy weather, but It made our stay even better. The fireplace in our room was lit while we were at dinner for a cozy welcome when we returned to our room. During the day, read a book by the living room fireplace, shop at the nearby Otovalo market, hike or ride horses. This place is really a gem--don't miss it. Also check out the small shop, full of surprises like old church vestments and other odds and ends. The wait staff also was great helping my husband to practice his Spanish. They will arrange a transfer from Quito for only $70 round trip.

Room Tip: Chose one with a fireplace. It adds a lot.
