“Excellent choice but avoid ground floor”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 24, 2012

Hostal Riviera-Sucre
The public areas are spacious and well supplied with furniture and plants. I enjoyed them a lot.  The staff are unfailingly courteous and attentive.  Rooms 1 to7 look out onto a street.  Rooms 1 to 4 I would prefer as they look out onto a side street  which is interesting and a little quieter.  Traffic noise I did not find disturbing. Rooms 2 and 5 have a little balcony and room 4 quite a large one.  Rooms are large enough and adequately  furnished.  Rooms 8 and9 look out onto a dismal roof and bare wall but would not have traffic noise to speak of.  Rooms 11 to 16 on the ground floor are definitely to be avoided.  They are approached along a tiled surface which is quite slippery when wet. I have seen 11and 12 and they have little light, are not in good condition, and have makeshift, electrically unsafe showers. I would expect 13 to 16 to be the same.
I was less than pleased to be promised a room by noon and be kept waiting till 2.45pm, apparently so the room could be used to store the luggage of a tour group leaving that day. I was at this hotel twice, having rooms 3 and 1.  3 I preferred but 1 was more than acceptable.

Room Tip: Avoid ground floor. Details se main opinion

This hotel is bright colourful and comfortable. It is a wonderful old Colonial building with a nice cool courtyard surrounded by hammocks, a pretty breakfast garden, good queen size beds and is clean and well kept. The owner is very hospitable and friendly and has taken care to decorate and upgrade the hotel. They have a kitchen for the use of guests and a TV room with open fire. Most of the rooms have private bathrooms. It is central to everything but the rooms at the back are better for a good nights sleep (due to traffic noise) and open out onto the garden. Breakfast is extra and good. This hotel is great value for money.

Room Tip: Choose a garden room as the doors open out onto the garden.

This hotel has been in the same family for generations, the care and love for this hotel is obvious. The rooms have rustic charm and the building itself has colonial character. The orchids in the gardens of the hotel are beautiful and sitting at the tables in the garden for breakfast is fabulous. The staff is extremely friendly and accommodating and the atmosphere is very safe. There are computers with fast internet connection and a sitting room with movies to enjoy after a long day of adventure. On top of all the charm and comfort of this hotel is the price. It is so well priced and a value to say the least. Will be returning to Riviera Sucre the next time I travel to Otavalo.

Room Tip: Otavalo is not a very loud and bustling city, but rooms facing the street can be a little louder, es...

One of the oldest hotels in Otavalo, Hotel Riviera Sucre is a true bargain for savvy travelers looking for clean accommodations, hot showers and a tranquil environment, with a great location. Our room (#14) was quite large, with a very large bathroom. For $26 a night, it is hard to beat. Add another 6 bucks and breakfast is included, although we opted for the no breakfast rate. We had just coffee the first 2 mornings, and by Ecuador coffee standards, it was pretty good. The hotel is located within walking distance of both the animal market and craft/artisan market. The owners do not speak much English, but are nevertheless accomodating. They hooked us up with a wonderful taxi driver who picked us up in Quito and took us to the hotel for $55. We ended up hiring him for 8 hours the next day for sightseeing around Otavalo. He charges $10 hourly. Give Hotel Riviera Sucre a try!

Room Tip: Ask for a ground floor room in the rear for best hot water.

To me, if not the best one of the best low budget travel hotel in Otavalo. Safe, close to everything, warm and still keeps these mochilero ambiance of the 90's

Room Tip: The one locates at the street side, maybe a bit noise but you will be back at the 50's

5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2011

I have held back reviewing places in South America until I have travelled for several months (inculding 6 weeks in Ecuador) in order to, hopefully, give a fair review, in the context of the city, culture, price etc.

We had the place almost to ourselves for several days and so was excellent.

Price: Approx. US $25 per night for a matromonial room with private bathroom

Bedrooms: Large, timber floors, light, windo with shutters, cable tv, decent beds. Given the age and build type of the buiding, acoustucally the places isn't great, you will hear people walking and talking etc.

Bathroom: Fairly new facilities, clean, towels, soap and shampoo daily.

Hostel Services: Internal open courtyard design, aesthetically very nice, decent breakfast

Room service: Room service was daily and good.

Hostel Staff Service: Staff didn't speak english, but were very helpful and courtious. Always answered the door promptly at any time.

Hostel Patrons: Didn't have any. If you had loud patrons, I can imagine you wouldnt get much sleep, but for us it was great.

Location: Central location, very good for the money. Walking distance to everything. Personally the market is vastly over-rated, with mostly the same stuff you can buy in Quito and all the stalls sells very similar products. Don't go on a Saturday, its more expensive and, lie mentioned, there is simply more of the same. Go visit some of the natural sights in the area however - they are magnificent.

Conclusion: Good hostel, excellent value for money. Avoid going during the weekend to avoid the influx of people.

Room Tip: Ask for room near the garden at the back, away from street.

This hotel is extremely well placed about 5 blocks (10 minutes) from the market square and only 2 blocks from the main square. The layout is around an internal courtyard which is very calm. But in addition there is a large lounge area, a garden, and a breakfast room with two computers for use (charged) but free wifi in the rooms (though the speed gets extremely slow if there are many guests logged on). At $15 a night for a single it is exceptional value.
The rooms are a decent size and quite well cared for with a comfortable bed and more than sufficient blankets, though the rooms themselves are unheated. The bathrooms have huge showers and (contrary to the opinion expressed in Lonely Planet) there was never any lack of copious scalding hot water.
Only breakfast is served in the hotel and it is above average for the price. If you want variety, there are plenty of other restaurants nearby, and the one around the corner which opens for dinner is Afro-Ecuadorian and serves excellent fish.
The staff were unfailingly polite and really helpful in organising taxis and dealing with a power cut which affected the entire town.

Room Tip: Get room facing courtyard to avoid street noise
