We stayed at a place in the middle of town called Hotel Riviera Sucre. Their website is the following:
We found this hotel in the Ecuador 'Moon Handbook.'
We've traveled all over the world, and this is BY FAR one of our favorite hotels! There are open air terraces throughout the hotel and hammocks in the middle of the lobby area.
Accomodations were simple, but very clean and comfortable. Our room was really big and the bathroom was a very comfortable size. Most importantly, the shower pressure was AMAZING! We paid about $35 a night and even got a pretty full breakfast too (fruits, yogurt, eggs made to order). The staff was SO friendly and nice. They were very helpful giving us directions to the markets, places to eat, and overall, just made us feel extremely welcomed.
The owners' brother picked us up in Quito and drove us the two hours to the hotel. He happens to be a taxi driver, and his rate's way better than any of the others when we called around. We spoke very limited Spanish, but the driver did his best to explain some of the sights as we passed by. We requested him for our return to Quito a week later. He was also nice enough to make some stops enroute when we requested.
The owner is an Ecuadorian man and has a Dutch wife (who we made reservations through, using email, before our depature). We finally met him on our last day. We stayed for 5 days at this hotel. His English was pretty good, and he treated us to some interesting fruits he'd purchased at the market earlier that day.
Turns out that this hotel is the OLDEST one in all of Otavalo, it's been passed down to three generations. It's very beautiful and has a lot of character.
Anyway, I notice that there aren't any reviews on this place and think that it's such a shame that no one on tripadvisor has written anything about it to date. My husband and I have such fond memories of this place.
It's simple, but perfect in comfort level. The mattresses were solid and the blankets kept us very warm. The evenings might be a bit chilly since there's no heat and that's just the way evening weather is like in Otavlo, BUT If you're looking for budget accomodations, this is a great place! I loved our stay there!
