“Good enough.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 23, 2014

Located at the very centre Otavalo, even though it's a very small city and you won't need anything but a walk to reach your location inside of the city. Basic, but good enough. Amenities given and clean. Food was very nice.

I worked in Ecuador years ago and have been back often to visit.

We used to stay at resorts that catered to locals at bargain prices. But with Ecuador's conversion to the US dollar, they have raised their prices to first-world levels geared to foreign tourists, defeating the purpose for us of vacationing in the third world.

My cousin had stayed at El Indio on business and recommended it to us. I must say we were pleased with the clean, functional accommodations.

In the US, we pay a flat rate for a room. So when we travel with kids overseas, it's a pain when we get dinged per person for a hotel room.

El Indio allowed us to stay in a comfortable, 2-room triple with 2 adults and 2 kids for the flat rate of under $100, good free wifi, cable tv, and private bath. (Unfortunately, $100 is almost a bargain rate in Ecuador nowadays). The included breakfast was very good. There is also a small, nice-looking spa in the hotel that we did not use.

The hotel's location is great, smack in the middle of Otavalo, halfway between the main square and the main market. The staff was quite friendly staff, calling us out to come look when a procession/parade came by.

Unfortunately, reserving our room was a bit of an ordeal, as they wanted funds deposited in their bank account in advance. This meant having to go out of our way to go to a bank. I would have gladly paid an extra fee for the convenience of getting to use a credit card. I believe they do take credit cards, but they would not for the original in-country deposit.

This review is more about the restaurant, the Waterfall, which is not listed in TripAdvisor. I did not stay at the hotel, but was surprised at the contrast of modern glass front, and traditional rooms with courtyard inside. Clearly popular with tours as I fought my way up the stairs.
I was the first in for lunch service and as initial service was slow, I debated leaving, but glad I stayed. I had the selection of local foods and it was fantastic. The plantains were just the sweetness I like, the beef the most tender I had in Ecuador, and all was just right to my palate. Sadly, there was so much I could not finish it. They don't seem to switch out linens between meals as there were some food stains on the table cloth, and the decor is so so, but that meal made up for everything. The other pleasant surprise was that the lunch prices are lower than the posted menu price, so I felt though a little pricey for Otavalo, it was a great meal.

A bit more than we are used to spending in Ecuador so far, but well worth the money if you consider the location, the quality of the room and the helpful staff. Clean, comfortable and quiet are three words that describe this hotel. The restaurant has ok food for supper but the included breakfast was very good and plentiful. They even provided us with a gated garage for our Jeep as we are driving through the Americas… Hope this review was helpful!!!

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back of the hotel if you want quiet!

We find a nice room for 4 people to stay the night, without reservation needed, also there's a place to play pool and it's in the Main Street so you can't get lost, there's free wifi, the room has a nice decoration with the towels and some snacks and drinks, tv cable and a small lobby to chat with friends

We fancied chicken as many places in town do Chicken and decided to stop here after visiting the market.

The place is basic but for 2 people, we paid 13.50USD for two big plates of chicken with rice/salad/potatoes etc and a large bottle of (warm) coke. We didnt think this was too bad and the food was pretty good.

We went with other friends and it was a good place to sleep, good service, clean rooms and prices are affordable, too bad we stayed only 1 night so we didnt have enough time to spend around the hotel.
