“Shopaholics Paradise!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2013

If you like to shop and haggle prices the Otavalo Market is a lot of fun. Many of the vendors sell the usual tourist schlock but some of the crafts and artisan items are a good buy. I even appreciated some of the reproductions. You do need to sort through many stalls to find ones with quality items. I live in a farming community with many alpacas. An alpaca jacket in the States will cost at least a couple hundred dollars and a beautiful one I purchased in the market ran me only $30. I've included a photo of a musician who performs his original music. He will give you a brief lesson if you purchase one of his instruments. Watch for pick pockets. We didn't have any trouble but they're around.

“Full day activity, half day if you are fast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2013

So many stalls with a lot of different items for sale. Everything is super negotiable and it is best to do a big walk around an area before committing to a buy. There will always be something else you want. Look for fakes, it should be really obvious but if you find alpaca that you like, buy it. Only like 20 bucks for a sweater but you can get it cheaper if you are a good negotiator. i paid 16. Really quite a fun attraction for the little town, I emplore other travelers to be nice when negotiating with the indigenous. They can be a little bit jaded because of the sheer number of tourists but if you make an effort to speak spanish to them and smile they drop the facade really fast and are super kind. They still try to sell you anything but its nicer and more of a game. Bring small bills as change is hard for them to have. Fives are best because of bargaining power but twenties will be okay for sweaters and bigger items. Good thing to do with the other half of your day is the Condor Park up the hill. Ask any taxi driver.

“Nothing outstanding available here”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2013

Went on my own on a Saturday from Quito. The bus takes 2 hours and is only $2.00 or $2.20 each way. The rise through the Andes is wonderful.

The market was huge, with plenty of shops but nothing looked very good or authentic. I enjoyed people watching and interacting with shopkeepers trying to improve my Spanish and bought very little.

“Must see to believe”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2013

This market goes on forever! We spent a good part of the day going from stall to stall. There is everything from clothing and crafts to food and spices. We did all of our Ecuador shopping at this market and spent more than we expected. We were able to find gifts for everyone back at home. The town is nice and had lunch at one of the many cafes. We also tried some local food from the street vendors. This should be on everyone's list of things to see.

“Nice market with some good stuff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2013

You need to be prepared to bargain. You need to remember that this stuff is all available in Quito and other markets. It is fun, but not terrific. I would have found a better way of getting there if I had thought it through. Go on a Saturday for the best selection.

It is fun - if you like this sort of thing.
