We have just returned from 3 weeks in Ecuador. We had planned to stay at the Flying donkey for 4 nights, based on Trip Advisor reviews. However, we checked out at the crack of dawn after one night. We are young at heart, but I believe this hostal is for the young in age. Even though we had indicated we were retired educators, we were given a room right on the outside. The noise was unbearable--and the skinny curtain did not keep out the light from the street light right in our face. I killed 3 bugs before I sat down my luggage. To explain, this hostal faces two main streets. After the noise from fireworks subsided, we heard every car with a boom box. (I guess Otavalo will never do anything with noise pollution??) Anyway, at 3 am someone starts ringing the bell to be let "home." Finally they enter. At 3:45 the same thing. And at 4 am the person across the hall has TV blaring full bore. Was no one paying attention,?? This was a big ugh for me. Sorry--but I can't believe this gets such high ratings??
